The modernisation of the economies of the former Soviet Union (FSU) will require substantial leve... more The modernisation of the economies of the former Soviet Union (FSU) will require substantial levels of foreign direct investment (FDI). The aim of this study is to examine factors which may be instrumental in determining this level of the FDI. It achieves this by establishing quantitative relationships between levels of FDI per capita to the year 2004 and three sets of indicators relating, respectively, to governance, economic freedom, and corruption perception. The paper demonstrates that the level of FDI in FSU states has been determined to a significant extent by the degree of reform from a planned economy towards a market economy.

Leading positions are taken by Germany, Spain and USA. The rates of growth of this branch of power engineering exceed 39% annually. It seems that the wind power is esteemed in these countries as the most perspective branch of electric power industry. The great success achieved by Germany and Spain in last years in developing wind power industry served as an example for all countries that have wind energy potentials. Information describing growth of powers, single wind power turbines, dynamics of increments of power of WPT on separate countries are submitted. During the last 10 years, the cost of WPT construction decreased more than twice, and it seems that specific investment costs reached a stable point for about 10 years. Furthermore, it can be concluded from wind farm investment costs that the cost of a WPT is about 1.3 times the cost of wind turbine. The information on the sizes of large WPT are adduced. q

The continuous increase in the level of greenhouse gas emissions and the climb in fuel prices are... more The continuous increase in the level of greenhouse gas emissions and the climb in fuel prices are the main driving forces behind efforts to more effectively utilise various sources of renewable energy. In many parts of the world, direct solar radiation is considered to be one of the most prospective sources of energy. However, the large-scale utilisation of this form of energy is possible only if the effective technology for its storage can be developed with acceptable capital and running costs. One of prospective techniques of storing solar energy is the application of phase change materials (PCMs). Unfortunately, prior to the large-scale practical application of this technology, it is necessary to resolve numerous problems at the research and development stage. This paper looks at the current state of research in this particular field, with the main focus being on the assessment of the thermal properties of various PCMs, methods of heat transfer enhancement and design configurations of heat storage facilities to be used as a part of solar passive and active space heating systems, greenhouses and solar cooking. r

The present paper considers the state of investigations and developments in form-stable phase cha... more The present paper considers the state of investigations and developments in form-stable phase change materials for thermal energy storage. Paraffins, fatty acids and their blends, polyethylene glycol are widely used as latent heat storage component in developing form-stable materials while high-density polyethylene (HDPE), styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) triblock copolymer, Eudragit S, Eudragit E, poly (vynil chloride) (PVC), poly (vynil alcohol) (PVA) and polyurethane block copolymer serve as structure supporting component. A set of organic and metallo-organic materials with high transition heat in solid-solid state is considered as perspective for-stable materials to store thermal energy. Another perspective class of form-stable materials are the materials on the basis of such porous materials as expanded perlite and vermiculite impregnated with phase change heat storage materials. The technology of producing new form-stable ultrafine heat storage fibers is developed. It opens availability to produce the clothers with improved heat storage ability for extremely cold regions. The perspective fields of application of formstable materials are discussed. The further directions of investigations and developments are considered.

In 2003, the residential sector of Uzbekistan has consumed about 15.073 Mtoe (million ton of oil ... more In 2003, the residential sector of Uzbekistan has consumed about 15.073 Mtoe (million ton of oil equivalent) of energy or 27.3% of the total energy consumed in the country. This value is approximately twice as much as that of residential sector of Turkey and Romania. The climate of above countries is comparable to that of Uzbekistan. In this article we suggest to use the heating degree-day method for determining the natural gas consumption norms for residential heating. Taking the climatic differences into account, the norms of natural gas consumption in respect to each resident are submitted for each region of Uzbekistan. The realization of suggested proposals allows saving about 9.2 billion m 3 of natural gas annually. r
