The seventeenth century, anonymously published, Spanish novel, "The Life of Estebanillo Gonzales"... more The seventeenth century, anonymously published, Spanish novel, "The Life of Estebanillo Gonzales", is a text of immense literary value and a fascinating historical document. Using an approach that combines literary criticism and historical analysis, this paper examines the novel in relation to the concept of the Spanish Baroque. While using an alternative reading of the novel that sees in the topos of the Buffoon a mythic trope that functions as a continuous ironic double entendre throughout the text, this paper promotes the thesis that "The Life of Estevanillo Gonzales", through its use of grotesque imagery, inverted values, mockery and satire offers a glimpse into the deep crisis of seventeenth century Spain. As such the novel, should be read as a charged political product of its time, a work that reflects a break from tradition and the deterioration of the established order in the Spanish baroque, which in turn relates to larger historical shifts in contemporary Europe.

הרומן הפיקרסקי הספרדי מן המאה השבע-עשרה "La vida y hechos de Estebanillo González", הינו טקסט בעל... more הרומן הפיקרסקי הספרדי מן המאה השבע-עשרה "La vida y hechos de Estebanillo González", הינו טקסט בעל ערך ספרותי נדיר ומסמך היסטורי מרתק. מאמר זה בוחן את הרומן הנידון באמצעות גישה אשר משלבת בין ביקורת ספרות לניתוח היסטורי ואשר במרכזה עומדת קריאה אלטרנטיבית של הטקסט אשר רואה בדמותו של ליצן החצר דימוי מיתי אשר מייצר מימד של כפל משמעות לכל אורכו של הטקסט. באמצעות קריאה זאת, מאמר זה מקדם תזה אשר לפיה רומן זה, באמצעות שימוש בדימוים גרוטסקיים, ערכים מהופכים, בוז, סאטירה ואירוניה, מאפשר מבט ביקורתי על תוך נבכיו של המשבר החמור אשר אפיין את העולם הספרדי קונטיננטלי של המאה ה-17. עקב כך מאמר זה מציע שסיפורו של אסטבניו גונזאלס צריך להיקרא כתוצר פוליטי טעון של תקופתו, אשר משקף את השבירה מן המסורת ואת הידרדרות הסדר הקיים בתקופתו.

Instead, Bennet proposes, Israel should control the entire West Bank, creating clusters of 'upgraded' Palestinian Autonomy that will be "short of a state," not being allowed to "control its own borders and… to have a military." Although within Israel this publication went relatively unnoticed, it was a momentous action, signaling the beginning of the public unmasking of the one-sided Israeli solution; making visible a system of apartheid that evolved over a long time, but did so in increments and in a way that allows those in power to deny its existence.
