Is there really something genuinely new about today's isms? Have we moved past our traditional ideological landscape? This book traces ideology's remarkable journey from Count Destutt de Tracy's Enlightenment ‘science of ideas’ to President George W. Bush's ‘imperial globalism’. Rejecting futile attempts to ‘update’ modern political belief systems by adorning them with prefixes, the book offers instead an explanation for their novelty: their increasing ability to articulate deep-seated understandings of community in global rather than national terms. This growing awareness of globality fuels the visions of social elites who reside in the privileged spaces of our global cities. It erupts in the hopes and demands of migrants who traverse national boundaries in search of their piece of the global promise. Stoked by cross-cultural encounters, technological change, and scientific innovation, the rising global imaginary has destabilised the grand political ideologies codified during the national age. The national is slowly losing its grip on people's minds, but the global has not yet ascended to the commanding heights once occupied by its predecessor. Still, the first rays of the rising global imaginary have provided enough light to capture the contours of a profoundly altered ideological landscape. Pointing in this direction, the book ends with an interpretation of the apparent convergence of ideology and religion in the dawning global age — a broad phenomenon that extends beyond the obvious cases of Christian fundamentalism and Islamic jihadism

This article argues that proliferation of prefixes like ‘neo’ and ‘post’ that adorn conventional ... more This article argues that proliferation of prefixes like ‘neo’ and ‘post’ that adorn conventional ‘isms’ have cast a long shadow on the contemporary relevance of traditional political ideologies. Suggesting that there is, indeed, something new about today’s political belief systems, the essay draws on the concept of ‘social imaginaries’ to make sense of the changing nature of the contemporary ideological landscape. The core thesis presented here is that today’s ideologies are increasingly translating the rising global imaginary into competing political programs and agendas. But these subjective dynamics of denationalization at the heart of globalization have not yet dispensed with the declining national imaginary. The twenty-first century promises to be an ideational interregnum in which both the global and national stimulate people’s deep-seated understandings of community. Economic globalization refers to the intensification and stretching of economic connections acros... more Economic globalization refers to the intensification and stretching of economic connections across the globe. ‘The economic dimension of globalization’ gives a brief history of the emergence of the global economic order. Towards the end of the Second World War, the Bretton Woods Conference laid the foundations for institutions such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and World Trade Organization. In the 1980s, rising neoliberalism led to the deregulation of financial transactions. Significant developments include the internationalization of trade, the increasing power of transnational corporations, and the enhanced role of international economic institutions. We have recently experienced setbacks like the 2007–10 recession and the slowdown of the Chinese economy.

Since the arrival of the “unipolar moment” following the fall of the “Evil Empire” in 1991, the term has been usually associated with the United States and its expanding sphere of influence. One notable exception, of course, is Michael Hardt’s and Antonio Negri’s much publicized perspective on Empire as a radically new paradigm of authority and control that cannot be reduced to American power—a “new global order” composed of a series of national and supranational organisms that supersede old, nation-state-centered forms of sovereignty.’ But the enormity of the Al-Qaeda attacks and the ensuing belligerent response that the Bush administration was bent on waging, what former Central Command’s General John Abizaid calls, the “long war on global terror,” brought the public discourse on Empire back to the role of America in the world— sparking the process over whether the world’s irate “hyper-power” had embarked on a “new imperialism.” Soon, the post-September 11 cacophony over American Empire merged with long-standing high-profile debates on “globalization” toform narratives that explored the meanings and normative implications of what I have referred to else-where as “imperial globalism.”3

Contemporary globalization research increasingly occurs within the loose academic framework of “g... more Contemporary globalization research increasingly occurs within the loose academic framework of “global studies,” which, in the late 1990s, emerged as a transdisciplinary endeavor exploring the many dimensions of globalization. After an initial comparative discussion of the academic use of the concept “transdisciplinarity,” this chapter argues that attempts to understand the social complexities related to today’s globalization processes raise a plethora of empirical, normative, and epistemic concerns that cannot be sorted out by specialists operating within the narrow and often rather arbitrary confines of single disciplines and their associated idioms. To illustrate these dynamics, this chapter presents concrete examples of how globalization researchers working within the global studies framework employ transdisciplinarity strategies to understand global complexity. As will be shown, they are critical of the tendency to compartmentalize social existence into discreet spheres of activity, and thus have been increasingly committed to the engagement and integration of multiple knowledge systems and research methodologies. The chapter closes with a call to extend these transdisciplinary modes of engaging in globalization research. Indeed, this transdisciplinary imperative of “globalizing the research imagination” has the potential to reenergize and reconfigure research projects across the social sciences and humanities

When searching for a definition of globalization, it helps to distinguish between globalization, globality, and the global imaginary, which is people’s growing consciousness of the world as a single whole. Globalization as a process does not automatically lead to globalization as a condition. It is a complex, uneven set of processes taking place across world-time and world-space. Globalization is about intensifying planetary interconnectivity.

This article provides a critical response to Clyde W. Barrow and Michelle Keck's recently publish... more This article provides a critical response to Clyde W. Barrow and Michelle Keck's recently published essay in Studies in Political Economy 98-2. First, I find little empirical evidence for their claim that a "false antinomy" separates globalization theory and state theory in leading Global Studies (GS) literature. Quite to the contrary, GS scholars have appreciatively engaged with state theory and also offered criticisms, especially on account of the methodological nationalism underlying much of this literature. Second, this article disputes the way Barrow and Keck characterize my explanation of globalization as a deterministic and metaphysical teleology.

This article argues that the current explosion of right-wing national-populism is intricately con... more This article argues that the current explosion of right-wing national-populism is intricately connected to shifting perceptions of globalization in the world. I contend that a return to the once dominant but now frequently criticized ideational approach to the study of populism as ideology or discourse can provide insightful, if incomplete, explanations of the current populist moment. After a brief opening overview of some influential conceptual perspectives on populism, the article offers an appraisal of some major criticisms leveled against the ideological paradigm by advocates of competing approaches. I argue that the widespread portrayal of populism as a “thin-centered” ideology does not capture the ideational constellation of what I call antiglobalist populism. The currently dominant strain is reflected most prominently in “Trumpism” and similar European manifestations. To make my case, I apply the qualitative method of morphological discourse analysis (MDA) to key 2016 campaign speeches delivered by then presidential candidate Donald J. Trump and to related public remarks presented by British national-populist leader Nigel Farage on American soil. The research findings presented in this article suggest that globalization-related concepts have moved to the core and adjacent symbolic environment of antiglobalist populism. Thus, the general assumption of a “thin” conceptual core of national-populism no longer holds because its morphology has been significantly enriched. Bringing ideology back into populism studies serves the much-needed rehabilitation of a valuable perspective that has been written off too prematurely by many populism scholars.

At the turn of the twenty-first century, globalization - both the process and the idea - bestrode... more At the turn of the twenty-first century, globalization - both the process and the idea - bestrode the world like a colossus. Widely acclaimed by political and economic pundits as the most important phenomenon of our time, it took the world by storm. Two decades later, it has come under sustained attack from the reinvigorated forces of the extreme Right and radical Left. Does globalization still matter in our unsettled world? Responding in the affirmative, this study develops and applies a new framework of an engaged theory of globalization to analyse some of today's most pressing global challenges: the rise of national populism; ecological degradation; rapid urbanization; new sources of insecurity ; and the changing landscape of higher education. Offering a comprehensive appraisal of globalization in our unsettled times, this study addresses why and how transplanetary interrelations continue to matter in a world that is wavering between globalist expansion and nationalist retrenchment.

This article analyzes the complex and subtle dynamics involved in producing and representing the ... more This article analyzes the complex and subtle dynamics involved in producing and representing the global-local nexus in everyday life. Its socio-historical context is the destabilization of the current globalization system -and its associated global imaginary -marked by the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, continuing with the populist explosion in the mid 2010s, and climaxing in the 2020 Global Coronavirus Pandemic. But rather than mischaracterizing the current context as "deglobalization", we describe it as a contemporary intensification of what we have been calling the "Great Unsettling". This era of intensifying objective instability is linked to foundational subjective processes. In particular, we examine the production of an "unhappy consciousness" torn between the enjoyment of global digital mobility and the visceral attachment to the familiar limits of local everyday life. In doing so, we rewrite the approach to the sources of ontological security and insecurity.
