Some Observations on the Banditry of the Sarıkeçili Nomads and the Delibaş Rebellion Abstract: This article examines the experiences of certain groups of people from the Sarıkeçili nomadic tribe, which still maintains the nomadic way of life with animal husbandry, and questions the real factors behind their acts generally perceived as “banditry” from the 19th century onwards. Analyzing the conditions that force them into pastoral nomadism, the essay demonstrates how, in the formative period of Turkish modernization process, they developed strategies including the “banditry” when felt caught under the pressure coming from the state, settled peasantry and the economy. Utilizing extensively the archival material from Ottoman and Republican archives as well as the records of oral history work, the article takes the cases of Konya Bozkır and Delibaş rebellions which involved the said nomadic groups in the years 1919 and 1920. Keywords: Pastoral nomadism, banditry, Yörüks, Sarıkeçili Yörüks, Turcomans, 1919 Bozkır Rebellion, 1920 Delibaş Rebellion.
