Well, to start with, in May I got an AA in English!!!! This may not seem like a lot but I'm the first person in my family to ever get a college degree so it's HUGE! I'm still in school, trucking along to more knowledge, so that's great too.

Sadly, in June my grandfather died. It was all just horrible in general so I didn't really want to talk about it on LJ. I mentioned it on twitter and facebook, but it wasn't something I really talked about. On March 1st he got admitted to the local hospital after fainting and they found he had a urinary tract infection. However, they also discovered that his heart had some blockages and the tumor on his pituitary gland had returned (He had it removed in the 70s). The tumor wasn't a big deal really, because it was just a thing that was there, probably not a problem. His heart, however, was an issue. Well, they transferred him to The Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon and about 2 weeks later (he had some blood pressure drops and spikes since he was 77 and a diabetic and in the hospital about to have surgery so they had to wait) he had open heart surgery and a quadruple bypass. A routine surgery that went well, he was totally fine afterwards, no big deal. Then the day they were going to release him to go home, they came in and he wouldn't wake up. Without them knowing, he'd developed an infection. However, they never could FIND the infection. He was in a coma for almost a week and they never found WHAT was infected, they never found what KIND of infection, they just pumped him full of antibiotics and it helped. However, when he woke up, it was clear he'd suffered some brain damage. Nothing serious, he just kind of behaved like someone who had a minor stroke would. He was able to talk and use both sides of his body, but you could tell he wasn't 'all him'. He forgot stuff and would forget when the last time he saw someone was, and he'd think he was told things that he wasn't. It was really bad. Well, he'd get better, then get worse, then get sick again, then get better, then get sick, and it kept on and on until the end of May they sent him home to the hospital here. He was there for a week before he was sent to a nursing home. He was only in the nursing home for a week before they realized the tumor was why he wasn't getting better (something about his adrenal gland wasn't producing correctly) and when they did another check-up of his heart, they realize that being bedridden for three months had basically undid any good the surgery did. He ended up passing away at the nursing home a week later.

So yeah, it was bad. I mean, so bad that we were all really totally okay that he died. You know it was bad when I woke up to the phone ringing and when my dad said \"Pa died\" I was actually relieved. Without fail, it cemented my desire to absolutely never end up suffering for months like that. If I'm ever in a situation like he was in, I want to sign a DNR. I really do. He did but only after he woke up from the coma with brain damage. He was on full life support for the first few days in the coma because he hadn't signed a DNR and he DID wake up, but still. I never want that. Never. Not for myself. Everybody can pick their own way, but watching him suffer for OVER 100 days was just... no. Not me if I can help it. Nana dying 2 years ago was hard, you mostly all remember that, but I'd much rather it be less than a week from 'admitted to hospital' to 'died'.

So, apart from the 'now none of us have grandparents' thing (Nana and Pa were the only grandparents my siblings or my cousin had. I do worry about my sister being almost 10 and having no grandparents because they still do grandparents day in elementary school and she's only in 4th grade), 2013 has been AMAZING!

Getting the sad out of the way, like I mentioned, DEGREE! Also in June, pre-sadness, I SAW FALL OUT BOY! I know I posted a post about that (didn't I?) but AHHHHH! FALL OUT BOY! The concert was amazing! The venue was amazing, the show was amazing, the OPENER was amazing, and then afterwards I got to take a picture with Patrick Stump! SQUEE! Then the rest of my summer was spent planning for... DRAGON*CON!!!

Okay I'll be honest. Dragon*Con was way more of an undertaking than ANY of us planned on. Like... I would recommend Dragon*Con, sure, but I'm not doing it again. Not anytime soon at least. It was AMAZING fun, the cosplays were the best part (besides finally getting to meet one of my longtime internet friends in real life!), but dude... there is nothing to describe how exhausting and painful of an experience this was. I cannot find words. Okay, any of you do theatre? You know how bad Hell Week is? FUCK HELL WEEK! Okay, we were people who (between us, not all of us) do theatre, are college kids, work a 'standing for 7 hours straight' jobs, and one who works at an AMUSEMENT PARK running RIDES all day. We are not wimps by any means! And JESUS CHRIST it killed us. It killed us dead. We were like... murdered by Dragon*Con.

The first thing that went wrong: We thought 'oh, we'll stay up and only sleep about three hours the first night, we're college kids, we're good at this!' since we got to Atlanta thursday and DragonCon started Friday... BIG mistake! Second mistake: We should've pre-registered Thursday night! First thing Friday morning what did we do? Stood in line for TWO HOURS circling around the Sheraton to get registered. Let me tell you this, dudes. Standing is WAY more exhausting than walking. Standing in lines is like foot and ankle kryptonite. Working at an amusement park or at a Starbucks, you are on your feet for 7 hours, but you walk around while doing it. Standing? NOT GOOD! So first thing in the morning, we were already suffering sore feet. Terrible start. Well, basically the entire fucking weekend is standing in lines. It's lines and crowds. We were prepared for CROWDS but dude... there is CROWDS and then there is 'having to wait in a line for 10 minutes to use the stairs since the escalator lines are 20 minutes long'.

Never have I seen a HOTEL full of people so packed in that it's like being in the pit at a concert, only you're all moving trying to get somewhere at a shuffle. It was oppressive and horrible. I heard rumors that the problem is the projected attendance was about 60k this year and the turnout was like somewhere around 80k-100k (no official numbers, just rumors), so I get it, but GOD. It was horrific. I'm not a claustrophobic person but being trapped in a giant mass of bodies like being at the barrier of a concert was just... not cool. Not at all. And it was basically that way EVERYWHERE.

I'll post a full post on Dragon*Con when I eventually get around to editing together my documentary I filmed (aka, shaky shitty handheld cam vids edited together to show the story, lmao) and the rest of the pics uploaded.

But yeah, it got to the point that on Sunday and Monday (the last 2 days)we skipped the night parties and we said 'fuck it' to panels we wanted to go to that started before noon and slept from like 2-11 just because we were SO tired and in SO MUCH pain. I took more pain pills that weekend (I should've bought stock in the OTC acetaminophen\/ibuprofen companies)it was crazy.

So yeah, next year our plans are NYCC since Amber and Angela are FROM NY and they've been to NYCC and it's better organized so that crowding isn't an issue, even though there are WAY more people to attend. ALSO! ATLANTA IS AN EXPENSIVE ASS CITY! Even the two from NYC were all \"oh. My. God!\" at the price of just stuff. I SAW A FUCKING $4.75 BOTTLE OF WATER! WATER! I've seen water that much at CONCERTS because they jack up the prices, but DUDE! This was in a DRUG STORE! Holy shit, we had burgers and potato chips for lunch at this one place and our bill for 3 people was $60! And PARKING! We spent about $40 a day in parking alone!

Anyhow, that's the 'things so far'! Some great movies have come out this year, I'm taking the BEST class this semester now that I've started taking junior level english classes for my bachelors degree (omfg Special Topics in the American Gothic, HOW COOL IS THAT?!) and I'm doing WELL in Spanish for once (I made my first A on a test in the history of my courses for my Spanish degree!!!) and right now, things are going GREAT! Amber and I were worried it would be weird to be together in person after years online, but we actually got along SO WELL and it was SO NATURAL that we miss each other all of the time now, lmao. SO we've planned two trips next year! She's bringing Angela down here again and we're going to Savannah for her birthday in June and then in October I'm going up there to them for NYCC.

Sooo yeah! That's my 2013 so far. HOPEFULLY it only gets better because tons of good movies came out and still are going to come out in 2013 and SO MANY TV SHOWS!

OH!

Yes, tv shows! Okay so this fall, starting in the first week of October (full week), I'm going to have SEVEN SHOWS A WEEK to watch! I usually have like 3! Already started are an old favorite, Top Gear USA, and A NEW FAVORITE, SLEEPY HOLLOW!

DID YOU GUYS WATCH SLEEPY HOLLOW?! OH MY GOD IT'S SO GOOD! Wow, so excited for Monday nights now!

My week once all the shows get going is going to look like Sleepy Hollow on Mondays, Agents of SHIELD and Supernatural on Tuesdays (And TGUSA but I'll have to DVR it cause the others have to be seen live!), Arrow and Ghost Hunters on Wednesdays, and Elementary on Thursdays!

Speaking of Arrow! Okay so last year when it came on, it looked really lame in the commercials, right? Well Amber started watching it because of John Barrowman and she went 'WOW YOU HAVE TO WATCH THIS!\" and I did and HOLY SHIT! Dude! THAT SHOW IS AMAZING! The marketing department failed at life last year, because I'm more excited for Arrow to come back than Supernatural! That is how good it is and how HORRIBLE the cliffhanger was! ASLDKFjk;alfj;lds TOMMY! ARE YOU ALIVE TOMMY?! AHHHHHH!

Also, it ends next week on BBCA but have any of you watched Broadchurch? WOW this show is GOOD! I'm watching it on BBCA because I almost like the psycho anticipation you get at the end of each week, but GOD! This show is the BEST crime\/mystery show I've EVER watched. Every time you think you're gonna get an answer, you just get 50 new questions. SOOOOOO GOOOD! I'm dying to know who did it (NOBODY TELL ME! NO SPOILERS!)

Okay so I\u2019ll be brief mostly: Melissa McCall is IN-FUCKING-CREDIBLE! Stiles is still the greatest part of the show. Isaac is freaking adorable and I want to keep him. I really do think Ethan cares more about Danny than he was ever supposed to and I think that\u2019s going to end up being a problem with his pack and I still hope the twins turn good cause they\u2019re children and I still hate to see children die.

CONS: The Scott and Allison scene in the closet was so fucking pointless oh my God WHY?! WHY?! You threw that shit in there and RUINED THE GREAT EPISODE flow! I don\u2019t have a problem with them, I get that they\u2019re a big plot line, but GOD that didn\u2019t FIT! It was UNNECESSARY!

Also, I really fucking hate this \u2018true alpha\u2019 crap. I\u2019ve liked Scott better this season but I do not agree at all with the \u2018strength of character\u2019 bullshit. Until this season Scott has been a selfish, whiny little bitch. I\u2019d buy it more with a \u2018this is a new thing\u2019 but people going \u201cOh I saw it in you from the start\" \u2026 no. Just no. I see what\u2019s going to happen, they\u2019re going to use it even MORE to make Derek seem weak and useless and I\u2019m SO SICK of hurting Derek! WELL in the end, since my sister is the only one who WANTS to go with me and she's only 12 so my parents SURE AS HELL weren't going to let us go alone, my whole family decided to do a like... mini-vacation. The kids have never been to Atlanta, Dallas doesn't even remember the ONE time they've stayed in a hotel before, and my parents decided 'fuck it, we'll all go!' so we're going Sunday, eating lunch, going to the World of Coca Cola (I LOVED that place as a kid), then Graysie and I are going to the concert while the others go shopping and out to eat or something (probably swim in the pool at the, honestly) and then go home the next day.

HERE'S THE SUPER AWESOME BIT! (well no all of its but whatever) THE HOTEL IS ONE OF THE DRAGON*CON HOTELS! I can get a feel for the downtown area while we're there! The Hyatt Regency is only 3 blocks from the World of Coca Cola and only like 5 blocks from The Tabernacle (concert venue) and I'm gonna try to talk my parents into letting us walk (if my dad has to walk WITH us to the Tabernacle then walk back to get us, so be it, I wanna get a feel for the walking situation since we're going to walk exclusively for Dragon*Con after we park the car) but I'm kinda doubtful. Like I said, they didn't want us to go to Atlanta alone (I'm 22 and she's 12), I HIGHLY doubt they'd let us walk around downtown Atlanta at night alone, lol.

NOT that I blame them. I wouldn't want to walk around alone. With my sister I'm not so worried (she's 12 but she's also like 5'8\" and big, way less likely someone will try to mug the two tall, large girls, lol) but there's no way in hell I'd walk around by myself at night there. That's just ASKING to get held up and your stuff stolen. (Unless you're my deranged friend Amber who thinks I'm a pussy for not wanting to walk alone at night in a city since she's jaded from a lifetime of living in NYC)

Cause I'm SICK of certain of my fic fandoms having alpha\/omega fics EVERY OTHER FIC POSTED GODDAMIT! I really also hate certain super popular pairings. I'm tired of searching the pairings I like in Avengers\/MCU fics and finding them as either background to Steve\/Tony or with Steve\/Tony in the background. I HATE Steve\/Tony. It's the most illogical pairing. I don't see ANY grounds for it. I don't LIKE it. I don't READ it. I hate it even being in the background because it makes me turn my nose up at the fic that I might otherwise like. It would be great to just be able to blacklist that pairing so that I don't have to fish through the 500 Stony fics to find the ones I DO want to read that are tagged under my pairing tag.

Also, in certain fandoms, incest is common and I REALLY FUCKING DO NOT WANT TO READ INCEST FICS EVER I DONT EVEN WANT TO READ THE SUMMARIES THAT IS LIKE MY #1 SQUICK OH MY GOD WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?!?!?!?! sdkjafjskdf;asldfjkldsf so yeah, permanently blacktagging incest would be GREAT!

So yeah... anybody involved with AO3 planning, I know it's gonna be a while before an upgrade, but a blacklist option? The BIGGEST problem is that I can't get it on by myself. The hooks in the front are IMPOSSIBLE! Basically, when you do one, the next one comes undone. I had to loosen it so that I could slide it on over my head and then have my sister re-do the ties in the back since I couldn't pull them myself. I'm going to have to get a friend to help me get dressed in it *sigh*. BUT hey, for a $30 corset, it's pretty great realistically.

Lmao it's actually super comfortable. After I took it off, my boobs felt super heavy again. It helps SO MUCH to take the weight of them off my back. It isn't that tight (in fact, when I stand tall and suck in, the laces in the back are loose) and it's plastic boning, not metal like you wear to make your waist smaller, so it's moveable and comfortable. Definitely like! I just need to fix the 'boobs showing' part. I may buy a gold tubetop to wear under it if I have to, or I may just line the inside of the top with the same fabric as my tail, not sure. We'll see! Emphasis on ALBUM!

Save Rock and Roll is one of those albums that fits so well. I'm a big stickler for an album to be not a collection of songs, but to flow and work in the order the songs come in. Sure, after a while I put all the songs on my itunes on shuffle and rarely two play by the same artist back to back, but when it comes to first having an album, I listen to it from track 1 to the last track in order without skipping a good 20 times because albums are MEANT to be listened to like that.

In a good album, even the songs you don't love fit perfectly in the space they're in. They still work with the flow of song to song. It works with the mood shifts and the transformation through songs. And Save Rock and Roll really does that.

SO my question to YOU all is:


If you had to pick an album (or a few if you just CANT pick one), from any time in history, that you think is the best album, what would your choice be?

Anybody that really knows me knows mine! Artwork by The Used. It is my gold standard for albums. It was MINDBLOWING! From the opening 30 foot plunge feet first into chaos that is Blood On My Hands all the way through each and every song until the POSITIVELY EARGASMIC 'epic' song that is Men Are All The Same (If you don't know it, it's one of those songs that just feels SO intense and extreme it makes you feel like it should be the climactic moment in some insane action film where the hero is beating the fuck out of EVERYBODY. It's just indescribably good), every single song in that album transitions absolutely flawlessly and is positioned in the lineup as precisely as the circuits in a motherboard. With the exception of TRUE pop music, every album I listen to is basically judged on a scale of 'one to Artwork'.

To start, let me just get it out of the way: FALL OUT BOY IS BAAAAACKKKKKK! *flails* Woooooooo!

Okay, I've been waiting for that moment for SO LONG. You don't even understand my excitement at laying hands on my preorder package and knowing there was a brand new Fall Out Boy album inside it. It's been more than four years since the last time I opened a Fall Out Boy CD and I honestly never thought I would again. Fall Out Boy has been a part of my life since 2003. Ten of the most formative years of a person's life have all been under the influence of this band, that's how important they are to me. The morning they announced a new album and a comback all in one, I went to school floating on a cloud (Statistics at 11am was actually NOT bad for once) because FALL OUT BOY WAS BACK! Since then I have listened to the whole album on SoundCloud, but you all know (or maybe you dont?) my album review method:

1. Listen without any lyric booklet or anything
2. Listen while reading words
3. Listen while writing review

I admit I did number 1 about 6 times already, but now I am finally ready to do my song by song review! If you are new to my album reviews, I do one for every album I buy (or albums someone requests) and... well basically that means 2 a year, lol. My bands don't put out a lot of music. SO this is the first of 2013!

Let's begin!

Songs:
1. The Phoenix: Right from the start, this song's catchy phrase, \"Put on your war paint!\" draws you in and gets you going! You feel the hard, driving beat and you know you're in for a HELL of a ride! This song is the perfect first song because it tells you, \"Buckle up, motherfuckers!\" and then you're off through classic Fall Out Boy lyrics (cross walks and crossed hearts and hopes-to-dies) and you KNOW by the end of the song that YES! Fall Out Boy is BACK... with a vengeance!
2. My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light 'Em Up): Rightfully chosen as the first single (It's one of the catchiest songs on the album that isn't mellow), My Songs is dark, driving, and has one of the simplest Fall Out Boy choruses ever but it WORKS! The bass drives this song. It may be simple, but it's always there. It's this thunderous rumbling that you feel with your entire body. The soaring vocals, intense drums, and contrasting guitar is all held together by this driving bassline that you feel from your head to your toes. Great song!
3. Alone Together: To have an album that sounds so different than 'classic Fall Out Boy' this song is a textbook example of a Fall Out Boy song. It's got an upbeat, peppy beat with somewhat-bright music. However, the lyrics are deceptively kind of sad (\"My heart is like a stallion\/ they love it more when it's broke in\"). This is the formula for SO MANY Fall Out Boy songs. I'll be honest, it gets kind of repetitive after a while, but it's a great transition song from two angry\/driven songs into one with a lighter feel.
4. Where Did The Party Go: This song isn't as good as the first three, I'll admit. However, it gives a pretty nice selection of Patrick's vocals (from the highs in the chorus to the delightfully low, \"And your naked magic Oh dear Lord\".) It's catchy almost to distraction, but you can't help but want to dance. It's definitely a toe-tapper, that's for sure.
5. Just One Yesterday: I absolutely adore<\/i> Patrick's soulful voice! To be such a small man, he has so much 'large church lady' in him. This song also features a pretty great, driving beat. It's just not as overwhelming as the first couple of songs. Also, this song features Foxes, who I had never heard of before. This woman's voice is bbeautiful andit mixes SO PERFECTLY with Patrick's in this song. I absolutely love her bridge and backing vocals. This is a good, solid mid-album song.
6. The Mighty Fall: I'll admit, the first time I heard this song, while I LOVED the music, I wasn't a fan of the vocals having that rough texturing. It fits the song but I just wasn't a fan. However, after several listens, I kind of like it I think. I LOVE the chorus. This is angry. No two ways about it, it's bitter, angry, and spiteful. The drums throb<\/i> in your chest and you cannot not not your head. I'll be honest, I like the IDEA of a rap part. I really wish I liked it because it fits this song so perfectly. However, this person (the booklet tells me it's someone called Big Sean) just doesn't follow the beat well and I just don't feel it adds to the song at all. I wish there was a better rap put in and then it would be an AMAZING song.
7. Miss Missing You: Automatically, you can't not notice the synth giving the song an 80s feel. This is another song that gets a little repetitive, but it's so catchy<\/i> you can't dislike that repetitiveness as much as you probably want to. It has a good feel. The lyrics are about moving on and the music really fits that. It is a good song to come after The Mighty Fall, I think. However, I'm not sure it fits as well leading into the next song.
8. Death Valley: Right off the bat, this song screams 'Rock song'. The guitar has a very Jack White feel and, as a Jack White fan, I really dig it. Patrick's vocals are FUCKING AMAZING in this song. Then the unexpected semi-dubstep moment is actually not annoying like it could be and REALLY gives to the song. This is easily one of my very favorite songs Fall Out Boy has ever done.
9. Young Volcanoes: I don't really get this song. The beat is very 'Sunny California' and the vocals and music go well together, but there's just something that doesn't feel right. It's not a BAD song by any means. The only thing I really DISLIKE is how much \"We will teach you how to make boys next door out of assholes\" really DOES NOT fit the song. At all. It sticks out like a sore thumb. The song on the whole is alright. However, shockingly, it's placement in the album is pretty much great. Putting this between Death Valley and the next song works out pretty well. Not a fan of the song but a big fan of the song placement.
10.Rat A Tat: Absolutely hate the Courtney Love intro. Just hate it. HOWEVER, once you get past that beginning, the other parts she has aren't so bad. The song itself is REALLY good. The beat, the bassline, the vocals, the lyrics, every single note of the music is AMAZING! I wish the intro was gone and this would be basically a perfect song. But in the end, it's REALLY good.
11.Save Rock and Roll: This song. Just... From the first drums and clapping to the beautiful piano intro, this song is just- pardon the pun- music to my ears. The music is beautiful. Just plain beautiful. Every note is beautiful. The vocals are amazing, the song is incredible feeling and perfect to sing. And ELTON JOHN! Oh my GOD! Elton John and Patrick Stump were MADE to sing together. I've never heard Patrick sound better with anyone singing with him. Ever. This was the perfect song for Elton John to sing on as well because he just fits it so well. This is THE most amazing final song on an album since Men Are All The Same. This song made me tear up the first time I heard it. It's absolutely one of my top 5 favorite Fall Out Boy songs I've ever heard from them and that's saying A LOT. This song is the perfect ending to an INCREDIBLE comeback album!

When it's all said and done, this is a MAJOR album. Seriously amazing comeback.

On my scale of 1-10, I rate it:

I know that's a kind of random number at first glance, but this album isn't rated like my pop albums, this album is rated on a general 'one to Artwork' album. (Artwork by The Used was given my highest rating so far, a 9.9999) Comparitively, Folie a Deux had a 6.5, if you remember, so this is a BIG step up!

The ONLY reason it doesn't rate a 9 is there were several songs that had elements that took away from the song as a whole. I got the most RANDOM idea one day. I was driving along, listening to my usual old-rock station, when an old bluesy rock song came on and FOR SOME REASON I had a mental picture of Tommy playing guitar in a smokey blues club. My mind raced- why was Tommy there? oooh where was 'there'?! OH an old timey blues club! OH Tommy's parents own it- TOMMY'S THE ADOPTED SON OF A BLACK FAMILY WHO OWN A BLUES CLUB!

By the time I got home, I had this idea buzzing around. I set to researching. I spent a good 8 hours researching and working out a plot. A mesmerizing 15 days later, this was done. It's been at the beta longer than I ever expected to be so I've been spamming the HELL out of my friends on twitter and livejournal with teasers. I got it from the beta this afternoon, I texted my friend Tori that it was back, she AUTOMATICALLY made me the AMAZING art you see here, and I did my final revisions when I got home tonight. I was listening to the radio and I listen to either the local classic rock station or (when it randomly stops working for hours at a time, no this isn't unusual) a rock station out of a city about 50 miles from here. The song that I was singing along to was \"Pride and Joy\" by Stevie Ray Vaughan and I was thinking (yes while singing) about how much I fucking LOVE blues guitar and then BOOM!

I was hit with the mental image of TommyJoe Ratliff playing a guitar in an old, smokey blues joint then suddenly I was like 'oh, that's a good idea, a fic where Tommy is the adopted white son of a black family that deals with all the issues of his peers at work thinking he's a racist like them!' .... then by the time I got home I'd worked out this entire story set in the summer of 1964 where Tommy is what I described above- mother found an abandoned baby and kept him and he grew up in a black family at a time when there wasn't segregation where he lived (california) but a lot of racism was still there and being just as 'lily white' as racist establishments, people always assume he's just as much of a dick as they are and he's been getting in trouble his whole life because of this deep-seated anger at people who treat his family like shit cause they're black.

Only in order to add in the beloved slash part, he meets Adam- a college student anti-war protesting, sexual liberation minded, OPENLY (well, okay 'openly'ish) gay man when they end up thrown in the same cell after getting arrested at seperate incidents. The fic follows them from the day after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is passed as they have this life-changing, mind-opening summer romance. I won't say what happens or how it ends (OBVIOUSLY! You have to read it!) but I've spent basically all my free time the last TWO DAYS doing research for this, right down to learning what Draft Cards looked like (protests often included college kids burning theirs so I HAD to know) and making myself a playlist of songs that are bluesy and\/or are atmospheric to the Vietnam War (for example, one of the songs is \"Fortunate Son\" by Creedence Clearwater Revival) even if only 2 of the songs on my (admittedly short) playlist existed yet in 1964.
