Couvrant une superficie de 501,1 km\u00b2, elle abrite une population de plus de 1,4 millions d\u2019habitants. Elle est compos\u00e9e de 5 arrondissements et de 97 quartiers administratifs.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"histoire-gwangju\">Histoire de Gwangju<\/h2>\n<p>Pendant la p\u00e9riode des <strong>Trois Royaumes<\/strong> (57 av. J.C &#8211; 668), Gwangju \u00e9tait sous le contr\u00f4le de Baekje et s\u2019appelait Mujinju. C&rsquo;\u00e9tait un centre militaire et commercial important en raison de sa position g\u00e9ographique.<\/p>\n<p>En 754, sous le r\u00e8gne du roi Gyeongdeok, Mujinju devint Muju. Puis, en 940, sous le r\u00e8gne du roi Taejo, Muju fut renomm\u00e9 Gwangju.<\/p>\n<h3>Le soul\u00e8vement de Gwangju<\/h3>\n<p>Des d\u00e9cennies plus tard, Gwangju devient le th\u00e9\u00e2tre d\u2019un \u00e9v\u00e9nement majeur dans <strong>l\u2019histoire moderne<\/strong> de la Cor\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>Suite \u00e0 l\u2019assassinat du pr\u00e9sident Park Chung-hee le <strong>26 octobre 1979<\/strong>, une loi martiale partielle est d\u00e9clar\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>Chun Doo-hwan, alors chef de la S\u00e9curit\u00e9 de la D\u00e9fense, profite de cette p\u00e9riode d\u2019instabilit\u00e9 politique pour consolider son pouvoir. Le <strong>12 d\u00e9cembre 1979<\/strong>, lui et ses partisans m\u00e8nent un coup d&rsquo;\u00c9tat militaire, marquant le d\u00e9but d\u2019une nouvelle p\u00e9riode de r\u00e9gime strict.<\/p>\n<p>La loi martiale est \u00e9tendue \u00e0 tout le pays le <strong>17 mai 1980<\/strong>, d\u00e9clenchant une vague importante de manifestations \u00e0 travers le pays.<\/p>\n<p>Le <strong>18 mai 1980<\/strong>, des \u00e9tudiants de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 National de Chonnam \u00e0 Gwangju commencent aussi \u00e0 manifester et sont violemment r\u00e9primand\u00e9s par des parachutistes. Cette r\u00e9pression entra\u00eene alors des actes de r\u00e9sistance civile.<\/p>\n<p>Le <strong>21 mai 1980<\/strong>, la violence escalade et les militaires ouvrent le feu sur la foule, causant de nombreux morts et blessant des centaines de personnes.<\/p>\n<p>Une attaque massive des troupes militaires est lanc\u00e9e le <strong>27 mai 1980<\/strong> pour reprendre le contr\u00f4le de Gwangju. On d\u00e9nombre 166 morts parmi les civils. Ce tragique \u00e9v\u00e9nement marque la fin du soul\u00e8vement.<\/p>\n<p>Chun Doo-hwan a quant \u00e0 lui \u00e9t\u00e9 condamn\u00e9 en prison et apr\u00e8s avoir purg\u00e9 environ deux ans de prison, il est graci\u00e9 en d\u00e9cembre 1997.
