Grifolin is a natural biologically active substance isolated from the fresh fruiting bodies of the mushroom Albatrellus confluens. Here, for the first time, we describe a novel activity of grifolin, namely its ability to inhibit the growth of tumor cells by the induction of apoptosis. Grifolin strongly inhibited the growth of tumor cell lines: CNE1, HeLa, MCF7, SW480, K562, Raji and B95-8.

β-Glucosidases (EC 3.2. 1.21) cleave β-glucosidic linkages in disaccharide or glucose-substituted molecules and play important roles in fundamental biological processes. β-Glucosidases have been widely used in agricultural, biotechnological, industrial and medical applications.

METHODS Genomic Southern blot analysis of the mouse Rpe65 gene: A mouse Genoblot containing mouse genomic DNA digested with EcoRI, Hind III, BamH I, Pst I and Bgl II was purchased from Clontech (Palo Alto, CA). This blot was prehybridized with QuikHyb (Stratagene, La Jolla, CA) and hybridized with a random primed [17] bovine cDNA probe [6]. The blot was washed to a final stringency of 0.1 X SSC+ 0.1% SDS at 63 C.

Materials and methods Preparation Small pieces (< 1 cm2) of atrial myocardium from the anterior free wall of the right atrium were excised from the hearts of 56 patients undergoing corrective open heart surgery as part of the cannulation technique for cardiopulmonary bypass. Prior to surgery, informed consent was obtained. All patients were under 20 years old and suffered from congenital heart diseases including ventricular septal defects, 27; atrial septal defects, 21; Fallot's tetralogy, 8.

Software testing can only be formalized and quantified when a solid basis for test generation can be defined. Tests are commonly generated from the source code, control flow graphs, design representations, and specifications/requirements. Formal specifications represent a significant opportunity for testing because they precisely describe what functions the software is supposed to provide in a form that can be easily manipulated. This paper presents a new method for generating tests from formal specifications.

Abstract Green fluorescent protein (GFP) is an attractive reporter for bioprocess monitoring. Although expression of GFP in plants has been widely reported, research on the use of GFP in plant cell cultures for bioprocess applications has been limited. In this study, the suitability of GFP as a secretory reporter and a useful tool in plant cell bioprocess optimization was demonstrated.

Abstract Writing formal specifications can help developers understand users' requirements, and build a solid foundation for implementation. But like other activities in software development, it is error-prone, especially for large-scale systems. In practice, effective detection of specification errors still remains a challenge. In this paper, we put forward a rigorous, systematic method for the inspection of model-based formal specifications.

Abstract One population distributed in Yunnan of China was regarded as a new species based on mitochondrial cytochrome b sequences. However, the usefulness of mitochondrial sequence data in determining species boundaries is not universally agreed upon, the frequency data from multiple nuclear gene loci is necessary in determining species boundaries.

Abstract One of the primacy concerns in developing computer embedded safety-critical systems is how to develop quality software. Software must fulfill its functional requirements and must not contribute to the violation of safety properties of the entire system. To this end, capturing error free and satisfactory functional requirements is crucial before proceeding to the subsequent development phases.

Abstract Mineral dust comprises of a significant fraction of the globe's aerosol loading. Yet it remains the largest uncertainty in future climate predictions due to the complexity in its components and physico-chemical properties. Multi-analysis methods, including SEMEDX, FTIR, BET, TPD/mass, and Knudsen cell/mass, were used in the present study to 5 characterise Asian dust storm particles. The morphology, element fraction, source distribution, true uptake coefficient of SO2 and hygroscopic behaviour were studied.

Abstract: In this report I present a case study of modeling an ATM using SOFL (Structured Object-oriented Formal Language), a formal engineering method for software development. The purpose of the case study is to demonstrate how SOFL can be used in a top-down manner to achieve good quality object-oriented design. I also try to show how SOFL can be used in a three-step approach to obtaining a formal design specification from informal user requirements specification through semi-formal functional specification.

Abstract Modal analysis and seismic response analysis were carried out for the equatorial diagnostic port plug of international thermonuclear experimental reactor (ITER). The aim of the theoretical analysis is to verify structural strength and reliability of the device. The working condition includes one-dimensional seismic wave and two-dimensional seismic wave. Modal analysis of the device shows that primary vibration is inclined to occur in low-order modes.

Formal specification has been increasingly adopted for the development of software systems of the highest integrity. However, the readability of specifications for large-scale and complex systems can be so poor that even the developers may not easily understand whether their specifications define the “intended behaviors”. In this paper, we describe a software tool that supports the animation of specifications by simulating their functional scenarios using the Message Sequence Chart (MSC).

Abstract Background: Expression of kappa gene is under the control of distinct cis-regulatory elements, including the kappa intron enhancer (iEκ) and the kappa 3'enhancer (3'Eκ). The active enhancers and expression of immunoglobulin is generally considered to be restricted to B lymphocytes. However, accumulating evidence indicated that epithelial cancer cells, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cell lines, express immunoglobulins. The mechanisms underlying the expression of Igs in nonlymphoid cells remain unknown.

Specification-based (or functional) testing enables us to detect errors in the implementation of functions defined in specifications, but since specifications are often incomplete in practice for some reasons (eg, lack of ideas, no time to write), it is unlikely to be sufficient for testing all parts of corresponding programs.

Abstract Refinement of operations is well defined in terms of refinement rules and is considered as a reasonable discipline for software development. This paper, however, observes that refinement is not sufficient to serve this role for the entire software development process and then proposes evolution for substitution. We show that refinement is indeed a special case of evolution and evolution is transitive.

Abstract Endocarps of the genus Prunus (family Rosaceae) have been described from early Eocene clay deposits in the Wutu Coal Mine, Shandong Province, China. Endocarps are elliptical or ovoid in lateral view, with a long canal that approaches the apex of the endocarp and contains the ventral vascular bundle. Comparisons with related living and fossil species of Prunus indicate that these endocarps should be assigned to Prunus wutuensis sp. nov. The endocarps from Wutu represent the earliest record of Prunus in Asia.

Abstract Ensuring the consistency of formal specifications is one of the most desirable goals to achieve in software development with formal methods. In this paper we put forward a property-based approach to rigorous review of formal specifications for their consistency.
