\u00bb Nasty brushes<\/strong>



Take this icon. Do you think I used a brush on the left top corner? I didn't :D

It's actually a capital letter Y, font Nasty<\/a>, size 120. Here's the part of the Y I used:



As you can see, it's almost impossible to know it's just a part of a giant letter. Since converting images to Gimp brushes is quite long and boring, I often use this trick to spare time and get custom \"brushes\" that nobody else has. You don't necessary have the time, the skills (or whatever reason) to make your own resources, but using letters as if they were brushes makes your icon look more personal, even if you use the same fonts that anyone else :)

For the moment, I only tried with Nasty, but actually there's no reason why it shouldn't work with other fonts that have sophisticated capital letters with lots of swirls, like Porcelain<\/a> for instance.

\u00bb Natural born killer<\/strong>

I took a black and white scan of Uchida<\/a>, cleaned it, colored it, added a light texture (other tutorials explain these steps very well: click<\/a>) and I got this:



Problem: there is an empty space on his left arm D: How to fill this space with text?

Even if you don't know what the whole picture looks like, maybe you can guess Uchida is moving quickly and killing people (if you noticed the speed lines, the katana in his hand and the little blood drops on the right of the icon). But it's not evident, so I chose the text \"Natural born killer\" because it's basically what Uchida is. Please, no text like \"speed of light\" or just \"killer\" because it's obvious +_+ I mean, it's like an icon of a happy person with a text that says \"joy\": it's just redundant and ridiculous :P



\u00bb The words are very close to each other to subtly convey the idea of speed that was partially lost with the cropping. It's as if Uchida shook the words with his superhuman speed.

\u00bb The font used to write B O R N and KILLER is Scrypticali<\/a>. I like this kind of fonts because they are stylish and<\/em> readable. And if you find one that nobody else uses, it will give a unique touch to your icon; in other words, it's the antithesis of a font like Carnevalee Freakshow<\/a>, that is stylish and practical too but makes icons all look the same :P

In capital letters and at a small\/medium size, these fonts are quite similar to classic serif fonts like Times New Roman or Century, still readable, but with a little touch of style. N A T U R A L is however written in Century, because at this tiny size Century is more easily readable than Scrypticali, and you can't notice the switch just by looking at the icon.

\u00bb The tiny text is here to blend the text better in the icon. I used SimHei size 3 (with all the options checked in Gimp) with a space between each letter randomly typed on the keyboard and an opacity of 55%. I always type my tiny text because this way I can make it perfectly fit the icon (if you're lazy like me, you can write a single line and then cut it, rotate it, duplicate it etc. to give the impression you wrote several different lines :P).

Tah-dah! You got a text with an exotic font, as well as a placement and a meaning that both fit the picture.

<\/a>sweetpasta<\/b><\/a><\/span> wanted to know how I used a texture in this icon. It's very simple ^^

I begun to work on my icon with the following picture and mask:

To fill the white space on the left, a brush would be fine but you forgot I'm extremely lazy :P I chose this texture by <\/a>arisubox<\/b><\/a><\/span> because its right part interested me:



Keeping only a part of a texture instead of using the whole one as a background makes it more difficult to know which texture you took (it's especially useful when you download resources created by popular people like <\/a>arisubox<\/b><\/a><\/span>, because a lot of people may use them too).

Since the colors of the texture don't fit at all the colors of the screencap, it had to be recolored. I desaturated the texture and created a new layer above, filled with a color picked from Takano's hair (#ead429<\/a><\/span> for instance). With this layer set to Lighten only<\/i> I got this:



Ugly, isn't it? :P But put on the icon (blending mode set to Normal) and moved to the left, it looked like this (I also put a layer filled with #f3e8b6<\/a><\/span> under the mask):



The rest of the steps were quite simple: fangirl<\/i> was written in Dyspepsia<\/a> because the shape of the \"f\" fitted the texture. I used the two colors of the texture to write it because only one of them looked plain, and it also made \"fan\" and \"girl\" stand out.
To finish the icon, an arrow brush by <\/a>colorfilter<\/b><\/a><\/span> and some tiny text lines to avoid the bottom part of the icon to be too empty (unlike <\/a>frakalakalaka<\/b><\/a><\/span>, I don't master emptiness :P). Here's the final result:

A few extra explanations on the last one:

\u00bb The diagonal lines on the texture were erased because they weren't needed.

\u00bb The font used is Twentieth Century MT Condensed. I love this font because its condensed look lets me type a lot of letters on the same line. Written in capital letters, text looks rectangular and fits the \"stripes\" I often use in my icon (in other words: be lazy and write on rectangles of color with this font, it will look the best :D). Since several layers of this icon are just rectangles of color set to Normal, I immediately chose it. The two tiny text lines intensify the presence of horizontal stripes and fill the space above asakusa<\/i>. Uppercase, lowercase and Japanese letters (to write \"Asakusa\") bring some variety while all words look similarly \"rigid\".

\u00bb I didn't rotated the base just to make my icon looks more original, but because the parts of the picture that were interesting to cover with text and textures were higher than large, and vertical text has its limits :P<\/a>

How to use it?<\/b>

\u00bb Paid accounts<\/b>
1.<\/b> Download the *.zip file and upload the images to your server or a Photobucket<\/a> account (Flock is your friend). DO NOT change the file names.

2.<\/b> Included in the *.zip file is a text file entitled mood_lenore.txt<\/i>. Open this text file up in your word processor. Do a find\/replace and replace every \"http:\/\/<\/b>your_address\/\" with the location of where you have hosted the image files.

3.<\/b> Go to the Livejournal Command Console<\/a>. In the box, enter this : moodtheme_create \"Lenore mood theme\" \"Lenore images\" and press execute.

4.<\/b> If you've done it correctly, you should get a message saying your mood theme has been created along with a mood theme ID. Write down the mood theme ID, you will need it for the next step.

5.<\/b> Go back to the mood_lenore.txt<\/i> file. Do a find\/replace \"your_number\" with the # that LJ assigned to your mood set.

6.<\/b> CTRL-A to select all the text in that file, then copy and paste it into the console box. Press \"execute.\" It should give you a long list of commands to show that you've been successful.

7.<\/b> To check if your mood theme has been set up correctly, go to http:\/\/w<\/b>ww.livejournal.com\/moodlist.bml?moodtheme=ID# -- but replace \"ID#\" with your theme's ID#. If it shows up, you know it worked
