Intergroup encounters can often become difficult conversations in which power relations and disag... more Intergroup encounters can often become difficult conversations in which power relations and disagreements are perpetuated and re-enacted through the interaction and communication between the participating groups. Thus, especially in asymmetric settings, moral inclusion and moral responsibility toward members of other groups are crucial to dialogue, conflict resolution, and reconciliation. Yet it is exactly the circumstances of asymmetry-involving threat and dehumanization-that pose barriers to the elicitation and sustaining of moral concern. Drawing on and integrating two separate research traditions-the psychology of intergroup conflict, dialogue and peace building, and communication research on "mediated suffering"-this article discusses perceptions, representations, and emotions that underlie recognition of and empathy toward the suffering of others with the aim of increasing our understanding of when and how we can be brought-through mediated and unmediated dialogues and encounters-to care about the suffering of others. This article relates to a crucial aspect of difficult intergroup conversations: the question of when and how can these encounters with the other evoke moral concern. Our elaboration on this question draws on and integrates two separate research traditions-the psychology of intergroup conflict, dialogue and peace building, and research from communications and media studies on "mediated suffering." However, scarce research attention is devoted to systematic empirical examination of the emotional responses evoked in viewers by personalized media coverage of terrorists. This study examines Jewish-Israeli responses to a televised interview with a female Palestinian terrorist, caught by Israeli security services on her way to perform a suicide bombing in Israel. The study uses quantitative methods to determine the effect of the interview on Jewish-Israeli viewers, and to show that political identification in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict – as hawks or as doves – affects viewers' perceptions of the interviewed terrorist and viewers' emotional responses to her.

Cross-party violence-violence between opposing partisans-is a growing concern worldwide. Understa... more Cross-party violence-violence between opposing partisans-is a growing concern worldwide. Understanding the predictors of the legitimization of violence against political opponents is thus becoming a vital goal. In this work, we propose two potential explanatory frameworks: affective polarization and low non-violent group efficacy. The first reflects an affective motivation to harm the out-party, while the latter reflects an instrumental motivation to deploy violence. Furthermore, while the former is frequently suggested in scholarly work as a cause for such violence, it has so far been backed only by limited empirical support. On the other hand, the latter is hardly examined in the context of interactions between opposing partisans. We tested the relationship of the two explanatory frameworks with the legitimization of cross-party violence using public opinion surveys in two real-world contexts: in 2020, in Israel (N = 500) and in the US (N = 631). Results from a regression analysis provide support for the instrumental explanation but not for the affective one. We discuss the theoretical implications of our findings for the research of affective polarization, and potential practical implications for attempts to reduce cross-party violence.
The core of the barriers research agenda is to understand what stands in the way of parties reach... more The core of the barriers research agenda is to understand what stands in the way of parties reaching agreement or successfully resolving a conflict, and to identify strategies for overcoming these barriers. Over the last three decades, this research agenda has expanded to incorporate new disciplinary perspectives and a broader range of methodological approaches. Here we draw together the important developments in the barriers research agenda represented in the contributions to this special issue of Dynamics of Asymmetric Conflict. We discuss key themes related to recent work on relational barriers: application to real-world cases and the particulars of context, attention to power relations and power asymmetries, and the link between emotions and barriers to conflict resolution. Finally, we identify important directions for future research on barriers to the resolution of asymmetric conflict suggested by the contributions to this volume.

This approach assesses the extent to which contact interventions, aimed at improving relations between sides in dispute, actually promote among their participants relationships, behaviors, and interactions that fulfill standards of social justice, equality, and fairness. Creating equality in communication models and reinforces values of mutual respect and tolerance. Thus, establishing symmetrical communication can be especially important for many interventions conducted to resolve conflicts marked by unequal distribution of power. One such asymmetrical conflict is the one between the Jewish majority and the Arab minority in Israel. This article describes a study that applies our processevaluation approach to assess equality and social justice in planned contact interventions between Israeli Jews and Arabs by measuring the degree to which members of the two groups contributed equally to the communication between them. Finally, the article presents guidelines, derived from this and other similar studies, for establishing communication equality in other planned contact interventions. Basierend auf Daten aus 10 Tiefeninterviews, zeigen unsere Ergebnisse, dass Social-Media-Plattformen es Journalisten ermöglichen, einen autonomen Raum zu schaffen, um Augenzeugenberichte zugänglich zu machen und aus den Bedingungen des asymmetrischen Konflikts resultierende Einschränkungen der Berichterstattung zu vermeiden. Die Befragten sehen Social-Media-Plattformen als ein potentielles Tor zur Verbreitung alternativer Narrative sowohl in lokalen als auch in internationalen Nachrichtenmedien. Zugleich deuten unsere Ergebnisse jedoch darauf hin, dass die israelischen Behörden den Medien nach wie vor Einschränkungen der Arbeitsbedingungen von Journalisten und ihrer Berichterstattung auferlegen, die jenen entsprechen, die bereits vor Aufkommen der sozialen Medien bestanden hatten.
Ethnopolitical conflicts are defined as ongoing states of hostility and opposition between two or... more Ethnopolitical conflicts are defined as ongoing states of hostility and opposition between two or more ethnic and/or national groups of people. This article discusses phenomena commonly observed by social and political scientists of misperceptions, biased construals, and miscommunication that occur between the two opposing sides in deeply set ethnopolitical conflicts. The first part of this article describes major characteristics of ethnopolitical conflict that are closely related to psychological and communicative processes that are highly typical of such conflicts. The second part of this article describes misperceptions and biased construals in conflict such as ‘the mirror-image phenomenon’, and the ‘hostile media effect’. The third part of the article discusses miscommunications in conflict that include cycles of perpetual argument, and other processes related to communication codes in ethnopolitical conflict. Finally we conclude by briefly outlining the role of communication in peace building and conflict resolution.
The goal of this study is to empirically determine the extent to which controlled intergroup comm... more The goal of this study is to empirically determine the extent to which controlled intergroup communicative contact-such as structured intergroup meetings between Israeli-Jews and Palestinians-increases the propensity for peaceful conflict resolution. The proposed model in this study was tested on public opinion data from a representative sample of Israeli-Jews using structural equation modeling. The model was successful in explaining variations in Jewish-Israeli out-group trust (R 2 = .24, R = .49) and in predicting agreement with integrative compromise solutions (R 2 = .55, R = .74). In line with the hypotheses, we found that Jewish-Israeli participation in structured intergroup meetings with Palestinians is associated with increased agreement with integrative compromise solutions and that this association is significantly and highly mediated by out-group trust. However, contrary to our expectations, Jewish-Israeli guilt toward Palestinians was not significantly associated with participation in intergroup meetings or with agreement with integrative compromise solutions. The findings are discussed in light of recent theorizing and research on deliberative communication and intergroup contact.

Specifically, it examines the extent to which Jewish Israeli facilitators of dialogue with members of the Palestinian outgroup experience their repeated exposure to Palestinians and to Palestinian narratives as impacting their views, feelings, and actions, as well as their attitudes toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Thematic content analysis of 20 in-depth interviews with Jewish facilitators of reconciliation-aimed dialogue groups reveals that the repeated exposure of Jewish Israelis to the Palestinian narrative is associated with increased awareness of and moral concern for the suffering and distress of Palestinians. The findings contribute to our understanding of how intergroup dialogues that expose participants to the narratives of the outgroup can help them cope with and even mitigate the destructive role that ethnocentric ingroup narratives may play in conditions of conflict.

This study explores the effects of continuous long-term exposure to the contesting narrative of t... more This study explores the effects of continuous long-term exposure to the contesting narrative of the outgroup in the context of the protracted conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. Specifically, it examines the extent to which Jewish Israeli facilitators of dialogue with members of the Palestinian outgroup experience their repeated exposure to Palestinians and to Palestinian narratives as impacting their views, feelings, and actions, as well as their attitudes toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Thematic content analysis of 20 in-depth interviews with Jewish facilitators of reconciliation-aimed dialogue groups reveals that the repeated exposure of Jewish Israelis to the Palestinian narrative is associated with increased awareness of and moral concern for the suffering and distress of Palestinians. The findings contribute to our understanding of how intergroup dialogues that expose participants to the narratives of the outgroup can help them cope with and even mitigate the destructive role that ethnocentric ingroup narratives may play in conditions of conflict.
