The purpose of this study was to examine attitudes toward physical education (PE and PE class preferences of high school Turkish students in terms of scbool gender composition; 213 girls and 249 boys from coeducational public schools, and 196 girls and 210 boys from single-sex vocational scbools participated in tbe study. Tbe Attitudes Toward Physical Education Scale was administered and the results of 2 X 2 (Gender X School Type) ANOVA indicated tbat students in coeducational scbools in general, and boys had more favorable attitudes. Additionally, chi-square analysis demonstrated significant differences in PE class preferences between students from single-sex and coeducational schools and between girls and boys.

Summay.-The purpose of this study was to examine mountaineers' (expert, less-experienced, nonparticipant) risk perception in 19 outdoor-adventure sports related to their sex and sports experience. A total of 299 experienced mountaineers (90 women, 209 men), 321 less-experienced mountaineers (1 10 women, 21 1 men) and 193 volunteers nonparticipants in sport (95 women and 98 men) took part. Data were collected with items on a Likert-type >-point scale. Test-retest over 15 days ranged from .64-86. A two-way variance analysis of sex x group showed that men's mean risk perception was lower than that of women for orienteering, mountain biking, rowing, surfing, sailing, nordic skiing, tour skiing, snowboarding, parachuting, and cliff jumping. Also, experienced mountaineers' mean risk perception was lower than that of those less experienced.

This paper draws on Bourdieu's notions of habitus, social field, and capital to provide a more complex examination of the place and meaning of physical education in Turkish young people's lives. Two secondary schools comprised of students from quite distinctive social, cultural, and geographical locations were involved in the study. Collected data from several focus group discussions, individual interviews, and class observations was analysed in relation to the themes of 'social class', 'gender', and 'students' positions within the social field of 'physical education'. The findings demonstrate how the national Turkish physical education (PE) curriculum became interpreted and deployed by each school in distinctive ways. Both schools promoted disciplinary and performance-based physical activities in the PE social field, even as they used different physical activities and had different reasons for privileging these types of activities. Physical education was used by the middle-upper-class school to reify and enhance the symbolic, cultural, and social capital of young people, who were regarded as future intellectual, business, and government leaders within Turkish society. In comparison, the school based in the poor suburb used physical activity as a means to create 'good' and 'productive' citizen-subjects. However, in using particular physical activities to create certain types of subjects with institutionally valued habitus (including physical 'abilities' and personal and social attributes), both schools ended up privileging only a few select young men and women whose physical capital was commensurate with the discursive requirements of the social field. From this perspective, we argue that both schools authorised certain individuals (mostly young men) who were able to take up ascendant positions because they could most easily convert their physical capital into social and cultural forms. These students were most able to determine acceptable forms of embodiment and could dictate patterns of use in the physical education classroom. In many instances, their dominance worked to prevent most of their peers from fully participating in PE.

1,163 middle school students (586 girls, 577 boys; Grades 6-8) were selected through a stratified random sampling method to examine their attitudes toward physical education (PE) by grade, student's sex, sports participation characteristics, and teacher's sex. They were administered the Attitude Toward Physical Education Scale for Children. Factorial analysis of variance indicated that Grade 8 students' mean attitude scores were less positive than those of Grade 6 students, but the attitudes of boys and of sports participants were more positive than of girls and nonsports participants. Findings were similar regardless of the teacher's sex.

ÖZET: Bu araştırmanın amacı, beden eğitimi öğretmenliği, antrenörlük ve rekreasyon programlarında öğrenim gören öğrencilerin eleştirel düşünme beceri düzeylerini saptamak ve eleştirel düşünme beceri puanlarını cinsiyet, program, sınıf düzeyi ve yükseköğretim giriş puan türü değişkenleri açısından karşılaştırmaktır. Araştırmaya, üç programda öğrenim gören 1394 öğrenci katılmıştır. Verilerin toplanmasında, Watson-Glaser Eleştirel Düşünme Gücü Ölçeği (W-GEDGÖ)'nin Türkçe formu kullanılmıştır. Verilerin analizinde betimsel istatistik ve varyans analizi tekniklerinden yararlanılmıştır. Araştırmadan elde edilen bulgular sonucunda, beden eğitimi öğretmenliği, antrenörlük ve rekreasyon programlarında öğrenim gören öğrencilerin eleştirel düşünme becerilerinin orta düzeyde olduğu saptanmıştır. Değişkenlere göre yapılan karşılaştırmalarda, eleştirel düşünme beceri puanlarında cinsiyet açısından anlamlı bir fark bulunmazken; program, sınıf düzeyi ve yükseköğretim giriş puan türü açısından anlamlı fark bulunduğu gözlenmiştir. Sonuç olarak, bazı değişkenler açısından grupların eleştirel düşünme beceri puanlarının farklılık gösterdiği, öğrencilerin eleştirel düşünme becerilerinin orta düzeyde olduğu ve geliştirilmesi gerektiği söylenebilir.

ÖZET: Beden eğitimi derslerinde kullanılan farklı dönütlerin başarı ve kalıcılığa etkisi araştırılmıştır. Araştırma, 2007Araştırma, -2008 80 öğrenci ile basketbolda turnike ve sıçrayarak şut konularında yapılmıştır. Kruskal-Wallis ve Mann Whitney-U Testleri kullanılmıştır. Bulgularda; bilişsel alanda, sözel ve kontrol, görsel ve kontrol grupları arasındaki farklar anlamlı bulunmazken diğer gruplar arasındaki farklar anlamlı bulunmuştur (p<0.05). Devinişsel alan sıçrayarak şut erişi puanlarında, görsel ve kontrol, sözel ve görsel gruplar arasındaki fark anlamlı bulunmazken diğer gruplar arasındaki farklar anlamlı bulunmuştur (p<0.05). Turnike erişi puanlarında görsel ve kontrol grubu arasındaki fark anlamlı bulunmazken diğer gruplar arasındaki farklar anlamlı bulunmuştur (p<0.05). Sıçrayarak şut kalıcılık puanlarında, sözel ve görsel gruplar arasındaki fark anlamlı bulunmazken diğer gruplar arasındaki farklar anlamlı bulunmuştur (p<0.05). Turnike kalıcılık puanlarında tüm gruplar arasındaki fark anlamlı bulunmuştur (p<0.05). Sonuçta, beden eğitimi derslerinde kullanılan farklı dönütlerin başarıya etkisinin olduğu, en fazla etkinin sözel+görsel dönüt grubunda olduğu görülmüştür.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Hacettepe Üniversitesi Spor Bilimleri Teknolojisi (SBT) Yüksekokulu!ndan mezun olup beden eğitimi öğretmenliği yapmakta olan öğretmenlerin öğretmen yetiştirme programının yeterliliğine ilişkin görüşlerini ortaya koymaktır. 1994-2006 yılları arasında Hacettepe Üniversitesi SBT'den mezun olup beden eğitimi öğretmenliği yapan 132 öğretmenden 66'sı araştırma kapsamına alınmıştır. Araştırma grubu içerisinden 16 beden eğitimi öğretmeni ile ayrıca odak grup görüşmesi yapılmıştır. Verilerin analizinde frekans ve yüzde hesaplamaları ile içerik analizi tekniği kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen bulgulara göre, öğretmenler genel kültür derslerinden Bilgisayar, İngilizce ile Atatürk İlke ve İnkılâpları Tarihi derslerinin, öğretmenlik meslek bilgisi derslerinden hemen hemen hepsinin ve alan bilgisi derslerinden çoğunun içeriğini mesleki yaşantıları açısından yeterli bulmuşlardır. Odak grup görüşmelerinde öğretmenler; genel kültür ders içeriklerinin KPSS'ye yönelik değiştirilmesi, kuramsal bilgi olarak tek başına yeterli olmadığı için öğretmenlik meslek bilgisi derslerinde uygulamaya yönelik bilgilerin de aktarılması, kuramsal alan bilgisi derslerinin uygulamaya nasıl aktarılacağı konusunda yetersiz oldukları için bu ders içeriklerinin gözden geçirilmesi, MEB öğretim programı ile üniversitedeki öğretim programının paralellik göstermesi durumunda beden eğitimi öğretmen yetiştirme programındaki derslerin öğretmenlik yaşantılarında kendilerine daha yararlı olacağını belirtmişlerdir.

The Trichotomous Achievement Goal Scale was developed by Agbuga and Xiang (2008) by including selected items from the scales of Duda and Nicholls (1992), Elliot (1999), and Elliot and Church (1997) and adapting them into Turkish. The scale consists of 18 items, and students rated each item on a 7-point Likert scale. To ascertain the validity and reliability of the Trichotomous Achievement Goal Scale, it was administered to 845 female and 861 male Turkish high school students attending three public schools in the 2008–2009 spring semester. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted, and Cronbach's alpha and Fornell and Larcker's (1981) criteria were tested on the items that measured the students' achievements, screening for the three distinct types of achievement goals proposed by the trichotomous framework. Based on the results of the study, the 16-item Trichotomous Achievement Goal Scale can be claimed as a valid a reliable scale.

Teaching and coaching are two different occupational roles, and teachers who also coach have stressful work environments common to all educational settings, but each occupational role has specific stress and burnout problems. The responsibilities of physical education (PE) teachers and coaches are distinguishable from one another. These different roles and role conflicts may create stress among PE teachers who also coach. The history of physical education shows that there are contextual factors that promote PE teacher-coach role conflict. The aim of this paper is to analyse these contextual factors via using a literature review analysis and to provide suggestions about teacher-coach role conflict for school-based physical education in USA.

The purpose of this study was to determine the opinions of physical education (PE) teachers about problems in practice and the suggestions for solution. Focus group interviews were conducted with 16 PE teachers in the study and data were evaluated with the content analysis method. The results showed that their most important problems faced in practice were; management staffs thought that PE class are unimportant, qualifications of investigators were not efficient to assess PE class, not only parents but also girls were not interested in PE courses, PE teachers had missing information on personal rights, students were not bring sportswear, tools and equipment were insufficient, course time was limited, course planning- implementation-evaluation were not adequate because of crowded classes, students were not participated in extracurricular activities due to preparing for examinations. Lower economic status (ES) is associated with a less adaptive experience of school and physical activity. However, empirical evidence supporting the detrimental association of lower ES on the affective and motivational experience in Physical Education (PE) remains scarce. Using a large sample (n = 10392) of adolescents from six countries (i.e., Greece, Spain, Italy, Portugal, England, Turkey), this cross-sectional study tested whether students’ ES was associated with the satisfaction of their basic psychological needs in PE, and in turn with motivational and affective outcomes in PE and their out-of-school physical activity intention. We further explored whether gender moderated the abovementioned relationship.
