As James Donahue notes, “confusion and alienation” instigate “an intense search for security and definition,” which both writers observe ends in premature resolution of the “big questions.” This is, of course, highly problematic, as the premature closing off of possible futures restricts the scope of a student’s world, and consequently, inhibits engagement with bigger questions.
In this paper, we draw from our work in our respective disciplines—Ethics and Social Theory (James) and Religion and Psychology (Bauman)—to offer our own unique insights into this problem and provide suggestions for possible remedies which take seriously the Astins’ challenge that ‘there is much more faculty and colleges can do to facilitate students’ spiritual development.

This paper seeks to provide an overview of the issues to be considered in the construction of a psychology of converting in China. China is engaged in dramatic transformations. Since the reforms initiated in 1979, religion has been revitalized and is flourishing. The most dramatic and unexpected growth has taken place in Christianity. This paper seeks to provide the contours of how and why many people are becoming Christians. A preliminary case study provides rich details of the experiences of five university students in Shanghai as they cultivate beliefs and practices that eventually lead them to convert to Christianity. The paper also includes a report on recent studies of the psychology of the converting process in the United States. The work of Ullman, Kirkpatrick, and Paloutzian are highlighted. The paper concludes with an outline of important issues that should be seriously considered as psychologists of religion develop an innovative psychology of converting in China: research methods, gender issues, motivations, network theory, cultural psychology, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

A heuristic stage model of conversion consisting of seven stages: context, crisis, quest, encounter, interaction, commitment, and consequences (Rambo 1995) serves as a framework for integrating the research of these four approaches, providing a fuller understanding of the multilayered processes involved in conversion. The authors hope that the phenomenon of spiritual transformation and conversion will continue to draw the attention of psychologists who increasingly appreciate the complexity and dynamism of religious/spiritual transformation. For the psychology of religion in general and the psychology of conversion and spiritual transformation in particular to be viable and valuable, psychologists will need to join with researchers in the human sciences and religious studies to develop methods and theories worthy of this complex subject. Additionally, through collaboration with psychologists in the People’s Republic of China, the authors look forward to exploring together the fascinating and important issues that emerge as we seek to understand the nature of conversion and spiritual transformation in China.

Conversion and religious/spiritual transformation are central to Christianity, but to other religions as well. This seminar will introduce students to a wide range of experiences and phenomena that are not only personally profound, but culturally and historically significant. The contours of the contemporary world are, to some degree, shaped by the forces of religious conversion and transformation stimulated by the endeavors of Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, Christians, Muslims, and many other religious movements. This class will combine the resources of various disciplines to explore these rich phenomena. The format of the class is a graduate seminar. Each student will conduct his or her own research and present it to the class. o Or; We invite you to submit a brief (1 page maximum) written proposal for a third option that fulfils this course requirement: If you select this option, you must submit your written proposal to the faculty by noon on Friday, November 16. Your proposal should include a description of how your project fulfils the assessment criteria. If your proposal is approved, the faculty will notify you via eMail by 11/23.

The course will follow a stepwise skilldevelopment process, beginning with some of the most basic skills and building progressively toward an integrated approach to situations demanding pastoral care. Special attention will be given not only to the unique pastoral offices and to religious perspectives in the Anglican tradition, but also to the varied religious perspectives and needs represented by our increasingly multicultural and multi-religious society.
