Mercy Otis Warren: The Forgotten Founding Mother and Her Profound Influence Upon the American Revolution

Mercy Otis Warren is one of the most influential historical figures during the colonial and revol... more Mercy Otis Warren is one of the most influential historical figures during the colonial and revolutionary eras in the United States of America. She coalesced her genius literary intellect with the increasing political tensions between the American colonies and Great Britain to make some of the earliest calls for American independence by disseminating patriotic publications which successfully defended the revolutionary ideals of freedom, appealing to ordinary colonial civilians and prominent leaders alike. Among her many profound achievements in forging the American nation include her political activism in bringing about the American Revolution via the anonymous publication of satirical and theatrical pamphlets denouncing the British Government's injustices against its colonies. One of Mercy's satirical works, The Defeat, was responsible for British Royal Governor Thomas Hutchinson's exile from America after she exposed his role in promoting the infringement of the American colonies' rights and liberties. Furthermore, after the American Revolutionary War, Mercy Otis Warren anonymously published Observations on the new Constitution, which historians believe was responsible for advocating the inclusion of the Bill of Rights in the U.S. Constitution. Unlike many of her contemporaries, Mercy despised slavery and spread awareness of the Native American genocide that occurred throughout American history. She was the epitome of an American patriot and visionary. Yet, her remarkable contributions generally remain unacknowledged due to her gender, as she published her works anonymously due to the deplorable manner in which women were disparaged and practically forbidden from being politically and governmentally involved. Accordingly, this research paper intends to spread awareness of Mercy Otis Warren's patriotic contributions and thoroughly investigates some of her most significant accomplishments during the American Revolution.
