パリが一番華やかだった時代を駆け抜けた、生粋のジャポニスム(Japonisme)を地で行く2人の芸者、貞奴と花子。若き天才画家ピカソが貞奴の舞台姿を描き、巨匠ロダンが花子の面像50体余を彫刻する・・・
それは、日本では1868年(明治維新)鎖国から開国へ江戸から明治へと長い眠りからさめ、日清戦争1894〜1895年(明治27年〜28年)から日露戦争1904〜1905年(明治37年〜38年)へと突入し、近代化へと拍車をかけ、そしてパリでは1855年・1867年・1878年・1889年・1900年と19世紀の半ばから20世紀の初頭までに5度の万国博覧会が開催され、ベル・エポック(Belle Époque・良き時代)と呼ばれ、ヨーロッパ中でパリが一番繁栄した華やかな時代を迎えていた・・・

その頃、イギリスで起こった第一次産業革命が定着し、第二段階として、第二次産業革命が西欧に浸透する。1889年パリ万博にエッフェル塔が完成し、1900年のパリ万国博覧会開催に合わせて、オルレアン鉄道のオルセー駅が鉄道駅舎兼ホテルとして完成。権力が一般市民に移行し、貴族から新興ブルジョアジーに移って行く。1867年(慶応3年)のパリ万博に日本が初めて、幕府、薩摩藩、佐賀藩がそれぞれ 出展する。当時パリではジャポニスムブームが起こり、ロートレック (1864〜1901年)は侍姿で写真を撮っている。モネ(1840〜1926年)が1876年に36歳で描いた「ラ・ジャポネーズ・La Japonaise 」やマネ(1832〜1883年)やエミール・ゾラ(1840〜1902年)の日本趣味、ゴッホ(1853〜1890年)の浮世絵の模写や「タンギー爺さんの肖像」の背景に描かれ、ジャポニスムはぷんぷんと臭いを放っていた。
そしてそれは、パリと日本の「美の感性」が見事に交差した瞬間かも知れない？・・・




｢マダム貞奴｣　(さだやっこ)・・・
1871年（明治4年）〜1946年（昭和21年）

東京は日本橋の両替商「越後屋」の12番目の子（小山 貞）として生まれ生家の没落により、7歳の時に芳町の芸妓置屋「浜田屋」の女将、浜田屋亀吉の養女となり「貞奴」を襲名し、時の総理伊藤博文や西園寺公望をごひいきに、1894年 (明治27年) 自由民権運動の活動家で書生芝居をしていた川上音二郎と結婚する・・・
音二郎の2度もの衆院選挙落選で資金難に陥り、1898年 (明治31年) 2人は、築地河岸よりボートに乗り国外へ脱出するも淡路島に漂着して一命を取り留める。翌年の1899年 (明治31年) 、川上音二郎一座を旗揚げしアメリカ巡演に同行し「貞奴」の人生は大きく旋回する・・・

川上音二郎・貞奴一座は、1899年アメリカのサンフランシスコ公演で公演資金を興行師に全額持ち逃げされ、一座は異国の地で無一文から在留邦人の支援などで苦境を乗り越え、シアトル公演の「芸者と武士」で空前の人気を得る・・・
その後一座はロンドンを廻り1900年(明治33年)パリで行われた第5回パリ万国博覧会を訪れ、会場の一角にあったアメリカ人女性興行師、ロイ・フラー(Loie Fuller)の劇場で「遠藤武者」｢芸者と武士」の二本立てを公演する。7月4日の初日の公演には、彫刻家ロダンも招待され、ロダンは貞奴に魅了され彼女の彫刻を作りたいと申し出たが、彼女はロダンの名声を知らず、時間がないとの理由で断ったという逸話がある・・・

8月にはフランス大統領エミール・ルーベが官邸のエリーゼ宮で開いた園遊会に招かれ「娘道成寺」を踊った。踊り終えた貞奴に大統領夫人が握手を求め、官邸の庭を連れ立って散歩したという。こうして彼女は「マダム貞奴」の通称で日本人初の女優として一躍有名になる。そしてパリの社交界にデビューした貞奴の影響は、キモノ風の「ヤッコドレス」の流行や、香水「ヤッコ」が発売され・・・

フランスの演劇雑誌「ル・テアトル」( Le Théâtre) の表紙を飾り、クロード・ドビュッシーは貞奴の琴を聞き交響曲「海」に組み込み、アンドレ・ジッドは彼女の演技を絶賛し・・・
当時パリに来ていた19歳のピカソが描いた貞奴の舞台姿のスケッチ（パステル画）が、バルセロナのピカソ美術館に残っている・・・

これより僅かに2年後の1902年・・・
34歳で踊子としてヨーロッパに渡った「花子」は一座を旗揚げし、1906年にロイ・フラー(Loie Fuller)と共にマルセイユで開催されていた植民地博覧会で公演を行い、その博覧会を訪れていたロダンは、旧知のロイ・フラーの勧めで「芸者の仇討ち」や「ハラキリ」を演じていた花子の公演を見る・・・

特に、花子が桜の木の下で斬られて悶死する断末魔の表情に衝撃を受け、花子にモデルの以来を申し出て、1906年に66歳のロダンは、花子をモデルに制作を始める・・・
花子は身長が138cmと小柄であり「プチト・ハナコ」(小さい花子) と呼ばれ、巡業がない時は自宅でロダン夫妻と寝食を共にするほどの親交があった・・・
花子は欧米18ヶ国を巡業してスーパースターとなり、ロダンが制作した花子の面像50体余の彫刻やスケッチが、ロダン美術館(Musée Rodin)に残っている・・・
高村光太郎が1906年（明治39年）に留学、ニューヨークに1年間、その後ロンドンに、1907年（明治40年)にパリに9ヶ月滞在しロダン邸を訪問したり、当時パリにいた森鴎外の息子(森於菟：おと)の家庭教師で、ロダンと花子との間を通訳をした人物の情報を元に鴎外は1910年に短編小説「花子」を発表している・・・

｢花子｣　(本名・太田ひさ)・・・
1868年（慶応4年）〜1945年（昭和21年）

本名「太田ひさ」は、慶応4年 (1868年) 尾張国中島郡上祖父江村 (現・愛知県一宮市上祖父江) に生まれ、2歳の時に親元を離れて名古屋に移り住み、4歳の時に養子に出され「酒井ひさ」となる。家は没落し旅芸人一座に入れられ、1880年 (明治13年) 舞子になり、1884年 (明治17年) に芸者となり、1888年 (明治21年) に身請けされ結婚するが、10年後の1898年 (明治31年) に離婚。同年再婚するが1901年 (明治34年) に再び離婚し、翌年の1902年 (明治35年) 、旅芸人一座としてデンマークコペンハーゲンへ渡り花子の旅が始まり、1905年、イギリスのロンドンでロイ・フラーと出会い一座を旗揚げし、看板女優となりそのと時の芸名「花子」と名乗る・・・・・・花子37歳

1914年(大正3年) に第一次世界大戦が勃発、花子はヨーロッパに留まり、慈善興業を行ないながら、1916年(大正5年)戦況の悪化により帰国する。フランスでは、翌1917年(大正6年)ロダンの妻ローズが死去し、更に9ヵ月後にロダンも77年の生涯を閉じている・・・
そして花子は、1918年(大正7年)に再びイギリスに渡り、巡業を再開。1921年(大正10年)に帰国する・・・花子53才

帰国後、妹が住んでいた岐阜の芸者置屋「新駒」に身を寄せ、1927年(昭和2年)に高村光太郎が訪れ、著書「小さい花子」にその時の様子が書かれている。日本に持ち帰った数多くのロダンとの交流の品々は第二次世界大戦で大部分を岐阜空襲で失ったという。花子は、大戦終結の1945年(昭和20年)岐阜市西園町で丹毒で死去、77年の波乱の人生の幕を閉じた・・・


ロダンが花子をモデルにした作品は約60点ほど、一人の人間をこれ程多く製作したのは珍しく、そのうち2点を花子は日本に持ち帰っている。その持ち帰ったロダンの2つの作品「死の顔・花子」と「空想する女・花子」は現在、新潟市美術館に保存されている・・・

そして日本では、静岡県立美術館のロダン館に「花子のマスク」が一体と、それ以外に一般公開はされてないが、松方幸次郎氏購入の松方コレクションの1907年頃のロダン作(ブロンズ)「花子の頭部」が国立西洋美術館に収められている・・・

その後の「マダム貞奴」は・・・
女優を育成するため、音二郎とともに帝国女優養成所を創立の為、翌年の1901年には貞奴と音次郎はフランスの劇場や女優養成学校を視察に再度パリを訪れ、1908年に帝国女優養成所を創設後、1911年(明治44年)に音二郎は舞台で倒れ急死する・・・音二郎47歳・貞奴40歳



ほどなくして貞奴は大々的な引退興行を行い「日本の近代女優第一号」として舞台から退き、若い頃の悲恋の相手だった、かつての恋人で福澤諭吉の娘婿の「日本の電力王」と呼ばれる実業家・福澤桃介と1920年頃同居し、夫婦同然の生活を始め、2人が名古屋市内で住んだ邸宅は「二葉御殿」と呼ばれ、政財界など各方面の著名人が集うサロンとなった。現在は復元・移築され「文化のみち二葉館」として2005年（平成17年）に開館している・・・
