There's a lot too be defined by the Data Protection Agency and that still needs to be compatible with our LGPD (wich was based on EU GDPR), Civil and Administrative Law Code, and our Constitution.

@driusan 9front. Here is a solid reason; having a new to you computer is an opportunity to mess around. Once you put GNU+Linux on the thing, you are a little locked in after setting it up, configuring it, and copying files over. Use this opportunity to tinker. You can always blow it away later.
Side note, some Thinkpads have extra slot for like a WWAN card or something. You can get SSDs that fit into this slot if you have one. Consider filling this slot if its empty, and duel booting!
Apropos of nothing:
JIT compilation is nice because it allows getting decent performance out of software that isn't shipped as a binary compiled for some specific actual-machine architecture (though it could be a binary for a virtual one, eg. Java bytecode or CIL). But since it is done at runtime, that means that it introduces compilation pauses, which can potentially be disruptive. Furthermore, since it's done at runtime, aggressive compiler optimizations can be prohibitively expensive compared to AOT compilation - though on the other hand, a JIT compiler has access to actual real-world data to optimize for, whereas the AOT compiler must guess.
Assume we want to distribute something that isn't specific to any actual machine architecture and also isn't source code (perhaps because we're targeting resource-constrained environments) - it could be bytecode, or it could be some AST representation. How about compiling at load-time rather than at runtime? This does remove the big benefit of JIT compilation (access to real-world data for adaptive optimization), but it also means that compilation pauses only occur at predictable and controllable times. We could tighten the screw a bit further: Use a compiler-friendly IR (CPS, SSA, etc.) and then do all the heavy optimization ahead of time, and then only defer code generation to load-time. *Possibly* one could have a cheap peephole optimizer at load-time too, just to do simple "don't be an idiot" target-specific optimizations.
The only work I'm aware of that's more or less shaped like this is the Slim Binaries that were used in some Oberon systems in the early 90s.
.NET and Android have both done install-time compilation in various ways. For a while, the Apple App Store did device-specific compilation (tuning for each chip) from LLVM IR the first time a device with a particular chip installed an app, then caches it. That’s much more efficient than having every device do the compilation.

Reading through the fossil source code and refactoring to clean up and get familiar, already found and fixed a few stupid but mostly harmless bugs. Most recently, telling fossil to print out the list of file systems when none are configured suicides.
So if you launch a fossil with just a console, to configure interactively, and prompt for the list, hahaha no you don't

To set the current fs, and then

If you run fsys without args, it looks like it's suppppposed to clear the current fs.
Instead, it clears a _second variable_ for current fs because there's two of them 🤦♂️
And it doesn't even clear that! It sets it to the name of the first fs!
Fortunately, setting the wrong variable to the wrong value is fine
Because that variable isn't used after startup and is only used to set a processs name for the os

It stores all data in a hash table on disk. So, when the fs fails, you can take the hash of the fs root and reset the live fs, which is just a write buffer, and you're fine

Fwiw I've also found some general 9front bugs too.
E.g. if you have a function declared in a header and use it but accidentally have only a static implementation, 7l prints the wrong function name as the source.
Reading through the source, i think this is because undef, which checks for unresolved symbols, is called after everything else is done, and it calls diag, which uses curtext as the source, and curtext will not be valid at that point since undef doesn't set it
I'm gonna have to check the other linkers to see if they do the same.
Fwiw fossils code is less bad than ventis in many ways.

Last time i ran into a deadlock i fixed it in like three or four hours. This is the exact kind of programming I'm best at, and it's with a project I'm familiar with and have used for 3+ years (without, i might add, any data loss or corruption so long as i ran fshalt, across at least four machines).
Fossil has very simple data structures and _already mostly works_. I'm not worried about deadlocks. If there were still data corruption or loss issues that i was aware of I'd be much more hesitant, but all that I'm intending to is related to in memory and on-CPU logic. I have no intention of changing anything about the disk format.
Venti is simple enough that neoventi seemed like a good idea. Compatibility with the disk format was the hardest part.
I think fixing fossil will be less work than trying to replace it, and fixed fossil + neoventi will do most of what i want. Venti is where the interesting stuff happens anyways.
And, importantly, if I'm wrong, i can just stop working on it and go back to e.g. wbfs. I also don't have access to the latest neoventi or pdffs sources until i get back to my pc, so I'm stuck with what i have on the reform; this seemed a reasonable short term obsession

especially when that concurrency bug leads to slightly wrong stuff getting written to permanent storage that will then violate some invariant 5 weeks later when you touch some file and a snapshot is taken at the same time.
you need some external way to capture the hang/crash/deadlock. (you can't attach the debugger on the crapped out file-system)
you then need to find the data on disk that is wrong. (good luck asking people to them you their 12TB disk images).
and then you need to come up with a theory how that could have ended up like that on disk and prove it!
to really prove it you'd likely come up with some instrumentation that can catch that before it gets written.
it is reeally freaking hard, man.

... yeah i can? That's how i debugged tbe previous deadlock. Keep a dedicated fs with acid and enough utilities to use it and snap the processes to a different disk - or straight to venti with ramfs+vac.
sure you can do that in your development environment... but its definitely a challenge to get your users to do that for you.

@technomancy FreeBSD has always been my server unix-like of choice, and I’ve been doing a lot more with it on the desktop for the last few weeks. I also had to reinstall a linux box yesterday and today. FreeBSD just feels *so* much nicer throughout.
I know FreeBSD Core is still “investigating” — I really hope they don’t blow this. But there’s always NetBSD.

I have no idea what is going on here. This is from the pcap filter man page. Why the masking and shifting and what is up with ip[2:2]? This part of tcpdump has remained a mystery to me for decades.

@ori @b0rk Small correction. The last one is the size of the TCP header, encoded in the high nibble of byte 12. I dove into this last night and finally understood it. It takes the full length of the IP packet (which wraps the TCP packet) and subtracts the IP and TCP header lengths. If the result is zero, we have a packet without data.

Two of the most important lessons I learned in grad school:

Unitasking was default when I had my Mac SE. You could multitask with MultiFinder, but you couldn't get very far until you upgraded the system RAM (which I did get about a year after getting the computer, thankfully).
System 7 came along and now multitasking was mandatory. I missed old "Uni"Finder sometimes.
Before System 7 and especially before the MultiFinder, you had a handful of specialized utilities called "Desk Accessories" that could be run alongside your application. They were written as device drivers, which is how they shared the CPU with the actual running program. The basic ones were a little desk calculator, a little 15-sliding-tile puzzle, a control panel (which was a VERY simple thing before System 6 or so), and a few other very simple utilities, like one to configure the printer, called "Chooser." Of course, some people wrote larger and more complex utilities you could buy to use as desk accessories. I recall MS Word 4.0 for Macintosh came with a thesaurus DA that was kinda nifty.
When System 7 came along, you could barely tell the difference between DAs and APPLications. The DAs showed up in the Finder as Applications, except that the default icon was horizontally flipped, with the left hand writing, instead of the right hand.

Well there's a reason I was talking about having a hard real-time core. The UI wouldn't be locked up. (On a single core it would fall back to preempting; on a multicore, it could lock up a core for a bit and it's not a big deal because the UI will just, work. I don't want the UI to be _able_ to stutter no matter _what_ the scheduler does.)

(Preemption would only be a fallback _between_ the two, where the entire cooperative system gets preempted in favor of the real-time system as needed on uniprocessors, I think. A system wherein the kernel lets the real-time process run and gives it a specified _maximum upper bound time chunk_, and that process _commits to yielding_ by the end of it, sorta? Statically verifiable "cannot take more than x microseconds."
I'm not sufficiently aware of prior art to know if this makes sense; I should check out plan9's realtime scheduling facilities.
I'd be assuming that since the kernel is promising the rt code _not_ to take its processor away, there's no rish of cache drops and such, so you'd have to account for _exceeding_ cache sizes, but not for random flushes...

Well, in most realtime systems you want to keep load below 10% and plan for worst cases.
If every process knows how much time it needs, you could just refuse to start more tasks if you don't have the cycles.

Well, I'm not thinking of realtime for the sake of having a RTOS, I'm thinking of things like "How can I eliminate tail latency and audio stutter on my existing system?"
Let's say I have an audio player open on my plan9 system. I want to ensure that there will _never_ be stutter. How can I do this? There's an easy option, but i'm going to eliminate cheat codes and add a constraint: "with gapless playback." That is, there should be no period _between files_ in which the audio driver buffer is empty or waiting.
I'm going to start by acknowledigng that you can't. You can never hit 100% perfection here, because we live in an imperfect world.
If I'm playing back a CD, I can't guarantee that the disc doesn't have a scratch that takes a few tries to read back successfully for instance. With plan9, if my media is on a remote drive, I can't guarantee the network won't drop entirely, or have minor packet loss
One obvious solution is to buffer _ahead_ of time. Many portable CD players - which have to deal with being in pockets and getting jostled! - ended up having ten second audio buffers in memory towards the end of the CD era. Minor issues with the disc could be smoothed over because this bought time.
Keeping load minimal won't help if I'm I/O bound, not CPU.
But to play back audio, there's a few steps needed:
- I/O to retrieve encoded samples
- CPU to decode samples into a buffer
- Buffer needs to be handed off to the driver
It's not terribly hard to enforce that the audio driver gets top priority to hand the buffer off to the hardware. But audio playback is an inherently real time process; you must hand over >20ms of samples every 20ms, and depending on audio source you may not be able to have the data ready ahead of time.
So, how solve this? I have a few ideas, but no time to write them out rn because I already wasted time writing this out lmao

Yeah, ionice. I've had processes with the lowest ionice and nice priority still bring my Linux machines to a standstill. This is the same two systems I had that problem with, so either an SSD going pear-shaped, or something inherently bad in the CPU architecture causing that kind of insane i/o-bound vapor lock.

If resources can be temporarily unavailable you need that much buffer to compensate. If its just the disk that is unavailable maube have a buffer of the file you are playing so you can at least skip inside that.

Hilariously, when Mickey$oft reimplemented VMS to create the first real modern OS for peecees (NT, OS/2 Warp doesn't count), they listened to us, and used utf16 for internal stuff. Now that even 32-bit unicode is a variable-width encoding, it doesn't matter.
Working at AT&T for an idiot boss wasn't fun, and I've never touched a Unix since. And won't. Ever.

Remember when software came as a boxed set? Disks/discs, manuals, user guide, etc. My first was Red Hat, then Corel Linux. Both in the 90's.

It's considered incomplete to try to check in code with user-visible functionality that's not explained in the accompanying man page so it can be tested with by reading that page.

i'm very curious about everyone who says "I'd look there first", if I want to figure out how to do something new I think I'll usually google how to do it rather than look at the man page, and then maybe later look at the man page to look up the details

@b0rk For me, it is avery very old habit. When I started out poking at Unix systems, if I wanted to "get information from outside the computer I was on", I could, if I was lucky, turn my head and ask someone else in the same room.
Otherwise, I would have to fire up a newsreader, post to UseNet, wait for the UUCP spool to empty (over a modem), wait for the reply to be written, then wait for the relevant article to trickle back in a later UUCP update batch.
I will, frequently, after having opened the man page, start a web search pretty soon after, because many man pages are badly written (and I must say that good technical writing is a skill that doesn't necessarily correlate with "ability to write code").
@b0rk It depends. I use Google first when I try to find the right tool for the job, and those searches usually yield full commands that I can just copy-paste. But a manpage in this case won't help as I don't know what to man.
When I know the right tool, and it's not ffmpeg, I try to craft the correct command myself. That helps me remember it better.
@b0rk in general I'm in the terminal, I know the command should do the thing I want, and man is in the terminal so I don't have to switch app (and being distracted by the browser)
@b0rk for me, I think it's a combination of an 'old people' thing and a 'highly suspicious of a lot of the modern Internet' thing.
When I learned to use computers, competent search engines and rich online resources like Stack Exchange were a long way off – even having the Internet in your home without paying per minute wasn't around yet. So you had to develop the skills of finding stuff out from the available local resources like manuals, because that was all you had.
Then good search engines came along, but I was always aware that there's a risk of depending too much on them and losing the ability to figure stuff out yourself. Even now, I sometimes find myself coding without the Internet (or effectively so – laptop on train with terrible connectivity) and it's useful that I can still get things done.
And now search engines are all getting enshittified, and/or monetised, and/or straight-up _worse_ (Google doesn't return the results I actually wanted nearly as often as it used to). And the less said about 2020s answers to this kind of question, the better. So I'm doubly glad I haven't abandoned my old approaches to things. More and more I feel it's important to keep external corporately-provided "do it for you" services at arm's length, and not base your whole workflow on them to the extent that you're a captive market or dependent on them not going down.

In rsync's case in particular, I go to the HTML version of the man page on Samba's website and look it up there. I think if the man page was easier to invoke outside of a terminal window with browser/editor bindings (read: CTRL+F), I train my brain to use the local copy.
@b0rk It kind of depends on the question—usually my question is something like “what's the option to do such-and-such again?” which is easily answered by --help or the manpage.
When it's something more conceptual, then --help probably won't explain it and my first stop will be the manpage to see whether it does, because it's authoritative and I already have it. If that fails, then I'll try the web, and maybe a relevant book if I have one.

Why does `man stow` mention perl or Carnegie mellon's depo program? That man page is pretty good all around but does have stuff to skim over that doesn't feel like it's there in service of the user.

I'll keep the idea of having a docs subcommand spawn a local web server and broswer to view guides, could be useful.
@b0rk there's also the aspect that man pages are stored on my system when the tool is installed, whereas websites inevitably disappear over time and can be temporarily inaccessible for any number of reasons
@b0rk I've written man pages before when building internal tools. It was fun learning the ROFF language or whatever. Part of my reluctance to do it with general tools is the requirement to install them as satellite files which is a bit of a pain when it comes to single binary downloads.
I know there's alternate locations you can put them, like /usr/local/man and even $HOME/.local/share/man the directory structure after that is also a bit of a pain. 😅 And then there's the need to remember to clean them up after the fact if you no longer use the tool.
It'd be neat if some of these apps had the ability to drop the files and a cleanup step to remove them so they could still be single binary. Another thought would be extending man to see if the the requested page is available normally, and if not, see if there's a binary in the path that matches that name? Maybe the man page could be embedded in another section so it didn't have to be executed to generate help? 🤔
@b0rk I very much agree with your consideration: search is worse & frustrating, look for trustworthy sources. For older people (like me..) it's probably easier or more natural to switch back to reading the manual instead of searching as the first option.
I understand how the doc website was more logical to you. But I think a second reason to prefer a man page or readme or whatever, is that websites are so ethereal. They require maintenance that's often not content related, so they get abandoned.

When I made that site it felt like github pages would be there forever, and maybe it still will, but I feel less certain of what the future of that looks like than I did.
@b0rk one advantage with a man page packaged with the tool is the versioning. The man page should hopefully be the correct version for hte installed tool, avoiding some potential confusion.
I do tend to use man pages for old C libraries if I need docs too. Interestingly I don't do that for Go packages (I either use the local src doc strings that my editor jumps to, or I'll use the pkg.go.dev site).
(obviously there are no man pages for go pkgs, but I rarely use go doc directly)
@b0rk FWIW, I first write the man page, then the code. Helps me clarify what the user wants, how I will interact with the tool. I then generate the README from the man page.
@b0rk I almost always google my way to a website manual when I need to know how a tool works. Or I settle for `command --help`. Maybe I should add man into the rotation
@b0rk The point of having a man page (or as you edited the original post: a --help) is that it's self-contained and, hopefully, true to the actual thing you're trying to run. The website requires an internet connection and it might be about a newer version than you have (did your distro or you forget to upgrade the tool?) or older (did the author forget to update the documentation?) and while a site is often a better UX (graphical browsers and whatnot), those are issues to be considered.
@b0rk note: Because Debian requires man pages, I notice that lot of the are written by debian developers, so I assume also a lot of developers don’t use man pages. (note also that writing man pages was very difficult, not just content, but technically: complex non standardized language, various tools, and I still not sure there is a guide on conventions)

* old pre-good-search habits of reading manpages first, which also gives me lots of practice at navigating them.
* I often only want some specific piece of information (eg 'what switch is used for ...') that I can find with a search of the manpage in less
* Internet search has gotten untrustworthy and bad.
* Sometimes I want to see the authoritative 'what the program says' instead of people describing it.

Some of the Debian man pages have made their way back upstream (not any of mine, that I am aware of).
I started using computers when they were not always online, so I grew up with local documentation as the primary source.

Scenario here would be ssh into a *nix environment from Android or Windows, where you rarely have that documentation locally. Of course you may offer HTML-pages additionaly

@b0rk my experience is that I can often figure out what I need from the man page in one of 3 ways:
- often the first paragraph(ish) clarifies whatever I was confused about
- the EXAMPLES section (usually near the end) often has exactly the example I'd want
- often searching the man page ('/' to search, 'n' for next result) for keywords finds me what I need (another option) pretty fast
I'm skewed towards this from years of offline computer use (work on trains with crappy/no wifi, though it started with an offline desktop in my room in high school before wifi was a thing), but also reinforced by recent nonsense in both AI summaries and keyword-spamming sites...
@b0rk Yestwrday I wanted to use exiftool to strip all tags from an image. Couldn’t easily find it in the man page so I piped it to an AI and it spat out the answer. I’m not sure if this was better, or more ecological. But Google was going to give me an AI summary anyway amidst AI slop posts so why not skip the middleman
@b0rk Depends on the tool. You included --help, which I use more often than man. For git I prefer the internet, because it's too complex and I usually need a combination of options. For others I prefer --help or man. Just today I did that for adduser.
@b0rk I guess if I am doing stuff on the terminal, the terminal it's the first place I look for help, so --help, man pages, and tldr. My gateway drug to Linux was DJGPP on DOS, and I was using quite a lot the info pages there, even a decade before adopting Emacs. I know Info gets a bad rap, and I admittedly not use it anymore, but I liked that it was giving way more information than a man page, often with tutorial like spirit,
@b0rk For a complex tool I am almost always looking for an example for a non-trivial use case. The man pages are written backwards for this need.
If I'm looking at a tutorial and want to understand deeply what each flag means, I'll go to the man page for precise answers.
Otherwise I may look at the bottom of the man page for examples. Few man pages have good examples, but they are the useful bits to learn use cases. A focused tutorial: 'tutpage' maybe? Would be better.

Basically, I am already in the terminal, and there's a chance that I could find my answer in 5-15 seconds, so I try, and then move on if not.
Now, when I have successfully done that for a command before, the next time I have an issue with that command I will waste 15 minutes in the manpage because it was so easy the last time and I shouldn't give up. 😅

@b0rk The Unix User's/Programmer's Manual is the *reference* documentation, but was never intended to provide introductory guides or conceptual overviews — as originally distributed those were separate documents. The man page should tell you how to do the thing when you already know what you want and that there's a command/function to do it, and you just need the invocation details. Unfortunately the higher level conceptual documentation has fallen by the wayside.

@b0rk The broadening of the programming environment has also taken its toll. The manual covers C and shell programming, but a lot of work today is in different language environments that have their own documentation, some good and some bad. Even in the standard utilities, something like awk or sed is very difficult to learn from the reference manual. Perl at least was always good at making manual pages for every installed package, but they depend on authors to get the information structure down.
@wollman this all makes a lot of sense to me, personally I've never been a C programmer and so the classic "unix reference manual" style always feels like a bit of an alien life form and like it came from a different time.
@b0rk The man page is closer to the source of information, rather than some random website one found via web search. Plus, given differences between OSs/distro releases, how do you know what you get from a web search matches up with what you have actually installed?
@b0rk personally, it's usually the case that I've used the tool before, I know that it does the thing I want, I just don't remember the invocation details.
So, it's faster to grep the manpage for keywords than launch a web browser.
@b0rk I want to love man pages. I do find them great as detailed reference material, although sometimes a bit impenetrable.
But I don’t (usually) find they are pedagogically well structured. Eg, in general they do not provide lots of examples of uses, from simple basics to more involved use cases. In general they don’t have split in to “basic use and overview” and “advanced use and detail”.
I might be holding it wrong and / or not very bright, though.

@b0rk Another reason I can think of is when you're working in environments that have strict version policies, so looking at available man pages gets you the documentation for the version of the tool you have installed. Needing to support older Ansible releases? Gotta check the bundled documentation with ansible-doc because the website is the latest rolling version.

Rubbish man-pages do exist, though, just the same as pretty bad help output. It's when I run into those that I start looking on the net.
@b0rk I got spoilt by the amazing quality and consistency of OpenBSD's man pages. Even when searching the web, I do 'man <command>' first.
@b0rk I think for me, certain tools feel old and unixy, and a man page feels right. And then certain tools feel new and I expect a website.
But also, man pages feel more correct for “what’s the syntax for this specific thing that must have a flag?” and a website or LLM is much more correct for “how do I use this thing in varied ways?”
@hyperpape I feel the same way but it's also disorienting because I grew up with the Linux coreutils, and they feel old and unixy, but their man pages afaik are unmaintained and I think it really undermined my confidence in man pages as a format even for old unixy-feeling tools

@b0rk Probably has to do with how you grew up on the internet. Before StackOverflow, there really wouldn’t have been anything useful on the web; “RTFM” was indeed the generic advice (and sometimes phrased more politely) on Usenet and mailing lists.
Also a factor: the quality of the man pages you’re used to (BSD man pages tend(ed?) to be significantly better than “go use the ‘info’ page” Linux default).

@b0rk if I am looking for a specific flag and I know the keyword I'm looking for, man page it is, but if I just have a fuzzy idea, like "find all files created after June 4" then typing that into an AI spits out the right flags far easier than scrolling through pages of "-newermt" in a man page
@b0rk if I look at the man page first, its because I want to stay on the command line. I forgot that tldr existed, so glad to be reminded of that in this thread.
@b0rk for git I agree, but that it is mostly to find the right subcomands (or recipes), so like searching for unknown/forgotten commands. But curl, ssh, rsync: i find easier: is -P or -p or -e … to specify the port? How to filter, etc. I find googling slower, with obsolete comments or without good explanation (eg putting a lot of short options together) so I must go again to man page.
@b0rk I struggled with which option to choose for that exact reason! There’s a fairly complex interaction between what kind of new thing I’m doing, how the command is structured, and how much of an idea I have of how to approach it. A “what flags do I need to pass” question (more common with curl) will almost always start with man, but for “how do I even approach this” (more common with git) I’m more likely to start with search. But if I think I can find the right man page, I start there.

@b0rk I'm kinda half and half right now between `man` and `cmd --help`, I've been using `man` more since I have `nvim` set as my `man pager`, so I can easily grep for parts of the documentation. For example, today I was looking at a series of commands `git clone && git checkout $tag && git submodule`, and I thought to myself, that looks redundant, bet you can do all that with just `git clone`, so I grepped the git clone man page for `checkout` and `submodule` to find all the relevant flags

i tend to use search engines to find a tool if i don't already have one i think suitable.
for simpler tools, -h/--help usually works.

I'm not sure how I choose, I _think_ I use man page first if I need just a specific detail like the name of an option I know is there. If I'm not sure of what I'm looking for, I go to Google. Man pages usually are not very good in introducing/explaining use cases, so not a good starting point, but for a specific detail, they tend to be predictably usable.
@b0rk So, this is a conditionalized problem, my P(man page first | man page exists) is high – because if it's a new tool, and it has a man page, usually the man page is *actually quite good*, and actually fulfills the role of "manual" better than most (say, GNU coreutils) manpages, which just are slightly more in-depth versions of `tool --help` (without the actual structural difference that would make them manuals, as opposed to CLI option references).
Lots of tools don't ship with manpages…
@b0rk reading the manpage I also accidentally learn stuff I wasn't looking for. Oftentimes I learn that what I was planning to do was the wrong approach and learn how to do it better.
Reading the man page also makes the knowledge "sink in" more for me, so next time I won't have to look it up.
That's why I read the --help and the manpage first. Your brain might work differently, I'm not trying to tell you you should as well.

Caveat: I spent years in a techpubs department writing and maintaining UNIX man pages. I have strong opinions!
@b0rk With cross platform differences in CLI tools, the man pages locally are more authoritative than Google.
Mostly, though, I go there first to verify the flags provided in a script or other source, or to convert short flags to long flags in my own scripts, since I prefer that “self-documenting” enhancement.
@b0rk generally with CLI-tools, I already know how they work and just have a new case that I'm fairly confident it can do but need to quickly check the syntax for. In this case, man is the straightforward way to find it.
I have never found them at all useful to learn a new tool, and perfectly useless to discover tools with.

I also find myself leaning even more heavily into man pages as the web becomes AI slop answers that may or may not show real commands and arguments.
@b0rk For much of my working life any one computer wasn't guaranteed to be on the internet -- I'm in and out of cleanrooms (and we don't want Russian hacker kids in our $100M hardware so definitely no internet there) and/or in the air trying to make some instrument work on some survey airplane. Now I'm retired but the habit is still to look locally first and only reach outward if that doesn't get me anywhere.
@b0rk I use GNU Emacs to read manual pages. It has a builtin `man' command to display man pages. It also has hyperlinks to jump to. `man -k' and `appropos' helps for searching. More advanced `info' manuals are there if needed. Offline reading has its own benefits. My main issue is the man pages are very terse at the beginner level. But very smooth once we use a command more than 1 times.

Furthermore, I learned quite some cool features just by reading man pages. Kudos to openssh's sshd_config(5) btw.
Small languages like awk have their complete documentation in there, and this is great.
@b0rk 90%+ of the time I want to know either: "what does command line option X do" or "which command line option do I need to supply to do X". Often it's also "refresh my memory" so I'm not starting from zero knowledge of the tool.
Either a man page or a "help" page is good for answering those questions. It's also much faster than a web search, even back when web searches could give you the info you wanted in the first few links.
Web search is needed when the problem is abstract and you don't know what to search for in the docs. Like, "I used git rm to delete a file, how do I get that file back"
Also, man pages / help pages are good for simple tools with few options. They're painful for tools with dozens of sub-modules each with their own command line options, but that also respect global command line options (i.e. git).
@b0rk "the right version" is the biggest reason. Partially this is personal: I already know how a lot of tools work, and by the time I'm consulting reference docs, it's a complex cross-platform subtlety. In fact, I have run into problems before with MANPATH where I have multiple versions of a tool installed (say, a GNU version and a BSD version) where I *still* get the wrong version locally! (That type of misconfiguration has become vanishingly uncommon in the last decade, thankfully)
@b0rk for some commands I know the manpage is decent and I'll look there. for others I know it doesn't exist or is crap, so I'll check -h or just search online. I sometimes reach for it first on new commands, sometimes not. no real rhyme or reason, mostly just whatever direction my brain goes in the moment.
I do, however, hate certain manpages with a fiery passion. like builtins being one giant manpage that you can't search because it looks for results in all builtin commands. hateful design.

what's trained me not to use man pages is minimal systems where they aren't installed. I always go for --help first.
(-? is not be a valid argument in many programs, but most dump their usage on an invalid argument, and it's easier than typing --help)

Knowing how to use man means I can work offline too. So practicing that skill when a fallback is present is a worthy investment

@b0rk I think most man pages have a lot of detail and are great resources. But.....While they go into great detail they lack the concept of basic use. Take the tar command. Great compression utility with lots of options. Most people just want to decompress files. How do you do that? I had to search on google for the answer. Yes the proper syntax was buried in the man page in different parts. I think a basic command example at the begining of the man page about what most will be using the utility for would help.
@b0rk I typically start with `-h/--help` flags to see any obvious answer. Then move to man pages after the fact. If I can't find the answer there then move up to a web search.
@b0rk There are still cases where a system has no internet access (regardless of whether for technical, organizational, or legal reasons). Every tool should have reasonably comprehensive offline help/documentation; it could be --help (if it's complete), it could be man, it could be info, or even documentation in plain .txt — it doesn't matter, as long as I still have access to the documentation on a system cut off from the network.
Every non-trivial tool failing to do this is just deficient.
Additionally, websites (contrary to popular belief) aren't eternal. They disappear—and the more niche the tool, the more likely it is to happen. And when they go, the documentation vanishes with them.
@b0rk Very much depends. If I think it's likely solved by a simple feature of the tool, like a subcommand or option then I'll look in the help or man page. If it's a higher order "I want to solve this uncommon/situational problem" I'll probably go for a web search... and then cry to myself that the search engines are so bad.

However, not all tools are equal. Some tools have not even a man page or something. In those cases a google search and stackoverflow often will do.

Many tools come with bash completion when installed through a package manager.
So the first thing I really try nowadays is:
- type a few promising characters
- hit TAB
- if unsuccessful, delete some, type some new.
If this won't work, I might try the man page - or a google search, it depends.

Looking up what a specific argument does is fine in 100% of the cases, but rsync and sudoers are the two examples that come to mind when it comes to obnoxiously inscrutable structure, if you came to the man page to learn how to use the thing specific way.

I don’t often use actual man pages (except man bash), because I’ve been conditioned by how many tools don’t have them: in theory everything in Ubuntu should, because it’s from Debian which also should, but there’s lots of man 7 undocumented in there so I was Pavlov’ed away from it.

@b0rk I like the convenience and predictable UX of a man page. I can press Esc-H in my shell to open the man page for whatever command I have pending on the command line, and (assuming it has one) I know I can always expect plain text with consistent key bindings to page through it, search for keywords, etc. The biggest unknown is always the potential quality of a man page, but that’s also true for searching online, etc.

@b0rk J think my only common exception to using the man page first is ffmpeg. It just does so much that man page format listing of options breaks down. I have a text file of my commonly used commands, and if I can’t make it do what I need to I skip the man page and search duckduckgo for tutorials.

@b0rk Man pages have a huge edge over searching the web in that they are generally part of whatever package provides the command they document. They aren’t for an earlier version or a different implementation. They are not usually written by people with weak understanding of the program.
@b0rk I used to use manpages a lot but so much of the software I use doesn't have them, or doesn't have particularly meaningful or comprehensive content there, that I have learned to start looking elsewhere. Git is kind of the exception here, the manpages are pretty good.

program synthesis is a research area that combines searching over program spaces with formal verification. sometimes these are separated, other times we can get an SMT solver to help with the search, as well as doing the verification part.
in any case, it's hard to overstate how cooked the searching part is, due to LLMs. they're just incredibly good at it, and this is nice because our previous solutions were not particularly impressive.
so far LLMs haven't changed the verification part at all

I don't know program synthesis, but I'd want a continuous notion of utility, not a binary one. I'd also want to figure out the best way to combine them (utility/cost is the most obvious, but may be gameable). I'd also want a parameter for the amortized costs (e.g. training).
I get that it's unbeatable ignoring computational costs. Making the goal "be as good as an LLM" is not helping me understand the trade-off.

for very small scale synthesis, like a peephole superoptimizer, there's no problem with synthesis via CEGIS + enumeration
scale up the synthesis target and you'll never be able to beat an LLM, I can guarantee this
@regehr the question for me there is always going to be how much that is due to the fact that the LLMs will have had many of the things (or equivalent) you're searching for in their training set, while an SMT solver etc really has to do the work to find them 'from scratch'. (In practice this might be not an issue at all: as long as it finds whatever you're looking for, and does so quickly, you probably don't care about this, but from an academic point of view this does bother me...)

@regehr @bartcopp it's a shame, because that's really close to a kind-of-legit use case: problem A in domain D1 is very similar/identical to problem B in domain D2 in some key respects, and the solutions for B fit very nicely with A, but it's rare to find someone who works in both domains, so you could spend an entire career in D1 and never know about B.
so it might be nice to have a machine say, "hey, this thing looks structurally a lot like this other thing (and here's a URL to some papers)"

@joe @regehr Sounds like a testable hypothesis? There are small local models you can run on the kind of 16 GB VRAM GPU you'd have in a consumer gaming PC. Not my area but my understanding is that you can reclaim some of the gap between smaller and larger models by fine tuning. I'd be interested in knowing the answer, too.

@pervognsen @regehr yeah that’s part of what makes me wonder, since (from anecdata I’ve seen) running the larger downloadable models on a single machine often takes minutes between response tokens. maybe more interactive still than leaving z3 to run for a few days hoping for a solution to appear, but the sorts of things agent apps automate would probably take a day or two at that rate too

Several _umtx_op() operations allow the blocking time to be limited, failing the request if it cannot be satisfied in the specified time period. This isn't my area, but it seems that some kinds of malware have clever ways to detect that they're being run under emulation (because running malware under emulation is a thing that folks who are trying to analyze malware would do), and then behave differently if so (which, of course, makes the analyst's job harder).
It's sensible to say that a notion of "correctness" for an emulator could be something like "observationally equivalent to the system being emulated". I'd noticed a breeze coming from the circuit breaker panel due to shitty insulation for ages, way before the fire
I think the high winds of the storm, at like 5F temperatures, was providing inadvertent _active cooling_ to the circuit breaker
So as the wires and breaker were heating up due to overload, the breakwr was cooled down
But the circuit ran through a better insulated part of the house
So eventually, the breaker trips - but the circuit was already far, far hotter than the breaker
Still not certain how the heat translated into fire several hours after the breaker tripped, but - that might explain why the breaker failed?

We've been incredibly fortunate. Given that the house was on fire two days ago, i cannot imagine being in a better situation right now. This was an absolute tragedy, and some amazing people have responded with miracles.
Shelter, at least for the short term, has been sorted out thanks to a friend's casual acquaintance being an absolute angel.
The Red Cross, bless em, reached out to us and helped us with temporary lodging while we figured out something a little more stable and, unprompted, offered more assistance due to the ongoing storms.
Rabbi brought food through the storm, even though it took 10 to 15 minutes to get his truck turned back around.
There's so many people that stepped up to help that I'm struggling to even remember them all.
The fire and police departments responded very quickly even though we didn't actually know there was a fire until after they showed up, they got the information they needed and then got us out of the cold while they took care of it. We never even saw flames, and I'm grateful that they were able to keep the damage as minimal as it is, and that they got us in touch with the red cross even as they were fighting the fire.
We're okay, mostly. Horribly rattled, but okay. Looks like almost everything that matters survived too - e.g. important documents, sentimental objects. Some things are horribly damaged, our home is partly in ruins, but. Even Bubbles, the sourdough starter baby, frozen as it is with the heat gone, is alive.
Based on info from the fire inspector plus own observations, looks like a faulty circuit breaker that failed to trip while moderately to severely overloaded for 12+ hours. Uncertain how exactly the flames started, since the breaker did eventually trip 2+ hours before the fire. Seems likely that residual extreme heat plus weather conditions and lack of windproofing on parts of the structure did Something. There was likely a *lot* of heat built up, there was definitely some fuel - e.g. some spiderwebs - near the breaker panel. Arc of it tripping may have ignited something slow burning which eventually hit structure. Don't know exactly, though the root cause seems certain.

@pervognsen I guess people romanticize it mostly because the file system hierarchy was just very simple in the pre-OS X days, so that’s part of the reason. The OS didn’t do much and there was no hidden “layer” underneath the Finder (although a lot of stuff was completely sealed away instead). You could look inside the System Folder, and each extension had a lovingly hand drawn icon. This is also why the “spacial” aspect worked well back then, and hasn’t been replicated today.

I have a couple of (great) recent Computer Engineering grads on my team, and been backfilling some of their software engineering knowledge. Based on the experience I've been thinking I should write an essay called "Boundaries before interfaces".
When it comes to breaking systems into smaller connected pieces, I find a lot of material out there talks about how to design interfaces between parts of a system. But interfaces cross boundaries, and being careful about where to draw those boundaries in the first place is at least as important.
Some boundaries are natural. For example, boundaries can source from different latency domains (machinery which must react in microseconds, vs milliseconds), or bandwidth limits, or security concerns, etc. Other boundaries come from who on a team can own a task. Or a bundle of code which can be tested hermetically. Or social boundaries, such as parts of a project being owned by multiple teams, cf. Conway's Law.
Anyway, once the boundaries are defined, the interfaces mostly write themselves. If the interfaces end up too wide, then the boundary was probably drawn in the wrong place.
Maybe working through a real-world example can help, such as the staff at a restaurant. A diner has a thin interface which drives a lot of hidden complexity. A nicely decoupled system exhibits these thin interfaces everywhere, and recursively.

Most of the programming books by the consultant types aren't very good. I would avoid, "Clean Code" or anything by Holub, Martin, Beck, Jeffries, et al. There are a lot of charlatans out there.
Speaking of...it has become popular to promote "katas" for practitioners. This is repeatedly solving the same trivial problem over and over to practice techniques like test-driven development. But a while back, a book called "Etudes for Programmers" came out that proposed an alternative that I like a lot better: programmers should challenge themselves with hard, technically difficult problems. The book proposed a dozen or so; implementing a machine emulator for a pedagogical computer; implementing a toy compiler for that computer; etc. I think this is wonderful: Etudes, not katas.

my own thoughts about software architecture (which I don't think are particularly sophisticated) require us to think about the data first. where does it live? how is it stored? how do we get at it? once these questions are answered, the code part is a lot more straightforward
@regehr In my experience this has been my downfall, because I usually start with "wouldn't it be fun if" and I figure out the data part as I go.
A recent example that is maybe applicable; when I was doing some funny things with x509 certs I tried to use a Rust library to try to easily parse and deal with the data part. The Rust library quickly reminded me of how detailed and annoying that spec is. Library is correct, me brain of "I want DNS name now" not.

Wanted: Advice from CS teachers
When teaching a group of students new to coding I've noticed that my students who are normally very good about not calling out during class will shout "it's not working!" the moment their code hits an error and fails to run. They want me to fix it right away. This makes for too many interruptions since I'm easy to nerd snipe in this way.
I think I need to let them know that fixing errors that keep the code from running is literally what I'm trying to teach.
Example of the problem:
Me: "OK everyone. Next we'll make this into a function so we can simply call it each time-"
Student 1: "It won't work." (student who wouldn't interrupt like this normally)
Student 2: "Mine's broken too!"
Student 3: "It says error. I have the EXACT same thing as you but it's not working."
This makes me feel overloaded and grouchy. Too many questions at once. What I want them to do is wait until the explanation is done and ask when I'm walking around.
I’ve taught programming like this, but I’m an increasingly huge fan of the debugging-first approach that a few people have been trying more recently. In this model, you don’t teach people to write code first, you teach them to fix code first.
I’ve seen a bunch of variations of this. If you have some kind of IDE (Smalltalk is beautiful for this, but other languages usually have the minimum requirements) then you can start with some working code and have them single-step through it and inspect variables to see if the behaviour reflects their intuition. Then you can give them nearly correct code and have them use that tool to fix the issues.
Only once they’re comfortable with that do you have them start writing code.
Otherwise it’s like teaching them to write an essay without first teaching them how to erase and redraft. If you teach people to get stuck before teaching them how to unstick themselves, it’s not surprising that they stop and give up at that point.

Like. We've had calculators for decades and still teach arithmetic. And functionally the average person needs to know probably more about mathematics and needs to read more than they did a century ago. The same will apply for code.
I would make a slightly different point, I think.
When I was at university, doing a degree in computer science, the first language they taught us was Pascal. The second was Prolog. I can’t remember which order the third and fourth were taught in, but they were Java and Haskell.
Of these, Java was the only one widely used in industry. In my subsequent career, I have rarely used any of these. But I have used the concepts I learned repeatedly.
The tools change. Eventually, modern IDEs will catch up with 1980’s Smalltalk in functionality. But the core concepts change far more slowly.
And this matters even more for school children, because they’re not doing a degree to take them on a path where the majority will end up as programmers, they’re learning a skill that they can use in any context.
I spent a little bit of time attached to the Swansea History of Computing Collection working to collect oral histories of early computing in Wales. Glamorgan university was the first to offer a vocational programming qualification. They had one day of access to a computer at the Port Talbot steelworks (at the time, the only computer in Wales) each week. Every week, the class would take a minibus to visit the computer. They would each take it in turns to run their program (on punch cards). If it didn’t work, they would try to patch to code (manually punching holes or taping over them) and would get to have another go at the end.
Modern programming isn’t really like that (though it feels like it sometimes). The compile-test cycle has shortened from a week to a few seconds. Debuggers let you inspect the state of running programs in the middle. Things like time-travel debugging let you see an invalid value in memory and then run the program backwards to see where the value was written!
But the concepts of decomposing problems into small steps, and creating solutions by composing small testable building blocks remain the same.
The hard part of programming hasn’t been writing the code since we moved away from machine code in punched tape. It’s always been working out what the real problem is and expressing it unambiguously.
In many ways, LLMs make this worse. They let you start with an imprecise definition of the problem and will then fill in the gaps based on priors from their training data. In a classroom setting, those priors will likely align with the requirements of the task. The same may be true if you’re writing a CRUD application that is almost the same as 10,000 others with a small tweak that you put in the prompt. But once it has generated the code then you need to understand that it’s correct. LLMs can generate tests, but unless you’re careful they won’t generate the right tests.
The goal isn’t to produce children who can write code. It’s to empower the children with the ability to turn a computer into a machine that solves their problems whatever those problems are and to use the kind of systematic thinking in non-computing contexts.
The latter of these is also important. I’ve done workflow consulting where the fact that the company was operating inefficiently would be obvious to anyone with a programming background. It isn’t just mechanical systems that have these bottlenecks.
And this should feed into curriculum design (the Computer Science Unplugged curriculum took this to an extreme and produced some great material). There’s no point teaching skills that will be obsolete by the time that the children are adults, except as a solvent for getting useful transferable skills into their systems. A curriculum should be able to identify and explain to students which skills are in which category.
(And, yes, I am still bitter my schools wasted so much time on handwriting, a skill I basically never use as an adult. If I hand write 500 words in a year, it’s unusual, but I type more than that most days)
Second that – Clojure and Haskell taught me so much, completely changed the way I write Java, Javascript or Python code, the three main programming languages for work. While I can still write in them, I most often don't, but the concepts learned perdure, as do the expectations (managed memory, seamless concurrency, immutable data structures with structural sharing, functions without side effects, first-class functions, ...).
In my experience, the people who write the best C++ are people who are proficient in Haskell. The worst are ones who are most proficient in C.

@david_chisnall @futurebird when I was a teenager I developed my first Doom source port and it was how I truly learned to program in C. Having an existing codebase of good code to work within is a godsend because you are constantly being subconsciously taught what "good code" looks like. Plus yes, everything you've said here too: most of the work involved in programming is about changing code and not just writing it. Learning to debug, read code and reason about it are all essential

When I taught friends how to code, I was less strict, but writing out the steps on paper was still a big part of it. I also wouldn't let people make changes to their code without first telling me what they thought was broken, and predicting/explaining what the change would do.
I think it's a very effective approach.

Stop using the term ‘AI’ anywhere.
It is a meaningless marketing term pushed by the worst parts of the tech industry. Don’t use a catch all for a bunch of unrelated things, name them individually and explain to users why they should care (if you can’t, don’t ship them at all). And make all of them off by default.
Feel free to pop up a dialog saying ‘This page is in a language that you haven’t said you speak, Firefox has optional on-device translation models trained ethically (see here for more information)k would you like to install them? (If you decide not to, you can change this decision later in settings) [ Never install translation models ] [ Never install translation models for this language ] [ Install translation model for this language ] [ Automatically install translation models for any language ]’.
Similarly, if a user hovers over an image with no alt text, feel free to pop up a dialog saying ‘This image has no text description. Firefox has an on-device image-recognition model that is ethically trained (see here for more information) that can attempt to provide one automatically. Would you like to install it? If you do not, you can later install it from settings. [ Do not install image-recognition model ] [ Install image-recognition model ]’.
And, in both of these cases, pop up that dialog at most once.
See how neither of these needed to say ‘AI’? Because they were explaining what the model did and why. This is how you communicate with users if you care about users more than you care about investors and hype trains.

If it were off-by-default you'd have an easy argument to fend off the majority of criticism. If Mozilla management and devs sincerely think this is the future of browsers, add it in in all the ways you think it might be useful, but have it all off and very easily addable (as David outlined).
If it is really useful to people, users will be clamouring for it, and you can go from there.
I can think of no way it could make sense to have it on-by-default, unless you count the fact that in that scenario lots of less technical people will then simply put up with it, and be added to the stats of "AI users" on Firefox.
Am I missing something? How does it being on-by-default serve anyone, and in what specific ways does it serve them?

@zzt @yoasif @fmasy @Rycochet @davidgerard My interpretation of the poll results is that the vast majority of people feel that the translation engine should be disabled as part of an AI kill switch, but there should be a way to re-enable the translation engine whilst leaving the kill switch otherwise active.

Missing option, if shouldn't be in the browser code in the first place. It should be an add-on that the user has to explicitly install.
A suspect lot of people voted for the, "but allow it to re-enabled," option due to it being the least shitty choice presented. Not because that is the behavior they actually desire.

Anyone who's ever written a poll or survey that's not *deliberately* a push poll knows that polls influence the beliefs of the people being polled, by choosing which options are presented vs hidden and by the exact wording of the question and options. It simply cannot be avoided, only minimized.

Nonsense like this isn't making that happen.
The choices as you present them are all, "AI code for everyone, but you can turn it off!" Except the kill switch feature doesn't even exist yet and you are already carving it up with exceptions. If your current trajectory holds true, and I'll bet good money it does, the kill switch is going to end up being nothing but exceptions, rendering it effectively useless.

I suspect, even more, that lack of ranked choice voting is hurting hard here.
A lot of people probably voted for the option presented that was closest to what they actually want. What they actually wabt isn't an option because Mozilla won't consider it.
But of the remaining options, there's a preference they'd have over the one they voted for.
Giving people a poll where the options they want are deliberately included is going to generate bad results which will only result in upsetting the community even more, because now you'll claim to have consent..

a list of each of the models used, what for, and whether they're trained on open data, each having a "disable this" switch
a thing right at the top of the list which says "I don't care, kill all this AI stuff"
but that would require putting a list of all the different things that Firefox is now using AI for and whether each is using fair models or not, which I suspect a lot of management won't want to document clearly to users

@firefoxwebdevs I'm trying to phrase this using as little expletives as possible: About 18 years, I installed Firefox because I needed a tool to look at webpages written in the hypertext markup language, transferred from their servers via the hypertext transfer protocol. That's arguably the only sensible usecase for an internet browser that we could come up with so far. Firefox was actually really good at that. It was fast. It worked decently well on my linux machine. Over the years it got even better. The extension system allowed for proper ad, script blockers and other privacy preserving add-ons.
That niche of "good browser" got emptier and until only Firefox remained. And for some bizarre reason the strategy right now is to yeet itself out of that niche? Because it totally makes sense to devote resources to some GenAI gimmicks, to then devote even more resources to implement a "kill-switch" to disable them?
Firefox has one job and one job only: Download and display websites. I don't see many resources devoted to that these days.
@firefoxwebdevs Also as a side note: The org I'm working on has banned genAI tools for projects above a certain level of confidentiality. Guess what? Firefox is banned as well and probably stays banned regardless of any kill switch.

Also you are looking at a compliance issue from a technical viewpoint. As the implications of genAI generated content wrt. copyright and things like patent applications are still somewhat unclear in many jurisdictions, the simplest solution is to stay well clear of any tool that claims to do anything "AI".
If the contract with the customer says "no AI because it exposes us to legal risks", then the work has to be done in a clean environment where there is nothing that could be considered AI.

While many linux distros are agnostic on LLM generated code; unsure they ought to be dictating the dev tools contributors use; or even developing policies on how to incorporate it into their projects responsibly.
Gentoo and ElementaryOS have banned LLM code from their project code entirely. (Though they can do nothing about upstream projects they consume.)
NetBSD has instituted a policy barring any LLM generated code from the entirety of its base system.
AND FreeBSD's draft policy appears to be similar.

Now that Apple's removed the ability for Preview to view PostScript files, what are folks using for that? I've got GIMP, but it's quite heavy-weight for the job of just viewing a file (and the mac version is super janky). What's the modern version of 'gv'?
@a The TeXshop document viewer seems to work ok, though I think it converts the ps to pdf for viewing.
@ori On macOS I used to do about 50/50 page/Preview, but page stopped working around the same time, throwing weird ghostscript errors. I think they're unrelated errors and maybe spending some time tracking down what's going on with that stack is worthwhile.
