Sarika Talve-Goodman
I received a Ph.D. in Literature at The University of California, San Diego in 2016. My dissertation, titled "Cultural Scars: Trauma and Disability in 20th Century Transnational Jewish Cultural Production," examines the cross-implication of bodily trauma and historical trauma. Spanning medical and literary archives from the modernist period to today, as well as multiple geographical and linguistic locations, I analyze overlapping metaphors of disability and trauma in canonical Jewish literatures. I argue that these metaphors constitute a critical discourse on modernity and the body, from the figure of the mentshele (little person) in the beginning of modern Yiddish literature in the mid-19th century to queer and female grotesque bodies in contemporary American and Israeli novels. My research bridges transnational modernism studies, Jewish cultural studies, trauma and disability studies, and critical theories of race, gender, and sexuality.
As a postdoctoral fellow, I am part of The European Research Council Project, "Apartheid--The Global Itinerary: South African Cultural Formations in Transnational Circulation" under the supervision of Dr. Louise Bethlehem. My current research examines how the apartheid regime shapes global modernism and transnational activism in the US during the Cold War and Civil Rights era, as well as traces these discourses around liberalism and race into the present.
