This got asked in a FB group I'm a member of so I figured I might as well make an LJ post about my OTP history.

Before H/D there was H/L. I had gotten caught up with canon and was looking for more. Back then a major rumor for Book 6's title was "Harry Potter and the Pyramids of Furmat" and through heavy googling I read one fic of that title with a HP/LL pairing, that was my first taste of H/L. I was a Harry/Luna shipper for about 3 months, before then I didn't even know ficage even existed. A favorite author of mine was DrT who wrote fics that made up for wait for more canon. In one of her 'novels' there was the smallest of scenes where Harry (& co.) argue with Draco in the Great Hall just before Harry leaves Hogwarts. I think Draco only said a sentence or two before Harry tells him off and that's all there was of Draco in that series. Well, the scene stuck with me and nagged at me for weeks, placing the idea of Harry/Draco into my head. So I explored the wonderful world of H/D and never looked back. As for the first fic I read... I'm afraid I don't remember. I suspect it was "Irresistible Poison" because I think I wanted to read the most recced and popular one first. I'm the type to research a while before diving in so I knew all the fandom history before I even got involved.

That would make around the time I started reading HP fanfiction summer of 2003 and getting into H/D fall/winter of 2003. Which doesn't seem right in my head. I feel like I've been in it longer than 10 years... Maybe because I read so much that first year.

Whatever icon and signatures/banners I made for forums will go here. If you snag these let me know and remember to give me credit. Click on the images and download rather than right-click save as; the images shown are temporary JPGs and not high quality. I added border code so you can see the actual size of the images that have a transparent background.

Dear Santa...

Dear Santa,

This year I've been busy!

In August I ruled Duluth, Minnesota as a cruel and heartless dictator (-700 points). In October I put money in hangdab's expired parking meter (14 points). Last Sunday I stole girlofavalon's purse (-30 points). In March I signed my organ donor card (28 points). In July I ate my brussel sprouts (1 points).

Overall, I've been naughty (-687 points). For Christmas I deserve a spanking!

Sincerely,
Hidders

Time For Some Randomness!

What was your favorite movie when you were a kid? Is it still your favorite now that you're older?

The Little Mermaid. Ultimately, since it would then lead to a trail of Disney Princess movies in which I used to force people to call me the lead girl's name: Beauty and the Beast (Belle), Aladdin (Jasmine), and The Lion King (Nala). But most people remember the first time I said to call me "Ariel".

I don't really have a favorite movie anymore but TLM will always hold a special place in my heart.

Read or pass on this, it's just me ranting. If you comment to yell at me, don't expect a fight. I really don't care about the whole CC wank stuff since it's just an urban legend in the fandom now. And if you comment, feel free to give me something worth thinking about. I'd appreciate that. New views are loved.

Okay, so I've been reading up on some Cassandra Claire wank and found myself quite amused.

For one thing, I still haven't mastered the definition of 'wank' and all the ones I have read in fandom dictionaries just confuse me more. If someone could give me a clear, N00Bish description I would greatly appreciate it. Because I don't think it's what I think it is. I'm thinking it's 'people or events that give fandom a bad name'. That doesn't seem right.

I was around for all that belated buzz with CC. But I had just started into the fandom so I only heard snippets of what was going on, and I really hadn't cared at the time, I just wanted to read more fanfiction goodness. (I was such a hungry N00B.) Now that I'm reading up on it I can't help but wonder what I would have thought if I had cared back then.

I remember reading DT way back when it was on FA and by the second chapter I was forcing myself to read on. People loved this fic for a reason and I was determined to find out why. The series started getting stupider, more OOC, and I was getting confusted with it because I wasn't getting into it. It wasn't until the middle of DS that I realised that there would be no H/D action, except for a pillow fight and a side-story. I, of course, dropped the fic like a hot potatoe. I'm a devoted H/D'er, don't cha know.

I probably would have grinned and bared it if there was some Harry/Luna but that was before Luna came into the books. That was my first pairing, the pairing that brought me to fanfiction. But of course, after reading a very small argument scene in the Great Hall in one of Dr.T's works I was curious about H/D. I've never looked back. Or elsewhere.

But back to the whole CC mess, it's kinda funny. Stupid as all fuck but still humorious.

The key points that make me LOL are such:

Open The PointsCollapse )

Our fandom is really strange. I mean, when we see one of our own being plagiarized we eat the evil-doers.

Be it someone posting an old fic that's not online anymore and clearly stating they didn't write it, they just wanted to share a good fic that's not around anymore. Or the ones that post a fic that is still in rotation and claiming it's their own work. Or not addressing who really owns the fic.

But when we see published work being used we all get on one side of the fence and take sides. Personally I think the people who defend CC on the whole plagiarism thing was just because they liked the fic and hadn't wanted to see it gone. They didn't really understand how bad plagiarism is. Children get expelled from school and others get sued for it, of course it's a big no-no.

Overall, reading up on this was a fun factoid and a neat look into the HP fandom. It really is a fandom separate from all the others.

I'm happy to announce that I have joined the 2009 NaNoWriMo!

I'm a first-timer so I'm quite nervous. It also doesn't help that I have yet to finish any of my fanfic projects. But I won't let it bring me down. A month is a long time for someone who doesn't really do anything during the day, and 50k isn't so much either. I can do this!

I've no idea what I'm going to write about but I guess that's what I can use the rest of October for.

Is it strictly original work or can you use fanfiction?

Feel free to become my writing buddy, or follow my progress. Whatever floats your boat.

Yup, useless thing. I think most people cross post to InsaneJournal anyways, right? I just got one of those today just in case. In case of what, I don't know.

Welcome to the new year, that's actually the same as every other year before it. As you can tell I'm not much of a believer that with the new year comes big changes. Nope, to me it's just a number change that I tend to forget when writing checks.

Heh, moving on...

Did you know that Harry is Draco's 3rd or 4th cousin? Siriusly, look it up here!
Let me break it down for youCollapse )
