Aktuelle Diskurse zelebrieren Zweisprachigkeit als Wirtschaftsgut und Schlüssel zum Erfolg auf de... more Aktuelle Diskurse zelebrieren Zweisprachigkeit als Wirtschaftsgut und Schlüssel zum Erfolg auf dem Arbeitsmarkt. Anhand der ethnographischen Untersuchung der wirtschaftlichen Nutzung der lokalen Zweisprachigkeit in der Tourismusindustrie der Stadt Murten an der deutsch-französischen Sprachgrenze in der Schweiz geht die Autorin diesen Diskursen empirisch auf den Grund. Aus einer kritischen soziolinguistischen Perspektive beleuchtet sie die Sprachensituation in touristischen Marketingdiskursen sowie die Bedeutung von Zweisprachigkeit im touristischen Arbeitsmarkt und in Stadtführungen. Dieser Band zeigt die variable (De-)Konstruktion geopolitischer Sprachgrenzen sowie sozialer Kategorien von SprecherInnen. Die Arbeit eröffnet neue Perspektiven auf die Dynamik der Politökonomie von Sprache(n) und der Legitimität ihrer SprecherInnen im Kontext der Neuen Wirtschaft.

This contribution treats “language immersion” as a linguistic ideology and explores narratives, p... more This contribution treats “language immersion” as a linguistic ideology and explores narratives, practices, and subjectivities pertinent to that notion in the context of language-motivated voluntourism. Voluntourism programs offer shortterm sojourns abroad, which combine voluntary work with holidays while promising “immersion” as an efficient alternative to classroom language learning. In the Mediterranean island state of Malta, whose population is mostly bilingual in English and Maltese, voluntourism has become an attractive product for the booming English language travel industry. Since there is a lack of critical sociolinguistic and second language acquisition research on the language learning trajectories of voluntourists, this piece examines the promise of immersion through the example of a hostel that figures as a workplace. Drawing on ethnographic data, it investigates how learning English through immersion while working abroad is imagined and promoted, whether or not it occurs, and what gains (linguistic or otherwise) it generates and for whom. The article argues that the voluntourism industry appropriates the discourse of immersion to responsibilize English learners for their linguistic self-skilling, thereby constituting them as neoliberal subjects that can easily be exploited as a cheap workforce.

Dans l'industrie du tourisme des destinations périphériques, on s'approprie souvent les langues/v... more Dans l'industrie du tourisme des destinations périphériques, on s'approprie souvent les langues/variétés locales comme une marque d'authenticité. Les langues (inter)nationales, quant à elles, servent d'instrument de communication avec les touristes. Cette appropriation économique des langues demande des compétences langagières spécifiques et une haute flexibilité linguistique de la part des employé.e.s du secteur du tourisme. La présente contribution traite de cette problématique dans la ville bilingue de Morat, située à la frontière linguistique franco-allemande en Suisse. Dans ce contexte, le rôle du "bilinguisme" en tant que critère de sélection pour l'accès au marché du travail dans le secteur touristique sera examiné dans une perspective sociolinguistique critique. L'enquête ethnographique d'un processus de recrutement montre que la définition du bilinguisme est régie par un ensemble d'idéologies langagières propres à l'économie politique locale des langues, c'est-à-dire la valorisation de certaines combinaisons de langues/variétés et de certaines conceptions de ce qu'est la compétence linguistique. Dans cet article, il s'agira de retracer comment la définition du bilinguisme est négociée tout au long d'un processus de recrutement et comment, de ce fait, les connaissances linguistiques des candidat.e.s peuvent être une variable pertinente, mais aussi d'une pertinence variable pour l'in-et l'exclusion de ce marché de travail spécifique.

En focalisant sur différentes offres de visites guidées bilingues, nous analysons le choix du bilinguisme comme un processus de commodification linguistique, en présentant les raisons de ce choix, les conceptions des langues et du bilinguisme impliquées dans la planification d'une telle offre ainsi que la mise en
oeuvre du bilinguisme dans les visites observées. Adoptant une perspective sociolinguistique critique, nous voulons montrer comment les choix linguistiques dans une telle offre touristique font partie d'un système de valorisation, parfois contradictoire, des langues et de leurs combinaisons et ont de ce fait des conséquences sur le vécu des personnes impliquées ainsi que sur la perception de la frontière linguistique.

The project examines the German-French language border in Switzerland through the analysis of tou... more The project examines the German-French language border in Switzerland through the analysis of touristic discourses and activities. By looking at the language border through the eyes of tourism, the project places Swiss multilingualism clearly in the context of globalisation and its related socio-economic changes. The research focuses on two regions situated on the language border in the cantons Valais and Fribourg: the areas of Sierre/Siders and Murten/Morat, where tourism plays a key economic role. By means of an ethnographic study, the project examines how the language border and/or bilingualism affect the touristic offer, e.g. promotional and informational material, the organisation of touristic institutions and the carrying out of touristic activities. A further aspect under consideration is the extent to which the language border is made visible in tourist areas (linguistic landscape). The overall goal of the research project is to demonstrate how language – in this case in the form of the language border and bilingualism – is used in a sector with economic relevance for Switzerland, and to identify the resulting consequences for the local language situation and for the speakers of the languages concerned. The project intends thus to close the academic void between traditional research in multilingualism and empirical tourism research focused on economic impact.

The term 'immersion' was coined in the mid-1960s in Quebec, Canada, when English-speaking parents... more The term 'immersion' was coined in the mid-1960s in Quebec, Canada, when English-speaking parents requested the schooling of their children in French. Since then, language immersion - which entails the exposure of language learners to social environments where the target language is spoken - has come to be viewed as the most efficient language learning method in schools where various forms of language immersion are being implemented and enforced, in the language teaching industry where immersion is often highlighted as a central feature of language learning programs, and among enterprises in the experience economy where activities based on 'immersion-experiences' are being designed and marketed.
By viewing 'immersion' as linguistic ideology, this symposium aims to critically engage with the discourses, practices and subjectivities that are animated by the concept, and to ask how these relate to social structures and processes of power, inequality and (neoliberal) governance. It explores how social actors in the various contexts where 'immersion' has been adapted, imagine, resignify and challenge the concept, and what the educational, social and political-economic consequences are for them.
Die Grenzen zwischen den Landessprachen gehören zum sprachlichen Selbstverständnis der Schweiz un... more Die Grenzen zwischen den Landessprachen gehören zum sprachlichen Selbstverständnis der Schweiz und sind Ausdruck des Territorialitätsprinzips, welches die (offizielle) Mehrsprachigkeit des Landes organisiert. Diese Vorstellung von relativ stabilen Sprachgrenzen und in sich homogenen Sprachgruppen, welche die Sprachlandschaft der Schweiz ausmachen sollen, ist sicher nicht unschuldig am Erfolg der Röstigraben-Metapher (Büchi 2003a;, die als übliche Bezeichnung der Grenze zwischen der deutsch-und der französischsprachigen Schweiz fungiert. Ebendiese Vorstellung (Sprachideologie) von der starken Anbindung von Sprache an Raum führt dazu, dass SprecherInnen als einsprachig und immobil wahrgenommen werden (Auer 2013). I confini tra le lingue nazionali fanno parte dell'autorappresentazione linguistica della Svizzer... more I confini tra le lingue nazionali fanno parte dell'autorappresentazione linguistica della Svizzera e sono espressione del principio di territorialità che organizza il purilinguismo (ufficiale) del Paese. Questa immagine di confini linguistici relativamente stabili e di gruppi linguistici omogenei che caratterizzerebbero il paesaggio linguistico della Svizzera spiega il successo della metafora della « barriera di Rösti » , solitamente utilizzata per designare la frontiera tra la parte germanofona e la parte francofona della Svizzera. Questa stessa rappresentazione (ideologia linguistica) della connessione tra la lingua e lo spazio geografico risulta anche in una percezione dei locutori come monolingui e immobili (Auer 2013). Finora la ricerca sui confini o gruppi linguistici ha spesso ulteriormente rafforzato questa rappresentazione, concentrandosi sulle « entità » definite da questi confini vedi ad es. Windisch e al. 1992; 1994 ; Meune 2010; 2011). Negli ultimi anni la ricerca sociologica e linguistica mette però un nuovo accento sull'investigazione dei processi di tracciamento di confini (Gal & Irvine 1995; Lamont & Molnár 2002). Basandosi sul lavoro pionieristico di Fredrik Barth (1969) si dimostra che i confini culturali, sociali, politici, ma anche linguistici, sono processi relazionali di discorsi e pratiche (Kaiser 1998; Donnan & Haller 2000; Jones 2010; Wastl-Walter & Meinhof 2010). Il tracciamento di confini tra lingue oppure varietà di lingue e la (ri)produzione di comunità linguistiche sono ormai compresi come processi ideologici (Gal & Irvine 1995), che rendono rilevanti le differenze linguistiche per la costituzione di gruppi linguistici che sembrano essere ancorati in un territorio specifico (Urciuoli 1995; Johnstone 2010; Maehlum 2010).
