The emphasis is given to the commercialization of the Ottoman agriculture while the peripheralization process of the Empire is evaluated. In this context, the effect of the world capitalist system on the Ottoman cotton production and export is considered. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the likely effects of the Customs Union between Turke... more The purpose of this paper is to investigate the likely effects of the Customs Union between Turkey and the EU on the profitability of Turkish manufacturing industry'. With that aim, the determinants of the price-cost margins of 12 Turkish manufacturing sub-sectors for the years 1994-2000 are estimated by using panel data analysis. Our results suggest that the import ratio has an inverse effect on the price-cost margin of the Turkish manufacturing industry. Similarly, our study also indicates that there is a negative relation between the export ratio and the price-cost margin. Thus, it can be concluded that by creating competitive effect the Customs Union decreased the price-cost margins in the Turkish manufacturing industry.

Indirect and direct "wage-share" of one unit of exports are estimated by using the input-output table of 2002 and the sectoral Trade in Value Added (TiVA) statistics. Our estimation results show that the average wage content of one unit of exported product, which is used as a proxy for the employment generated by exports, decreased between the years 1995 and 2008. The falling domestic value added (DVA) component of exports is responsible for this weakening role of exports in employment generation. The firm level data indicate similar results in terms of the direct domestic value added and employment effects of exports for the period 2003-2012. In this study, it has been attempted to evaluate recent trends of human development in Turkey thr... more In this study, it has been attempted to evaluate recent trends of human development in Turkey through comparing her trends with different group of countries and to identify necessary means for attaining higher levels of human development. It has been shown that Turkey is among the countries that have rapid improvements in terms of human development for the last quarter of the twentieth century. However, the comparison with similar developing countries has been indicated that Turkey has not been able to improve its relative position significantly. In addition, improvements in human development area within the country has not been shared equally either among the geographical regions or between the genders besides the various imbalances.
The main aim of the paper is to provide an empirical analysis of the impact of trade liberalizati... more The main aim of the paper is to provide an empirical analysis of the impact of trade liberalization on regional disparities in Turkey. This also provides a way of testing competing hypothesis on the effect of trade liberalization on inter-regional income inequalities. To this end, a regional income inequality equation for Turkey is estimated by using panel data method. According to estimation results, the export performance of the regions is one of the leading factors responsible for the relative per capita income level of the region. In other words, the higher the per capita export of the region in Turkey, the more will be the per capita income of this region. Furthermore, it has been observed that the changing pattern of per capita export dispersion among the Turkish regions during the period 1990-2000, has played a crucial role in alleviating the increasing income gap between regions. Therefore, Turkish data strongly supports the argument of Krugman and Livas (1996).
