Abstract
This research deals with word formation in Honduran Spanish (EH). Its aim is to present the ways in which words are formed in EH and to discover words which are not documented in the dictionaries dealing with EH. Word formation in EH takes place in a number of ways: words are loaned from other languages (native substratum languages and English), and EH makes use of the tools available in Spanish in order to form new words, both by taking advantage of well-known suffices in Spanish and by creating new periphrastic verbs.
The research is based on a corpus which was created especially and which includes press items from Central Honduras as well as email correspondence between native speakers of EH from the same area. In order to review the lexicon of EH and in order to compare and place the results stemming from the corpus in the context of existing research, we review the dictionaries which relate to EH, namely the dictionary of the Real Academia Española, Daniel Lévêque´s dictionary of Central American Spanish and Alberto Membreño´s specific dictionary of EH.
The research reaches descriptive conclusions regarding the lexicon of EH and details a list of almost 60 words in EH, from the corpus, which are not documented in the dictionaries reviewed.
