Real-time three-dimensional acquisition of real-world scenes has many important applications in c... more Real-time three-dimensional acquisition of real-world scenes has many important applications in computer graphics, computer vision and human-computer interaction. Inexpensive depth sensors such as the Microsoft Kinect allow to leverage the development of such applications. However, this technology is still relatively recent, and no detailed studies on its scalability to dense and view-independent acquisition have been reported. This paper addresses the question of what can be done with a larger number of Kinects used simultaneously. We describe an interference-reducing physical setup, a calibration procedure and an extension to the KinectFusion algorithm, which allows to produce high quality volumetric reconstructions from multiple Kinects whilst overcoming systematic errors in the depth measurements. We also report on enhancing image based visual hull rendering by depth measurements, and compare the results to KinectFusion. Our system provides practical insight into achievable spatial and radial range and into bandwidth requirements for depth data acquisition. Finally, we present a number of practical applications of our system.

Exploring such location-based information in AR requires physical movement to different viewpoints, which may be tiring and even infeasible when viewpoints are out of reach. In this paper, we present object-centric exploration techniques for handheld AR that allow users to access information freely using a virtual copy metaphor. We focus on the design of techniques that allow the exploration of large real world objects. We evaluated our interfaces in a series of studies in controlled conditions and compared them to a 3D map interface, which is a more common method for accessing location-based information. Based on our findings, we put forward design recommendations that should be considered by future generations of location-based AR browsers, 3D tourist guides or situated urban planning.

There has been growing research interest in investigating techniques to combine real and virtual ... more There has been growing research interest in investigating techniques to combine real and virtual spaces. A variety of “reality” concepts such as Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality and their supporting technologies have emerged in the field of design to adopt the task of replacing or merging our physical world with the virtual world. The different realities can be tailored to enhance comprehension for specific design activities along a design life-cycle. This paper presents state-of-the-art applications of these “reality” concepts in design and related areas and proposes a classification of these realities to address suitability issues for the effective utilization of the concepts and technologies. Their potentials and implications in certain design activities are also discussed.

In this paper, we propose a novel approach for recognizing facial expressions based on using an A... more In this paper, we propose a novel approach for recognizing facial expressions based on using an Active Appearance Model facial feature tracking system with the quadratic deformation model representations of facial expressions. Thirty seven Facial Feature points are tracked based on the MPEG-4 Facial Animation Parameters layout. The proposed approach relies on the Euclidean distance measures between the tracked feature points and the reference deformed facial feature points of the six main expressions (smile, sad, fear, disgust, surprise, and anger). An evaluation of 30 model subjects, selected randomly from the Cohn-Kanade Database, was carried out. Results show that the main six facial expressions can successfully be recognized with an overall recognition accuracy of 89%. The proposed approach yields to promising recognition rates and can be used in real time applications.
