We besparen veel tijd met de auto, het internet en allerlei andere hulpmiddelen. Dit artikel gaat over het identificeren van sociale impact van technologie. De veranderingen in de technologie hebben consequenties voor de manier waarop vastgoed wordt ingezet. Een mogelijke manier om meer inzicht te genereren is het identificeren van de gevolgen van technologische veranderingen. Bouma legt uit hoe gevolgen geidentificeerd kunnen worden met behulp van een case over digiborden op lagere scholen. Ook besteed ze aandacht aan het onstaan van de invloed van technologie.
Designers have grown increasingly interested in social consequences of new technologies. As socia... more Designers have grown increasingly interested in social consequences of new technologies. As social impacts become increasingly important it might be fruitful to understand how social impacts develop and how a designer can anticipate these consequences. In health care practices, for instance, it is important to control unintended social impacts at forehand. Social impact is an outcome of the mediating effect of a technology with its social environment. Human behaviour in a social environment can be analysed from the perspective of a social ecological system. To anticipate social impacts simulations of social practices are needed. To simulate practices the persona approach has been adapted to a screenplay approach in which the elements of a social ecology are used to gain a rich description of a social environment. This has been applied for a 'Heart Managers' case. It was concluded that the screenplay approach can be used for a systematic simulation of future social impacts.
Designers are not always aware of all social consequences of technology, despite practicing user-... more Designers are not always aware of all social consequences of technology, despite practicing user-centred research. With the introduction of disruptive technologies intended and unintended social impacts can be expected, therefore they need to be anticipated. But in general design practices social impacts are completely overlooked. An awareness of the need to anticipate social impacts will not develop automatically. For this purpose a model of awareness has been developed. The model has been evaluated by 12 students. It appeared that the students were able to use the working model, but it turned out to be difficult to imagine changing social practices. It was therefore concluded that students need to increase understanding of the complexity of social practices.

What is more, designers are plainly not always aware of all social consequences of technology, despite practicing user-centred design. Modern technology creates possibilities to influence social behaviour. Once a designer aims at defined social changes, the consequences of technology for practices become a responsibility, too. The present research is aimed at providing tools and methods to anticipate social consequences at an earlier stage of the design process.
The physical and technical characteristics of a cohousing community influence social interactions... more The physical and technical characteristics of a cohousing community influence social interactions of dwellers. Technology for instance has a mediating effect on the praxis and/or the perception of humans. In the social ecology of a cohousing community social and individual factors also influence social interactions between residents. This paper presents the relation between social interactions and the physical characteristics of the common areas in a cohousing community and discusses the possibilities for technology to support social contact design principles of cohousing communities.
The study was performed in two directions. Firstly information about the effect of technology and social interactions in cohousing communities was derived from literature. Secondly a project with students was performed that concentrated on the importance of common areas for social interactions in two cohousing communities. From the literature and the case studies it can be concluded that common hallways and the common room have an important function in facilitating social nteractions. Technology may be used to support these functions and influence interactions by a change of script or a change in the perception of the dwellers.
