"For thirty years you dreamt you were a hero, and condoned a thousand petty lapses--because a hero, of course, can do no wrong." -- Sartre
When you feel that you have an enemy, or that you're on the right side of an issue, that becomes a justification in itself. You're not as bad as THEM. Being on the right side has bought you those thousand petty lapses.
I'm not the most strident Atheist you're likely to meet. I'm very much convinced that there are no 'voices in the sky' though (you can recognise the classy Atheists by the fact that they quote Motörhead instead of A.J.Ayer, Robert Ingersoll or Dawkins). Yet songs like these move me profoundly.
Roll 1d10 1 Moral depravity 2 Rebellion 3 Superficiality (desire to please liberal professors) 4 Error 5 Poor relationship with father 6 Division in religion 7 Learned times, peace, and prosperity (allowing secular indoctrination. . .a good plague or disaster would solve the problem no doubt) 8 Negative experiences 9 Scientism 10 Pick one, roll again.
My Atheist group was like a protracted game of Russian roulette with pastries. We'd meet for coffee every Sunday and not believe in each other.
I'm the only one left.
Sometimes I miss those meetings. I remember Edith casually moving the coffee creamer within my reach, while studiously ignoring me. In this abyss of a world, it's the closest I've ever come to love.
Yep, I'm posting Stephen Fry stuff again. He is very charming for one, and he speaks eloquently on subjects that interest me and often occupy my thoughts. I don't always agree with the man, but I don't feel as though I ought to.
