This Week In Security: Ubiquiti Fixes, And FreeBSD Joins The Club You Don’t Want To Join

Ubiquiti released a new security bulletin detailing fixes for six security issues, including one rated 9.1 (critical) and one scoring a perfect 10.0 on the CVE risk scale.

The vulnerabilities range from path traversal revealing configuration files (escaping from the web server by requesting a path like “../../../../../etc/passwd” for instance), to command injection (running arbitrary shell commands on the system), and actually changing device configurations. Some of the reported vulnerabilities require an account on the management server, but some only require network access .

Fortunately, all of the vulnerabilities require access to the network in the first place to exploit – but this could include access to open guest networks as well as trusted users. If you run Ubiquti or UniFi equipment, chances are the automatic update function has already integrated the fixes, but make sure to check the advisory to see if you’re impacted and update accordingly!

FreeBSD Root Exploit

FatGid lets FreeBSD join the fun of kernel exploits to gain root.

The FatGid vulnerability doesn’t require any manipulation of disk cache; instead it is a direct kernel stack overflow in a system call. The kernel miscalculates the size of a variable as 8 bytes instead of 4, which when used later interacting with a user buffer allows the stack overflow.

Like the recent spate of Linux local privilege escalation attacks, this requires the attacker to already have an account on the system or the ability to run arbitrary programs, but remember that any bug in network services which allows command execution gets you there, so if you run network exposed FreeBSD, it’s time to update!

Kali365 Phishing-as-a-Service

Phishing-as-a-service platforms have been gaining traction, allowing criminals to automate targeting users with crafted lures. The FBI has issued a warning about the Kali365 service in particular.

Kali365 targets credentials for Microsoft 365 accounts by directing users to the official Microsoft portal for linking additional devices to the account, attaching an attacker device directly to the user identity. Alternatively, the framework steals credentials by directing the user through a hostile service which presents a false login page which captures browser sessions along with authentication cookies and tokens once the user answers the fake multi-factor login prompts.

Automating the phishing process lowers the bar for the skill level needed to create authentic-looking lures and makes it simpler for criminal groups to attack large numbers of users; Phishing-as-a-service groups operate as companies offering customer support, tracking dashboards, and pre-made phishing templates.

Glassworm Botnet Takedown

CrowdStrike, Google, and the ShadowServer Foundation have done a coordinated takedown of the infrastructure used by the Glassworm supply-chain botnet.

Glassworm has been mentioned previously; it is one of several major worms infecting the open source package supply chain repositories like NPM and PyPi or the Visual Studio extension repository. Once a victim installs a compromised package or extension, the Glassworm trojan steals any saved authentication tokens for package repositories, GitHub accounts, AI services, and any SSH keys found, and begins the stage two infection. Using the stolen credentials, the worm infects any GitHub workflows, packages, and extensions the user has access to, and installs a remote-access trojan which waits for further commands.

Glassworm used a complex control server structure including blockchain memos, BitTorrent files, and public Google Calendar entries, but the coalition of companies was able to interrupt all control channels simultaneously. Hard-coded aspects of the worm will continue to function, but all behavior which requires downloading payloads from the control servers has been disrupted.

This isn’t the first time multiple Internet companies have coordinated to take down malware, but it’s always good to see action against threats which have been decimating the package repository infrastructure lately.

TechCrunch Spyware Avoidance

On the positive side of things, TechCrunch has an article about modern features to protect users against spyware. If this isn’t news to you, there’s still almost certainly someone in your life who will benefit from a user-friendly write up of best practices!

Both major commercial mobile platforms (iOS and Android) offer advanced protection features which are minimally invasive. For users who are likely to be higher targets of spyware like journalists, lawyers, and human rights activists, or simply those who are worried, these features offer real protection.

The features explained in the article include Apple’s Lockdown mode, Androids Advanced protection mode, and WhatsApp specific application settings, all of which work to reduce common attack surfaces for devices. The advanced security modes typically have minor impacts on performance and battery life due to disabling optimization features which introduce additional complexity and attack surfaces (such as just-in-time compilation of JavaScript code into native instructions.). When situations call for an abundance of caution, a few percent of battery life daily is a reasonable compromise.

Microsoft Bans NightmareEclipse

An exploit researcher known only as “NightmareEclipse” has been featured here several times in the past months already. Showing intense frustration with their experience with the administrators of the Microsoft security bug bounty program, they have taken to releasing zero-day exploits against Windows, often coinciding with Patch Tuesday (clearly no accident; by releasing a new exploit on the same day as the Microsoft patch set, it’s unlikely to be fixed before the next months Patch Tuesday at the earliest). Previous exploits released by NightmareEclipse include BlueSun and RedHammer (local user to Windows SYSTEM privilege escalation), UnDefend to disable Windows Defender, and YellowKey which unlocks BitLocker drives using a collection of nothing more than magically named files.

Toms Hardware reports that Microsoft has disabled the researchers GitHub accounts (GitHub being owned by Microsoft has long been a point of concern for security researchers who find vulnerabilities in Microsoft products), as well as the actual Microsoft account used by the researcher.

While it’s certainly within the terms of service of Microsoft and GitHub that accounts may be terminated, the optics are particularly poor in this case, given the confusion around the initial interactions which led the researchers original anger. NightmareEclipse has moved their example code repositories to GitLab in the mean time, and promises Microsoft that “I will make sure your bones are shattered on July 14”, implying there will be additional releases (on, you guessed it, what looks like another Patch Tuesday).

Further clouding the issue, an official Microsoft statement indicates they are attempting to bring criminal (not just civil) charges against researchers who do not cooperate with the Microsoft disclosure policies, a stance which will certainly in no way exacerbate the situation.

Fingerprinting Devices by SSD

Dan Goodin at Ars Technica highlights a new paper on fingerprinting users via SSD disk performance, using just standard JavaScript.

The modern web is a hellscape of user tracking, and this attack, dubbed FROST, highlights another technique for identifying unique devices and user patterns based entirely on hardware behavior. By generating a large file using local browser storage via OPFS (origin private file system, an API for JavaScript to create raw files inside the browser storage area) and continually reading and writing data while monitoring the performance, a web page is able to monitor the disk access performance of the device.

Using a neural network trained on timing data, researchers say they are able to determine what apps may be running on the computer alongside the browser – and sometimes even what other websites are being viewed, based solely on the delays in disk IO caused by other applications and websites accessing the SSD. The paper will be presented in July, with researchers saying that the neural network can be trained to recognize “any system which reliably generates SSD accesses”.

Likely, browser developers can mitigate FROST by decreasing the performance of file operations in the OPFS API so that the performance data lacks the fidelity needed to derive user behavior.

FROST is a “side channel attack”; by monitoring one set of characteristics, side channel attacks are able to infer other system behaviors. Side channel attacks can be incredibly subtle and difficult to predict: Another side channel attack method has been to use extremely fine-grained monitoring of the power consumption of a device to derive encryption keys, predicting the CPU instructions and values based on the amount of power used to set the internal registers.

Improving Memory Safety in C#

Programming languages have been moving towards stronger default memory models, making programs more secure by default by eliminating behaviors which are commonly exploitable. Using a memory-safe language does not prevent logic errors or other security issues, but can still help by eliminating common mistakes.

Microsoft has posted an extensive article about new enhancements for C# in .NET 11. Borrowing in many ways (that’s a programming joke) from the Rust memory model, C# 16 will add additional memory enforcement and object lifetime, detecting when memory is no longer available and preventing invalid memory accesses on expired objects, with the goal of eliminating use-after-free memory corruption and attacks.

C# 16 will also increase the meaning of the “unsafe” keyword, a mechanism introduced in C# 1.0 and since heavily adopted by newer languages such as Rust and Swift. Code marked as unsafe in C# 16 is able to bypass the stricter memory model, but all code referencing it must also be marked as unsafe. Making unsafe code more difficult to use increases the overall friction of doing things the dangerous way, while clearly marking code which is higher risk.

There are few magic bullets for secure programming, but reducing the ways a programmer can make simple mistakes can be a big win.

This Week In Security: Linux Flaws, Python Ownage, And A Botnet Shutdown

The ides of security March are upon us — Qualys reports the discovery by their threat research unit of vulnerabilities in the Linux AppArmor system used by SUSE, Debian, Ubuntu, and Kubernetes as an additional security mechanism and application firewall.

AppArmor was added to Linux in 2010, and the vulnerabilities Qualys discovered have been present since 2017, and allow unprivileged (non-root) local users to elevate privileges by executing arbitrary code in the kernel, gaining root access, or perform a denial-of-service attack across the entire system by replacing all AppArmor behavior with “deny all” rules.

All Linux kernels since Linux 4.11 are vulnerable. If your Linux distribution enables AppArmor, and quite a few do, you’ll want to be updating as soon as fixes are available from your distribution maintainers. On systems with untrusted users, such as shared environments, VPS server environments, and the like, this is even more critical and urgent. Even on single-user systems, vulnerabilities like these allow other exploits, like the Python attack below, mechanisms to elevate their access and persistence.

At the time of writing, the full details of the AppArmor vulnerability are limited until the Linux Kernel team releases a stable version with the fixes for distribution maintainers. Qualys has published the technical write-up with the currently public information.

Python Projects Compromised

StepSecurity reports on a new campaign to infect Python projects on GitHub with a complex malware that, once deployed, appears to be yet another crypto and login stealer.

The attacker first gains access to the GitHub credentials via another info stealing worm – the Glassworm stealer infects VSCode extensions with over 35,000 downloads of infected extensions in October of 2025. Glassworm harvests NPM, GitHub, and OpenVSX credentials and sends them to a remote command and control (C2) server. What the Flock? It’s probably just some quirk of The Almighty Algorithm, but ever since we featured a story on Flock’s crime-fighting drones last week, we’ve been flooded with other stories about the company, some of which aren’t very flattering. The first thing that we were pushed was this handy interactive map of the company’s network of automatic license plate readers. We had no idea how extensive the network was, and while our location is relatively free from these devices, at least ones operated on behalf of state, county, or local law enforcement, we did learn to our dismay that our local Lowe’s saw fit to install three of these cameras on the entrances to their parking lot. Not wishing to have our coming and goings documented, we’ll be taking our home improvement dollars elsewhere for now.

This Week In Security: Rackspace Falls Over, Poison Ping, And The WordPress Race

In what’s being described as a Humpty-Dumpty incident, Rackspace customers have lost access to their hosted Exchange service, and by extension, lots of archived emails. The first official word of trouble came on December 2nd, and it quickly became clear that this was more than the typical intern-tripped-over-the-cable incident. Nearly a week later, Rackspace confirmed what observers were beginning to suspect, it was a ransomware attack. There’s not a lot of other answers yet, and the incident FAQ answers are all variations on a theme.

Our investigation into the incident is ongoing and will take time to complete. To ensure the integrity of the ongoing investigation, we do not have additional details to share at this time.

Knowing the security issues that have plagued Microsoft Exchange over the last couple of months, one has to wonder if Rackspace was breached as a result of the PowerShell problems. What’s staggering is that a week after the incident, Rackspace still has no timeline for service restoration.

Rackspace isn’t the only major ransomware attack this week, as a hospital in Versailles has partially shut down due to another ransomware attack. Operations were canceled, and work has to be done the old fashioned way, without the network to support.

This Week In Security: Vulnerable Boxes, Government Responses, And New Tools

The Cyclops Blink botnet is thought to be the work of an Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) from Russia, and seems to be limited to Watchguard and Asus devices. The normal three and four letter agencies publicized their findings back in February, and urged everyone with potentially vulnerable devices to go through the steps to verify and disinfect them if needed. About a month later, in March, over half the botnet was still online and functioning, so law enforcement took a drastic step to disrupt the network. After reverse-engineering the malware itself, and getting a judge to sign off on the plan, the FBI remotely broke in to 13 of the Watchguard devices that were working as Command and Control nodes. They disinfected those nodes and closed the vulnerable ports, effectively knocking a very large chunk of the botnet offline.

The vulnerability in WatchGuard devices that facilitated the Botnet was CVE-2022-23176, a problem where an “exposed management access” allowed unprivileged users administrative access to the system. That vague description sounds like either a debugging interface that was accidentally included in production, or a flaw in the permission logic. Regardless, the problem was fixed in a May 2021 update, but not fully disclosed. Attackers apparently reversed engineered the fix, and used it to infect and form the botnet. The FBI informed WatchGuard in November 2021 that about 1% of their devices had been compromised. It took until February to publish remediation steps and get a CVE for the flaw.

This is definitely non-ideal behavior. More details and a CVE should have accompanied the fix back in May. As we’ve observed before, obscurity doesn’t actually prevent sophisticated actors from figuring out vulnerabilities, but it does make it harder for users and security professionals to do their jobs. Bots That Snag The Hottest Fashion While Breaking Social Trust In Commerce

Scarcity on the Internet is the siren song of bot writers. Maybe you’ve lost an eBay bid in the last milliseconds, or missed out on a hacker con when tickets sold out in under a minute — your corporeal self has been outperformed by a bot. But maybe you didn’t know bots are on a buying frenzy in the hyped-up world of fashion. From limited-run sneakers to anything with the word Supreme printed on it, people who will not accept any substitute in wearing the rarest and most sought after are turning to resellers who use bots to snag unobtanium items and profit on the secondary market.

At DEF CON 27 [FinalPhoenix] took the stage to share her adventures in writing bots and uncovering a world that buys and sells purchasing automation, forming groups much like cryptocurrency mining pools to generate leads on when the latest fashion is about to drop. This is no small market either. If your bots are leet enough, you can make a ton of cash. Let’s take a look at what it takes to write a bot, and at the bots-for-sale economy that has grown up around these concepts.

The internet is built with bots in mind and we have Google to thank for this. Their major innovation was moving us off of a curated internet to one that is machine crawled. Everyone wants good Google juice and that means building a site that is friendly to the Google bots that crawl and index the internet. This makes automation for your own purposes quite a bit easier. Namely, the monitor-bots that are used to detect when a retailer has the latest in stock. [FinalPhoenix] demonstrated a simple script that grabs the XML site map, parsing it for newly in-stock items, flagging them when found. But here’s the killer — if your monitor bot is a good one, you can turn it into a discord channel and sell subscriptions to others playing the reseller game, to the tune of $15-30 a month per subscriber.

Once your bot reports stock, the race is on to buy it before anyone else can. For this, you could use the APIs of the site, but that’s time-consuming and a lot easier for retailers to detect and block bot usage. For this part of her botting tools [FinalPhoenix] likes to use web-based bots that go through a browser framework like Chromium and allow obfuscation techniques like scrolling, clicking other items, random pauses, and other simple-minded actions that make your bot appear to be only human. In the examples for this talk, the Puppeteer framework was used for this purpose. In the end, the main role of this part of the bot is to use a verified account to complete the purchase as fast as robotically possible, which is why they’re called buy-bots. Retailers do have some tricks to combat these web-based attacks like adding secret keys in the DOM that need to be sent with the next post, but these are easy to discover and incorporate into the scripts.

This raises up another interesting part of the scheme, the verified accounts. For the best chance at profit, you need multiple accounts, each used just one time to avoid your buy-bot being detected by the retailer. For this, [FinalPHoenix] turns to services that sell accounts in packages of 500-10,000 and cost around just $5-10 per batch.

But wait, here’s where it gets really wild as recursion takes hold. Yes, these buy-bots are for sale (from sites like AIO Bot and usually around $300-1500), but they’re sold in limited quantities so that it’s harder for retailers to notice and take countermeasures. Just like how the clothing was limited release and incentivized bots-wielding resellers to enter the market, there is a secondary market for the bots themselves. [FinalPhoenix] reports that reselling one of these bots can yield $1000-1500 in profit. The same principles apply, and so what we’ve ended up with is bots buying bots to buy clothes. Who knows how many levels of bot-bot transactions there are, but it certainly feels like turtles all the way down.

Bot-based high-speed trading is the real way to make major bank on the securities market. Your average hacker is shut out of that “legitimate” business, but any enterprising programmer has the option of automating whichever reseller market they find most interesting. This breaks the public trust in commerce — buying quality products from a seller connected to their production for a reasonable price. If frustrates the manufacturer, alienates the consumer, but there appears to be little in place preventing it.

What To Do When The Botnet Comes Knocking

“It was a cold and windy night, but the breeze of ill omen blowing across the ‘net was colder. The regular trickle of login attempts suddenly became a torrent of IP addresses, all trying to break into the back-end of the Joomla site I host. I poured another cup of joe, it was gonna be a long night.”

Tech noir aside, there was something odd going on. I get an email from that web-site each time there is a failed login. The occasional login attempt isn’t surprising, but this was multiple attempts per minute, all from different IP addresses. Looking at the logs, I got the feeling they were pulling usernames and passwords from one of the various database dumps, probably also randomly seeding information from the Whois database on my domain.
