Witness my predicament, my friends, as I shall relate it to you:
never has there been, neither in the past, nor in your lifetime,
A similar heart, ungoverned, without lord or king,
That threw me down a well, with broken stairs
Where, yearning to drown, I descend the steps of my downfall,
Climb back up, only to go down again in this sea of woe.
...

Il Cantilena, Pietrus (English Translation)

Anyone who is interested in being added as a friend, please comment here. I do not promise reciprocal adding (I don't expect it, either), because I want to restrict readership to people I know and trust ("knowing" and "trusting" defined according to arcane personal criteria). If I don't add you please don't consider that an insult... it just means that I don't feel I know you well enough. Also, I will not be adding people who I know in real life. Those people can find out about me the old-fashioned way... through conversation and observation.

ETA September 2006: Changed the default on this post to screen everything. Say anything private to you that you wish; I will keep your reply private unless explicitly given permission by you to do otherwise. Think of this as a value-added feature of this new improved friends-only post.

Shin-ah, aka Shina, aka Seiryuu, the Blue Dragon of Akatsuki no Yona [05 Mar 2015|02:34am]
So! Finally, here are the references for you, Kori!

But I am not content to just give references, I want to give a little backstory so that you can understand the character a bit better, for drawing purposes. First, here is the main reference, which comes at the end of his arc:

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 2.15.18 AM

So, the basic story of Akatsuki no Yona involves a legendary Red Dragon god, who incarnated as a human man thousands of years ago; his fellow dragon gods of various colors (White, Blue, Green, and Yellow) were concerned over their beloved brother becoming mortal, so lent their powers to various human warriors, endowing them with a portion of the god's own powers. In time, that legendary god died, and thousands of years later, one of his descendants, a young spoiled princess named Yona, becomes his reincarnated self. Yona grows up in relative luxury, but soon after she turns 16, tragedy befalls her; her childhood friend Soo-Won ends up killing her father, and she has to run away with her other childhood friend, Hak, in order to escape being assassinated herself. In the process, she ends up finding out her legendary destiny and goes on a quest to go find the descendants of the original dragon warriors. That is literally the briefest summary I could make of the basic premise. Anyway, onto Seiryuu, aka the Blue Dragon, aka Ten's beloved fave dragon warrior!

So, we meet the Blue dragon soon after Yona obtains the allegiance of the White dragon. That first encounter went very well, but the Blue Dragon has a much more troubled backstory…

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.16.23 AM

The Blue dragon is born into a village where it is believed that the dragon powers are cursed powers, and furthermore, as soon as a baby is born who manifests the new power, the old dragon (who is usually still alive and actually usually still a young man) instantly loses the dragon powers, and is destined to die soon afterwards.

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.04.38 AM

For Seiryuu, when he was born, his mother was actually so distraught to have given birth to a baby with the dragon curse that she ended up killing herself, so he was raised by Ao (the former Blue Dragon), a young man who had lost the particular dragon powers, was now going blind because of it (because the Blue dragon grants amazing eyesight and also the ability to freeze enemies where they stand with the power of his gaze), and who is angry and resentful because he had been shunned his whole life by the people of his village but who protected them anyway, and who is actively dying even as he raises baby Seiryuu. This makes Ao harsh and strict with Seiryuu.

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.06.04 AM

This is Ao. He has the same outfit as Seiryuu, and the same coloring, so he makes for a good reference, because he has similar looks but because he has lost his powers, he no longer wears the mask to cover up his eyes, and also he had a harsher and more commanding presence, which shows in his demeanor.

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.09.42 AM

Ao is super strict! But he is this way because he is kind-hearted and is trying to raise Seiryuu to survive and to fit in with the people of his village as best as he can, despite the fact that they shun him too. Baby!Seiryuu wants to make friends but Ao tells him that it is never going to happen. Ao eventually goes blind, and then breaks down:

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.13.47 AM

Soon afterwards, he dies. A baby Seiryuu uses his powers, ends up killing tons of men with the power of his eyes, and his entire village needs to relocate because of him and the move into the mountains, with Seiryuu literally living in a cave and spending most of his time in the dark and alone. It is, as you might guess, a super sad and tragic state for anyone to be in, but especially a sweet and kind-hearted and soft-spoken young dragon warrior who just only wants to have some friends. ;;;_____;;;; (Can you see the appeal??? Can you????? XD)

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.17.14 AM

He is the Blue Dragon. Here you can see his whole body and see him in his cave with his chipmunk/squirrel friend (his only friend) who he named Ao, after his dead protector/guardian.

So, of course, into this life of misery and isolation, Yona comes, looking for the dragon. The Village people are evasive and become actively hostile once they realize what Yona is looking for, but early on Yona and her friends are nominally welcomed into the caves. Yona becomes separated from her friends in the caves, and one of the villagers takes this opportunity to lead her deeper into the caves, presumably to kill her without her warrior friends interfering. But Seiyuu saves her!

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.01.11 AM

Another dark screen cap, because caves.

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.01.43 AM

At first he just takes her back to her friends, but then departs quickly upon sensing the White Dragon's aura; he doesn't really know anything about the legends of the dragons, but it doesn't matter, because his dragon soul recognizes his dragon brother and furthermore, he had one of those mystical moments of recognition where he realized Yona was Some Kind Of Special Important Person, even though he didn't understand why, and that feeling spilled over him in this oppressive feeling that made him flee back into the caves. Once Yona realizes he was the Blue Dragon (Kija, the White Dragon, tells her that it was him), she immediately goes after him, because she wants to ask him to join her.

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.26.34 AM

While he was busy angsting, Ao was busy being a chipmunk of limitless cuteness.

Yona goes to confront him!

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.29.27 AM

Seiyuu is immediately on the defensive and draws his sword, holding the tip up near Yona's throat; he holds himself steadily but his hand is faintly trembling.

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.26.47 AM

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.27.21 AM

(some nice outfit references!)

At first upon her questioning, he is moved.

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.29.54 AM

But quickly becomes more threatening when he realizes she wants to "borrow" (to him: use) his powers:

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.30.35 AM

But Yona is Okay with it. She feels safe around him even with a sword tip raised to her throat!

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.33.37 AM

He still won't go with her though, and Yona doesn't press the issue, and sadly turns away. She is not satisfied with leaving him:

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.34.44 AM

Fortunately, before she can leave completely, there is an earthquake (it happens because the village people started threatening the White Dragon, who was standing guard outside the entrance to the Blue Dragon's cave, and the White Dragon kinda low-key had to unleash his powers but oops that caused a minor avalanche inside, blocking them all inside the caves. THIS IS VERY CONVENIENT, OBVIOUSLY, BECAUSE THEN YONA IS TRAPPED IN THE PROXIMATE SPACE WITH THE BLUE DRAGON, WHO IS OBVIOUSLY GOING TO HAVE TO EMERGE FROM HIS DARK HOLE TO COME FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED, AND HELP OUT.

(Seriously, so many of the beats of this story are kinda predictable, in a fairy tail way, but it's so well told that it's just satisfying, you know???)

When he does emerge from his cave, one of the villagers freaks out upon seeing him, because the villagers are stupid and think that Seiryuu is going to do something horrible to them all for causing the earthquake. THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW HIM, DUDE. Anyway, the villager freaking out causes him to flail and that accidentally causes Seiyuu's dragon mask to be knocked off, and so finally everyone can finally see his bare face, and his eyes (which are described in-story as unsurpassedly beautiful):

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.42.07 AM

(his eyes are a kind of hazel-opal color, and I think the animators did a good job making them look supernaturally lovely here)

Closer…

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.42.27 AM

And here, in non-Yona vision:

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.43.20 AM

Because he is kind, he immediately closes his eyes…

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.43.57 AM

And starts helping Yona and everyone dig out of the blocked-in cave.

At some point Yona gets exhausted with digging, so he carries her back to his lil cave area and lends her his furry head covering as a kind of blanket, and Yona breaks down in tears, because she can see how kind he is and it makes her so sad to see him so misunderstood and alone:

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.49.06 AM

She declares she will save him!

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.50.40 AM

And he is very moved:

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.51.00 AM

And realizes he will go with her after all! That following his destiny in this case will also mean abandoning his own loneliness and sense of purposelessness and despair.

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.53.51 AM

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.52.24 AM

After they all dig themselves out of the cave-in, he formally agrees to go with her, tears in his eyes:

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.54.35 AM

As he leaves, the bells he was wearing this whole time (in remembrance of the original Ao; he wore them when Ao's blindness got to the point that he needed sound in order to know where Seiyuu was) fall off his mask, and he decides to leave them behind, as he goes off to his new destiny:

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.55.35 AM

Out under the sunlight at last, he and Ao stand under the dappled lights of the forest and enjoy their newfound freedom:

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.57.21 AM

Kija, the White Dragon, declares that they are now brothers and he will teach him ALLL about being a dragon warrior!

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.57.50 AM

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.58.12 AM

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 1.58.30 AM

And eventually, under the moonlight, Yona gives the previously nameless Seiryuu his new name, Shin-ah, which means "Moonlight."

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 2.06.17 AM

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 2.06.53 AM

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 2.08.41 AM

Like a cutie, he later wakes up Ao to formally inform Ao about his new name:

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 2.09.33 AM

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 2.09.50 AM

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 2.10.29 AM

And that is it, the condensed version of Shin-ah's backstory!

The following google image search should give you a decent amount of additional references if you need them: https://www.google.com/search?q=shin-ah+akatsuki+no+yona&client=safari&rls=en&biw=1920&bih=1002&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=nwX4VPzdIMmxyAS5koHgAw&sqi=2&ved=0CB0QsAQ

FIVE THINGS. [28 Aug 2011|02:21pm]
A meme from aflyingteapot!

Comment to this post asking for a list, and I will give you five things I associate with you. They might make sense or they might be totally random. Then post that list, with your commentary, to your LJ (or just add a reply back at me). Other people (including me~) can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

Lengthy responses under the cut! Topics: Haruna! Herons! Honey & Clover! Strange Working Hours! Introducing New Friends!Collapse )

NEXT, I will be addressing tomoe_daeva's five things. But before that, I have some fanfic I need to work on. So hold on Daeva... I have not forgotten! Just let me write some Akiharu fic first! Although you might want to pick something other than shogi since um... I actually don't know anything about shogi.

Surprise AkiHaru! [16 Aug 2011|07:56pm]
Dear flist (especially my dearest fellow AkiHaru lovers):

I have a super awesome treat for you! I almost don't even know how to introduce this properly, since I think this art is sooo awesome and it makes me sooo happy and is everything I could have dreamed of and more. But basically, shirono very graciously offered me three pages of doujin art as if on commission, as a gift in return for a small favor I did for her some time ago. I very much feel that the gift art here goes way beyond the value of the favor (which was helping her get some doujins she wanted, if you're curious-- I don't want anyone getting any suspicious ideas here! XD), so I kind of feel overwhelmed and super grateful and very, very happy. I've been really looking forward to sharing these with all of you.

I asked her to draw me some AkiHaru fanart. Specifically, I asked her to draw the makeout session Akimaru and Haruna have while on the train to Hokkaido, from the fic I am co-writing with todaythesamesky aka Sparklespiff.

Here are the results (links because the images are somewhat large):

- Page One
- Page Two
- Page Three

Even though I did absolutely no work on these images other than picking out what I wanted shirono to draw, I still want to say that these pics are basically a surprise present for todaythesamesky.

Monica, can you believe it's been almost a year since you first posted that drabble-drop meme? That story fills me with so many ~~feelings~~ it's hard for me to even process them! I never would have guessed when we first started that it would turn out to be such a long and epic story (of :Fail!), nor that it would turn out of be one of my favorite stories of all time, but I very much want to thank you for writing this story with me. These pictures are for you!

And shirono. Thank you so, so much for drawing this exceedingly sexy art, with such exceedingly sexy kisses.

And to everyone, Ten and Teap and Drae and Daeva in particular, who have been reading this story so faithfully and who have made writing it even more fun!!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENTARY, PARTISAN TOWARDS AKIMARU AS IT OFTEN IS!!! Akimaru needs as many friends as he can get!!!!!

♥ to you all!

Top 10 SF and Fantasy Novels? [03 Aug 2011|01:01am]
So, NPR is doing this thing where they are going to put together a "Top 100 Science Fiction and Fantasy Novels" list. Earlier they solicited nominations for potential titles, and now they are asking for people to vote: to vote, you are asked to check off your favorite ten (only ten!) titles and submit your ballot.

Of course there are a ton of classic titles on this list. I'm sure that there are going to be tons of people who vote on the titles based on all sorts of criteria, and it wouldn't surprise me if most people who vote end up dutifully picking books that are the most influential and classic from amongst the listed titles, such as 1984 by George Orwell or A Scanner Darkly by Philip K. Dick. And they wouldn't be wrong to do so: those are some great books.

But I've decided hell, dawg. I am going to vote for my hands-down favorites based purely on the books that brought me the most sheer enjoyment from reading them. I wasn't thinking about which books are the best written (although I think the books I picked are all very well written) or which ones are the most innovative (although several of my choices are very innovative) or which ones have the most cultural and social impact and somehow therefore deserve to be on the list (although... damn it, you get the idea).

No. No way. I'm too selfish and self-interested for that.

So here is my list of my ten favorite SF and Fantasy novels, from the list NPR provides, ranked in order of preference:

Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, Haruki Murakami
Cryptonomicon, Neal Stephenson
Wheel of Time series, Robert Jordan
The Lord of the Rings trilogy, J.R.R. Tolkien
The Last Unicorn, Peter S. Beagle
The Mists of Avalon, Marion Zimmer Bradley
Snow Crash, Neal Stephenson
Neuromancer, William Gibson
The Sandman series, Neal Gaiman
The Sparrow, Mary Doria Russell

And under cut, a brief description of my top five picks, along with a short explanation why I love that particular book so much.Collapse )

So, flist...go look at the NPR site. Vote! And tell me about your own top ten choices! I'd like to know what you personal picks are, and am especially interested in your reason for your top choice or choices. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU ALL LOVE.

cuz' i don't shine if you don't shine: an akiharu fst [22 Jun 2011|11:22pm]

This FST has been months in the making, with me auditioning out tons and tons of different songs for the maximum Akiharu celebration. Recently I purchased a boatload of music from iTunes, and a couple of those songs seemed good enough for the FST, finally rounding out the selection. So I went and got a hold of shareable MP3s and now I have an FST you all can download, for your ultimate Akiharu pleasure.

A full playlist can be found under the LJ-cut, along with select notes and a download link.Collapse )

Puella Magi Madoka Magica [review] [07 Mar 2011|12:44am]

"If you feel like dying for this universe, just call us. We'll be waiting!"

I don't think it's any exaggeration to say that this series has not only become my favourite anime series for this season, it will probably go on my top twenty list of anime series of all time. It's just that good, and that much of a head trip.

somewhat spoilery content under cut, as well as more pics and a music download from the showCollapse )

That's good too.

I love this series. I am fascinated by it. You all should give it a try.

Writing Retrospective, 2010 [01 Jan 2011|07:57pm]
So, I did this meme last year, and I really liked it because it helped me to wrap up the year in my head, and show me that I can be pretty prolific actually.

First, the census of what's what. This was the year of Oofuri.

1. What the Sibyl Said, chapter 2 revision. Unlike last year when I did this meme, I am going to count the words on this chapter this time, since the revision was a rather extensive re-write and I left very little of this chapter in its original form. 15,729 words. Complete (the chapter is, anyway).
2. Mischief Managed. Ken/Daisuke... omg, I don't even know what to call this story. It's not porn, but it's... kinky. 3,055 words. Complete.
3. Die Verwandlung. Sibyl sidestory. Ken/Daisuke porn. 8,577 words. Complete.
4. In Want of a Prime Directive, chapter 7. Starscream/Skyfire. 3,746 words. Ongoing, on hiatus.
5. You Will Not Fall. Mihashi/Abe. On hiatus while I work out my Haruna Issues. 35,291 words.
6. I Will Be Watching You, Always. YWNF sidestory, complete. This marks the beginning of my Haruna Issues and is therefore remarkable for that. 8,302 words. Complete.
7. Come Out And Play. The first truly Haruna-centric story, and the first time Akimaru really comes to the fore in my consciousness as someone I really wanted to write. Laughably, I thought this would get me over Haruna. 14,658 words. Complete.
8. Above You, Below Me. Haruna/Akimaru smut. God, this was probably the single most enjoyable story I wrote all year. It's full of stars porn. 11,565 words. Complete.
9. Make Me a Morning (co-written with todaythesamesky). This marks my complete surrender to all things Haruna. I don't even care any more. Current word count (only going with mine): 30,066 words. Ongoing.

Unpublished:

1. You Will Not Fall, chapter 7. 15,243 words (not counting redundancies).
2. The Living. Fucked up Osama/Ken fic. 3,034 words.
3. Trafficking. Rock/Revy vignette. 2,003 words.
4. Touch Her, Touch Her. Rock/Revy porn. 2,579 words.
5. Anonymous Yuletide fic. 1,265 words.

Total Word Count: 155,113 words.
... which roughly averages to about 3000 words per week.

And here is the survey!

My TLDR on writing, you have been warned.Collapse )

Dear Flist: Requesting Tai/Yamato fic reccs! [28 Sep 2010|12:12am]
One of my new Oofuri friends, shirono, has been watching Digimon recently, and one of her newfound interests is an interest in the most popular pairing in Digimon history: Taito.

Taito! Like, lol, I don't remember any fics for this pairing. Sooo flist-chan, I turn to you, for those of you who have been Digimon fans in your lifetime: are there any stories you might recommend for a newfound fan? She seems to be especially interested in fics that focus on the feelings that Tai has for Yamato, but any and all recommendations are welcomed. Hell, I kinda want to read some of these fics myself. PLEASE HELP.

ETA: okay, I remembered one. Gay Chicken, by Pyjamas. Nice and hot despite the ridiculous title (which actually has a reasonable explanation). XD

ETA 2: It... destroys me. OMG GOTH TK ILU ;;__;;;

My Harunaspiration! [11 Aug 2010|03:14am]
So, I'm just freakin' infatuated with Haruna right now. *points to icon* Look at him, isn't he hot? He's also an arrogant dick! And a genius baseball pitcher! What's not to love!

Anyway, was catching myself up on Jim Rome this evening, and from the top of the show he played highlights from a radio interview he did with Brian Wilson, the closer pitcher for the San Francisco Giants. And I was all ****stars in my eyes**** because, like, Brian Wilson IS Haruna: smart, and hilarious!

First off. Recently there was some Controversy with Brian Wilson, since he was wearing these really, really flashy orange Nikes while pitching in a game against the Marlins. The coach of the Marlins complained, he was fined $1000 for crimes against fashion, and when the coach of the Marlins called him out for wearing shoes that were too flashy, he gave the following response:

Too flashy. I didn't know that's in the rulebook. Oh it's not in the rulebook. The fact that he thinks these shoes throw 97 to 100 with cut might be a little far fetched. I guess we should have these checked as performance-enhancing shoes.

LOVE

In the end, to make them game compliant, he needed to cover up the orange with black for at least 50% of the shoe. Apparently he accomplished this using a Sharpie.

So, now, here are some choice quotes from today's Jim Rome, transcribed for you, in order to appreciate the awesome Brian Wilson. You don't need to know or like baseball to appreciate these quotes.

Here goes.

On what he was thinking when he decided to put on the orange cleats:
I'm not even magical. I'm just going to put these on and see what happens.

On the color orange, in general:
The other colors respect orange. I know, I hear them talking about it.

On mouthing off to the fans:
It's fun to bicker with the fans because after a while they're stumped. They'll think 'wow, This guy, this technician of the mouth, is firing back some sweet stuff at me. I don't know what to do. I'll throw peanuts at him. Wait, he's a ninja, he just caught those. I have nothing to say.'

On his work ethic:
See, the thing for me is, I don't know how much talent I've had over the coarse of my lifetime, if any. I always corellated it to, my dad told me to work as hard as you possibly can....I'm going to work as hard as I humanly possibly can. If that means I'm going to throw up before the game, then so be it. Because its going to make me a MAN when I come to the game.

Final words of wisdom:
When you're on the mound and you feel like you could absolutely murder someone's soul out there? Failure isn't an option.

HE COULD MURDER SOMEONE'S SOUL OUT THERE

I... I'm pretty sure I'm totally, totally in love...

time-wasting but entertaining Oofuri meme! [06 Aug 2010|01:24am]

Oh, GRRM. Why must you cantanker on so? [08 May 2010|04:18am]
Okay, so George R.R. Martin has written a post defending his decision to forbid fanfiction of his works. You can read it here.

Here is my reply. I posted it in the comments section of his post but will also reproduce it here, because it's two damn pages long and because I can.

Year 2000 flashback! Reposting of "Total Request Live," just for y'all [21 Mar 2010|01:59am]
Here's a Digimon "story" I wrote... a long, long time ago. It's an interesting relic in a lot of ways: it's a scriptfic, which was posted to ff.net before these were banned. I was such a huge dork back then. I pretty much totally love this story, and even if I didn't still love Digimon, I'd love it because it is a time capsule look-back for ten years ago, complete with all sorts of dated cultural references (remember when MTV used to actually play music?) and punkass insights, from back when I was a medical student living on my own in downtown Detroit... around the time I was getting to know anax.

The premise of the story is that the Digidestined were invited onto Carson Daly's TRL show on MTV. I was such a huge dork back then, but I kind of love this story specifically because even though it's soooo bad: it's bad in a such a hopefully hilarious way.

I doubt I'll ever formally re-publish this anywhere, but here it is for you, my dear flist. (feel free to shoot me later).

TK is dressed like someone out of N-Sync, and Davis is wearing sunglasses. Yolei is wearing a replica of the outfit that Britney Spear's made popular in 'Oops...I Did it Again,' a red vinyl jumpsuit and space-cadet hairstyle. Kari is wearing a yellow tee that says 'hikari,' with a picture of a panda on it. Cody is wearing a silver shirt, baggy pants, and a long chain attached to his pants. Ken trails after them, wearing his normal grey school uniform, like always.Collapse )

Slash and the appropriation/objectification of The Other [13 Jan 2010|11:31pm]
This post, on the topic of female slashers writing about gay men, really struck a chord with me. A kind of annoyed, exasperated chord. So I started writing up a response, and as it got longer and longer, I realized that the most appropriate place for me to post this was in my own journal. I don't post about my opinions as often as I should in my own journal: I should correct this.

++

When I write, I don't set out to subvert. Nor do I set out to appropriate anything. But I don't define myself simply as a woman. Most importantly, I define myself as me. And when I write, I want to write the things that appeal to me. Usually that means writing about gay men. Should I stop because some gay men don't approve? I don't know. Should gay men stop designing clothes for women? After all, a gay man who designs clothes for a body he will never have is not all that different from a woman who writes stories for a life she will never lead. So, should I stop?Collapse )

Goodbye, 2009, hello New Year!!! Here is my Writing Retrospective to kick you off!!! [02 Jan 2010|02:41am]
I've seen this meme kicking around a few places, but nekokoban and sink_or_swim really were the ones to inspire me to do it.

I have to say, the word count turned out to be a lot higher than I expected. Fickleness apparently pays off! This has been a year for just running around and chasing after whatever was interesting me at the moment, without any kind of greater plan. This is the most productive I've been in ages, but I make no promises as to my future output because every time I make promises I end up locking them up into refrigerators and putting chains around them and dumping them (the promises, I mean) down at the bottom of the ocean.

I am a fickle person, period. I must simply accept this, and keep moving!

the detailed statsCollapse )

Total: 104,065 words

And here is the survey!

My TLDR on writing, you have been warned.Collapse )

LET'S JOGRESS: Daiken Fic Recs [24 Dec 2009|01:49am]
I prepared this as a comment to an anonymous poster over at fandomsecrets, which came up in the discussion of Secret #110, a shocking secret from some Digimon fan who didn't like the 02 ending. (omg, who doesn't like that ending right???). Since I have been all Digimon focused lately, I was primed to create a fic recc list. I am reproducing it here because I want to have it handy for future reference.

and now, LET'S JOGRESS
++

Well, first some sweet fluff to cleanse the palate:

The Puddles Arc by Apple QB. This occurs just after Ken stops being the Kaizer and is at maximum emo mode. I just find it adorable.

Don't Lose Yourself, by Intrada. I really don't know how Daisuke gets away with being this clueless. Ken somehow copes.

The Lefthand Path by Irhista Lhail. This is a post-post Kaizer fic, mostly all lemony.

Onjin, by Jin. The first Daiken fic I ever read. It is perhaps a bit too pat and fluffy but I love it.

Renshuu, by Megan le Fay. Kissing just for practice.

No Rules For This, by kyuuketsukirui. Daisuke is a super dork, as per usual.

And now for some longer works!!

Fine Art, by Faded Jae. Tragically incomplete but excellent characterizations.

Ground Level, by Aphrael and Louise. This links to all of Aphrael’s fics, but Ground Level is an excellent longer AU fic and I highly recommend it. (“Whipped” is also a great choice, especially if you want explicit smut)

Recently I have become most taken with Strange, by Apple QB. This is another tragically unfinished story but it is still a WIP. It's fascinatingly subversive and, yes, strange.

The Walls Between, by Kinslayer. Full disclosure: Kin is my best friend. But this story is epic and wonderful and very, very tragic. He also wrote "The Mistakes We Make," which is also hosted at Mediaminer, and which is probably his most notorious story.

Yami, by Ainokitsune. Another friend of mine, another ridiculously sad story. TBH a bit too hard for me to read, because it is so sad, but it is amazingly well written.

I suppose I could also mention that I too write Digimon fanfic. Some people have called it good. You could try Reflections, which is not complete because I am in the middle of rewriting it. This one is miraculously not slated to be a tragedy. I am also in the process of revising What the Sibyl Said, and I think it's now better then ever. Go read it, I think it's awesome if I do say so myself.

Also: you may enjoy Courage and Kindness: the Daisuke/Ken ship manifesto. It's one fan's defense of the pairing.

I welcome any additional recommendations anyone would like to add. I didn't put up any fic by El Juno, or Vain, or Akira Ichijouji, or Nemesi mostly because I couldn't decide which fic to pick. I need to go back and read all of their stories and then I can edit this post later to make my most studied recs. But trust me, I love all of them too. (Links to at least one fic by each of these writers can be found in my "Favorite Stories" section on ff.net, if you want to browse through their stuff on your own). :)

Top 15 Anime OPs of All Time! [27 Jul 2009|03:30am]
Alright, so cephiedvariable did this, wonderfully, in her own LJ. It looked like a lot of fun so despite the fact that I knew some of my choices would be identical to hers, I decided I'd share my own personal picks for top anime opening sequences of all time.

Cool, right? Cool! Let's proceed!

fifteen You Tube embeds under cutCollapse )

And that's it. This list was a ton of fun to compose, and I hope to see this catch on as a meme because I would like to see everyone's choices. XD

How To Tell Someone They Sound Racist [30 Jun 2009|11:26am]
Yesterday on NPR there was a piece about Jay Smooth, video blogger at The Ill Doctrine. He is an extremely chill (and rather hot) rapper. NPR played an audio clip from the following blog entry, "How To Tell Someone They Sound Racist," and I thought it was just so totally awesome I needed to share.

NPR piece linked here.
