Despite the popular assumption that sexual desire and romantic love are simply two ways of expres... more Despite the popular assumption that sexual desire and romantic love are simply two ways of expressing the same phenomenon, new research on the neurological mechanisms behind these two interacting systems suggests a distinct difference in how the brain responds in situations of desire versus love. This research shows that although sexual desire can, and often does, play a role in the development of romantic love, it is not a necessary feature of falling in love. By showing that desire and romantic love work within separate neurological circuits and utilize different neurochemicals-or use the same ones in different ways-researchers seem to be on the trail of discovering the answer to an age-old question: what is love, and how does one fall in love?

For the purposes of this essay, the student in question will be called Evan, who is a second semester senior graduating in the fall of 2012 with a major in international business. The following essay will be structured in sections, beginning with my initial reasons for choosing this particular student and culture in general, followed by an analysis of what I learned subsequent to the interview process. After that, I will provide the details about Evan's life and experience across cultures that emerged from the interview, with an attempt to explain these details in tandem with theories of self construction and other research. These theories are meant to illuminate possible explanations for the emotions and development that Evan experienced as a result of his time in the United States; they are not definitive.
