Stefania Centrone's book provides an in-depth analysis and interpretation of Edmund Husserl's ear... more Stefania Centrone's book provides an in-depth analysis and interpretation of Edmund Husserl's early work, from the publication of the Philosophy of Arithmetic (1891) to that of the Logical Investigations (1900/1901). The book consists of three long chapters, respectively discussing Husserl's first book, the Philosophy of Arithmetic, the idea of pure logic in the Prolegomena, and the problem of the imaginary in mathematics, which was the topic of Husserl's 1901 ''Double Lecture'' for the mathematical society in Göttingen. Each chapter is followed by a number of article-length appendixes that focus in great detail on a specific issue or text, such as the definition of computable functions and Husserl's 1896 lectures on logic. Centrone focuses especially on what she considers to be Husserl's most ''original and surprisingly innovative'' contributions to the philosophy of logic and mathematics of his time:

Kap. II.1), entschied er, sein Leben der Philosophie zu widmen. Trotzdem hat er bis etwa 1902 eine Reihe detaillierter Werke im Gebiet der Mathematik geschrieben. Den grosten Teil dieser Zeit hat er in Halle verbracht, wo Cantor sein Kollege war. Im Jahr 1901 ist er nach Gottingen, dank Felix Klein und David Hilbert damals ein weltweit fuhrendes Forschungszentrum der Mathematik, umgezogen.

Drawing on his correspondence and other written sources, Mirja Hartimo details Husserl's knowledge of a wide range of perspectives on the foundations of mathematics, including those of Hilbert, Brouwer and Weyl, as well as his awareness of the new developments in the subject during the 1930s. Hartimo examines how Husserl's philosophical views responded to these changes, and offers a pluralistic and open-ended picture of Husserl's phenomenology of mathematics. Her study shows Husserl's phenomenology to be a method capable of both shedding light on and internally criticizing scientific practices and concepts.

Das Werk ist ein Ergebnis der Arbeit, die Husserl 1886 nach seinem Umzug von Wien nach Halle begonnen hatte, wo er seine Habilitationsschrift unter Carl Stumpfs Betreuung schreiben wollte (fur detaillierte Erlauterungen der Entstehung siehe Ierna 2005). Schon 1887 habilitierte Husserl sich mit der Schrift »Uber den Begriff der Zahl«, die nur als Teildruck unter dem Titel Uber den Begriff der Zahl. Psychologische Analysen (Heynemannsche Buchdruckerei, F. Beyer, 1887) veroffentlicht wurde, aber nie in den Buchhandel gelangte (vgl. Hua XII, xiiv; Ierna 2005).
