Geeky Rambles

I like computer games, in particular shooters with a bit of story or just a cool and consistent aesthetic. Some of my favorite games are Quake, Cliver Barker's Undying, American McGee's Alice, and Heroes of Might & Magic III.

Yeah, not really new games. This is just a bit of framing, I guess.

I've just gotten back from fighting an alien horde in a metropolis on the eastern seaboard. I was playing Champions Online, which you can do for free these days.

It was a lot of fun with a side order of frustrating. Much of the latter was my fault.

Sand (whom I was playing with) had made a blue alien swashbuckler, and I had made a blue alien brick (called Ultros!) We had decided to made characters that sorta fit together. As it turned out they were alien space pirates who had been mostly reformed.
You don't have to do stuff like that, but being a roleplayer, how could you not? That's half the fun. It's also a large part of the fun of supers. You make up some shit and run with it. While you may never be Jack Kirby or Alan Moore, you get to play with something that is at once out there, derivative, as well as your very own. Champions Online let us do that.

Where it is an annoyance, is when you have to navigate the game world itself, and figure out what's what. I think I could get hooked on computer gaming if for a few niggling details. I'm pretty sure I have the addictive personality (behold my love of the internet, and to a lesser extent beer).
That niggling detail seems to be the lack of humanity in the game. Playing a computer game, even a seriously cool one where I can kick alien butt and chat with my man Sand all the while, feels like playing an old-school rpg (pen and paper) with a GM who won't answer questions.

I had a great time, but I got annoyed enough to call a halt to the proceedings when I couldn't advance due to not having completed the correct sub-quest.
I'll plat again, but I need that kind of gaming in small portions. Having an actual person overseeing the proceedings means everything.

After that bout of nerd-ejecta, you need something cool:
