Planners do not have that much control. In retrospect, it was easy to conclude that in conditions of constant population growth and with an economy in fairly good shape, a linear model of urban development would be relatively easy to maintain: the origin of the idea of certainty and control. The population in the Western world is no longer growing though; on the contrary, many regions and cities are facing population decline. Added to that, the economy is proving quite uncertain as well. The two together impact on spatial development. This all means that we have to consider a fundamentally different perspective on the role of spatial planning and its position in urban and rural development. Instead of planning aiming to achieve controlled development, it might get more out of the various autonomous processes affecting urban and the rural areas. In addition to planners being experts or mediators, we might appreciate planners becoming managers of change, transition managers, adaptive responders and social entrepreneurs, supporting and guiding the various parties within urban and rural areas to find the positions which suit them best. This book acknowledges these new identities and positions, with the planner acting as a manager of change. This book tries to present arguments in support of a discipline of spatial planning which adopts a different stance to the world, a more adaptive stance, and with a keen eye for self-organization processes: an eye for non-linear kinds of planning in a world of change.

Ved praksis forstår pragmatismen en samling af praksisser, i hvilke forskellige former for handlen, bl.a. også den fremstillende gøren og den formålsrettede handlen, anses for at vaere forbundne med såvel aktører, rutiner og habitualiseringer som ting og vaerktøjer i livsverdensmaessige og videnskabelige sammenhaenge. Pragmatismen har med sin version af en praksisteori altid vendt sig imod de negative konsekvenser af den platonisk-aristoteliske opfattelse af teori, praksis og poeisis, idet den nemlig resulterer i en ensidig udmaerkelse af det kontemplative forhold til verden og en ligeså ensidig nedvurdering af det produktive og aktive forhold mellem menneske og verden. Saerlig John Dewey har foretaget en nyvurdering af både praksis' og poeisis' status og har kritiseret de negative konsekvenser af den vedvarende indflydelse af den platoniske og aristoteliske underordning af praksis og poeisis under teoriens førerstilling. I den indflydelsesrige aristoteliske udgave skelnes som bekendt mellem praksis (menneskelig handlen som saedelig praksis), teori (erkendelsen af de sidste begrundelser og årsager) og poeisis (den fremstillende gøren). Teori bliver, ifølge Aristoteles, udøvet for sin egen skyld, og det menneske, der udøver teori, opfylder bedst det i mennesket anlagte potentiale. Det gode liv som praksis er ifølge Aristoteles selvfølgelig ikke udelukkende muligt som teoretisk livsførelse, men alligevel er den teoretiske holdning den, der for Aristoteles udmaerker det gode liv som praksis i saerlig grad. Den fremstillende poietiske handlen står hos Aristoteles i den nedre ende af hierarkiet af livsførelser. Nu er det imidlertid ikke først pragmatismen, der har kritiseret og aendret det aristoteliske hierarki af menneskelig selvforståelse og dets forhold til verden. Rehabiliteringen af praksis og nyfortolkninger af praksisbegrebet har talrige rødder i den filosofiske tradition og raekker fra opvurderingen af livspraktisk klogskab hos Montaigne, over Marx' og Neo-Marxismens politisk praksisbegreb til anerkendelsen af livsverdenen som den uomgaengelige baggrund for vores viden i Husserls faenomenologi eller Heideggers eksistensfilosofi. The question posed by this spectre is: What is the usefulness of studying Arts and Humanities? This has manifested itself in a decreasing acknowledgment, which again has resulted in considerable downsizing and diverse forms of crisis man¬agement. In this political realm this volume provides an alternative story about Arts and Humanities through the more constructive phrasing of the question: Which needs in society do the Arts and Humanities respond to and accommodate? The volume is divided into two sections. The first section addresses the "Historical positions of Arts and Humanities in society: Criticism, control and collaboration". Here, the overall question is discussed at a general level. The aim of the second section "How to reinvent the Arts and Humanities: Defining disciplines and cross disciplinary developments" is to discuss a possible ...
