One of the consequences of the current urbanization is that an increasing number of families residing in peri-urban areas of small rural towns lack access to basic municipal and ecosystem services. The purpose of the paper is to demonstrate the impacts of peri-urban expansion on municipal services provided by the governments and on ecosystems services through a case study of a small rural town called Makhado Biaba in Limpopo Province of South Africa. Makhado Biaba has been experiencing incessant rapid physical expansion over the years. Such spatial expansion into the peri-urban zone impacts the provision of municipal services such as water, electricity, sewerage, and refuse collection. In 2020, an exploratory mixed-methods study of some anthropocentric and ecosystem changes in Makhado Biaba Local Municipality in northeast South Africa was executed. The basic point of departure is the new Common Transport Policy (CTP) of the EU as of December 1992. The catchword of this document, 'sustainable mobility', has also inspired the title of the report. The findings may be summarized in the following way: The present situation of road transport in Europe is a result of interaction failure rather than of market failure. The reason for this is lack of agreement in the perceptions of problems, goals, measures and their implementation. The world's population is shifting to the cities, and consequently, cities worldwide are grow... more The world's population is shifting to the cities, and consequently, cities worldwide are growing in number and in size. Cities are complex systems, making it extremely difficult to build and run cities in a way that all the elements of the system operate in harmony. Recently a concept of urbanome, the genome of the city was proposed to address this complexity. Here we first explore this concept and analogy, taking advantage of the potential of other 'omics, modern data collection techniques, Big Data analysis methods and a transdisciplinary approach. Then, we propose a theoretical approach to build the urbanome as a means of quantifying and qualifying population outcomes, being a function of the form of an urban area including the built environment, the physical and social services it provides, and the population density.

Increasingly, in cities around the world, women work or study away from home. This article presen... more Increasingly, in cities around the world, women work or study away from home. This article presents an overview of some gender-sensitive initiatives to facilitate the increasing number of journeys, and to make them safer. Following on an introduction of ‘Gender and Development’, some policies by the World Bank and the UN together with the notion of sustainable transport are discussed. The policies stress different aspects of women in transport, but they converge in support of women’s mobility and equal access in cities, although they differ in ‘why’ and ‘how’ women’s issues should be handled. The nexus of the economic and political initiatives, the local context of mobility in cities, and how women act, and interact, in traffic and transport, are viewed in the perspective of ‘gender and development’. The tools in ‘gender and development’ enable a critical reflection of the top-down policies, and in this way, science and policy cross-fertilize.
This paper compiles, evaluates and analyses information from different data sources on accidents ... more This paper compiles, evaluates and analyses information from different data sources on accidents and health, road transport and economic performance in a comprehensive manner to assess the size and impact of road accidents and injuries in regions under increasing motorization. Strategies based on global road safety improvement experiences are presented. In addition the paper aims at discussing a way forward by indicating opportunities and countermeasures that could be implemented to achieve a new level of safety in these regions. The data used comes from e.g. World Health Organization (WHO) and World Bank. Estimations on costs due to road transport injuries are presented. The results clearly demonstrate that road safety is causing large problems and costs with an enormous impact on the wellbeing of people, economy and productivity. There are many obstacles to efficient energy use in the construction and residential sectors. Some of them are technical, but many are organisational, legal, financial, or entirely owing to a lack of knowledge and a comprehensive view. To broaden understanding of these obstacles (and opportunities), we in the ClueE (Collaborative Learning for Urban Energy Efficiency) project want to integrate five critical perspectives concerning energy efficiency in order to produce new knowledge of procedures, consideration, and experiences that make it possible for municipalities to go from ambitious energy efficiency goals to practical reality.
