I was discussing with silburygirl the works of fantasy we've read and loved, she was wondering what she'd missed out, and that caused me to pull out my (literally) falling apart copy of A Reader's Guide to Fantasy, Searles, Meachem and Franklin, eds (1982) long out of print and thus out of date. Nevertheless, I thought I'd share with you, and her, it's "Seven-League Shelf" of indispensable classics in the genre in hopes you'll share with me what would be on your must-read list. I later added the titles from The Ultimate Reading List by Mosley, et. al. I've put in bold those I've actually read and loved and put in underline those I've read and loathed or couldn't finish. Might make a good meme :-) ( Fantasy Book ShelfCollapse )
Please Help. All you need to do is click. You don't want to hear me whinge or bitch do you? I haz only a week to get 100 clicks for each egg! Or there will be wails and the smell of rotten eggs.
Yes, another bit of madness inspired by renitaleandra
The Lovely and Gracious renitaleandra has gifted me with a paid account and thus the ability to use 30 user pics for two months. (And she's trying to lead me into the temptation of making this permanent--whispering about no ads, editing comments, layouts...more icons...) The scary thing is exactly how I expect she will want me to pay her back... ::flexes typing fingers:: Meanwhile, in celebration, I'm going to do a meme I owe lifeasanamazon
Here are the rules: 1. There are 30 questions. 2. Next to each number, write only the name of the person who fits. 3. Answer one question with one name. 4. Don't tell the questions to anyone who isn't doing the meme.
Tag 3-5 people on your f-list and ask them to whom they'd dedicate their fic (that you've chosen of course) if it were published "for real." Then those folks have to tag someone else. Make it fun, but make it real.
For my mom, who taught me how to play chess. And to all the kind people who were so enthusiastic about this fic, especially gardengirl6, who pimped it on WIKTT and Potter Place and brought it so many reviews. And to kobegrace on the Quidditch Pitch, who in her duties as an admin there gave it a good betaing.
She btw, is the author of a lovely genfic short of her own in HP about another Weasley, Ginny, in Se Souvenir. Since she betaed me, I've never been able to rec it on Know-it-Alls, but I otherwise would. Unforgetable fic.
I'm not comfy with tagging anyone, so if you're on my f-list and would like to do this, comment below, and I'll tell you what fic of yours I'd like to see a dedication to.
a. Post a list of 10-20 TV shows you love (current or canceled) b. Have your friends’ list guess your favorite character from each show. c. When guessed, bold the line and write a little bit about why you like that character. d. Post in your own livejournal. (if you want)
1) Star Trek: Original Series silburygirl guessed Kirk - because he never, ever gives up, is fiercely devoted to his crew, and will do whatever it takes even if it breaks his heart. Bonus: fav fanfic: Killasandra's Bitter Glass Kirk/Spock - but not slash. 2) Buffy, the Vampire Slayer silburygirl guessed Buffy - Same as above really--only substitute "friends" and even "fellow students" (in the sense she's their protector) for "crew." Bonus: fav fanfic: Djinn's Starting Over Buffy/Giles 3) Firefly wade_scott guessed Mal - I remember watching Out of Gas, and thinking this is Kirk, had he been born into this world. Mal is the perfect definition of a cynic--a disappointed idealist. Bonus: fav fanfic: Djinn's Old Soldiers Never Die 4) Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Bonus: fav fanfic: Una McCormick's Scorched Earth 5) Star Trek: Voyager silburygirl guessed Janeway - see, Kirk, Buffy, above. Although for those who know the show, the Equinox episode and her actions there almost destroyed the character for me. Bonus: fav fanfic: Macedon/Peg's Talking Stick/Circle 6) Forever Knight wonderfulwrites, probably the only one on my f-list to have seen the show, guessed Natalie--it's actually Nick Knight - because despite his past and nature, he struggled for redemption and to protect those weaker than he. 7) Angel silburygirl guessed Wesley--because he grew from a bumbling idiot to someone who could make the hard calls and pay the price--and cuz he was smart, and to me smart=sexy. Bonus: fav fanfic: Djinn's Blue Rain Falling Illyria-centric 8) Bionic Woman 9) Dead Like Me Bonus: fav fanfic: Djinn's Extended Absence 10) Lois and Clark greyrider guessed Clark - I think it's Dean Cain's portrayal that won me over, because I don't usually go for Supermans--but he gave Clark a charm and integrity, a vulnerability, of his own.
And no—the answer to 2) and 7) is NOT Harmony.
(anyone wants to know—I even know where there’s some good fanfic to be had for 1 - 5 and even one for 9.) Go ahead and tell me yours if you like.
Edited to reflect guesses--anyone want to try for Deep Space Nine, Bionic Woman or Dead Like Me?
To the first ten people who comment, I will write a 100-word drabble for the holiday season.
You must give me: ~ a fandom option: in my case, Harry Potter, Star Trek (any), Jossverse (Buffy/Angel/Firefly) ~ a character (for genfic) or a pairing (if you want a little romance) ~ a keyword to use in the drabble or a color or other prompt.
In return, you must post this meme yourself and take on the first 10 requests.
Oh, and the official word from Rowling's site is that the seventh and last book will be entitled: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
First, write down the names of 12 characters. Then read and answer the questions. You can't look at the questions (or click on the cut) until you write down the 12 characters you're going to use.
[I wrote them down in order of my favorite characters--which, as you'll see, was a horrifying mistake]
1. Severus Snape 2. Hermione Granger 3. Draco Malfoy 4. Albus Dumbledore 5. Harry Potter 6. Minerva McGonagall 7. Percy Weasley 8. Luna Lovegood 9. Blaise Zabini 10. Neville Longbottom 11. Ginny Weasley 12. Ron Weasley
Finally--yes, there has been the mother of all fandom wanks yesterday--but one I think is important to spread the word about. The new admin of Whispers, who calls hirself "Hermione," told authors in emails that if they didn't update stories at Whispers, their stories would be updated for them. Then someone noticed that Whispers had a new TOS that asserted a right to do batch uploads of stories from Whispers and other archives. "Hermione" then promoted on WIKTT a new archive, The Pensieve, for all completed multi-chaptered HG/SS stories. On that archive were stories lifted w/o permission from other archives. To top it all off, parts of stories and author's notes were lopped off. Rather than just repeat all that ensued, I'll just link to three LJ entries on the subject that were publicly posted:
I deleted my own WIP, Book of Shadows from the old Whispers today. (I couldn't yesterday--"Hermione" had removed that option at that time.) Whispers was the first archive I ever posted my HP fic to, and I'll never forget the welcome I got there. I look forward to being a part of the new site run by the old admin Whispers admin, azraelgeffen, which will be called WIKTT Archives.
Tagged by bambu345 and thus with no plausible means of escape, I grabbed the nearest book with more than 100 pages, (Possesion, by A. S. Byatt) and will proceed to follow the directions...
1. Grab the nearest book. 2. Open the book to page 123. 3. Find the fifth sentence. 4. Post the text of the next 3 sentences on your blog along with these instructions. 5. Don’t you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest. 6. Tag three people.
You know, all of you are lucky--if I'd reached out to my right instead of my left, you would have been treated instead to a passage from Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. Aren't you glad I'm left handed?
I'm going to tag.... closetravenclaw, greyrider, and wolfmoonshadow, since I twisted their arms they volunteered when I saw this while I was in chat the other night.

Yeah, running is notoriously hard on the joints--I'm hoping with the training they give us and with the right form--and not overdoing it--I can continue to run injury free. I can't say I love…

And I was really lucky--in a lot of ways I've come through this stronger than when it all started :-)
Especially after all you came through ...
It got more than a grin in places :-)
