Se orienta al autor en el formato, estilo, ilustraciones y trata de servir como modelo a seguir. El resumen debe ser claro, descriptivo y no mayor de 15 líneas (incluyendo texto y palabras claves). The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between block time and final perform... more The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between block time and final performance for each sex in 50-m and 100-m individual freestyle, distinguishing between classification (1st to 3rd, 4th to 8th, 9th to 16th) and type of starting platform (old and new) in international competitions. Twenty-six international competitions covering a 13-year period (2000-2012) were analysed retrospectively. The data corresponded to a total of 1657 swimmers' competition histories. A two-way ANOVA (sex x classification) was performed for each event and starting platform with the Bonferroni post-hoc test, and another two-way ANOVA for sex and starting platform (sex x starting platform). Pearson's simple correlation coefficient was used to determine correlations between the block time and the final performance. The purpose of the present paper is to synthesise a number of scientific contributions of our res... more The purpose of the present paper is to synthesise a number of scientific contributions of our research group, into a coherent corpus of knowledge related to swimming biophysics, specially centred on the availability and use of energy in swimming. After an introductory part that intends to underline the relevance of this approach base on the conceptualization of the swimmer, and swimming action itself, as a thermodynamic system and its mechanical output, we will survey a number of studies and respective contributions for a more advanced understanding of swimming performance, that can be transferred into training and enhancement of swimmers' working capacity. Most of the studies referred were conducted over samples of swimmers of both genders and of different types, from university/participative swimmers to Portuguese elite swimmers, crossing the large population of trained national level swimmers. The purpose of the study was to obtain the slope and y-intercept of the regression between race c... more The purpose of the study was to obtain the slope and y-intercept of the regression between race component times and race time for a group of top level female swimmers (the best 16 times) in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. All the 50, 100 and 200 m events were analyzed in this study. A multi-camera video recording system (7 cameras) was located on the catwalk 18m above the center lanes of the pool. The regression and correlation coefficients were significant in 78% of the races analyzed, excluded stroke frequency, stroke length and stroke index. The quality of the swimmers analyzed enabled the calculation of the recommended times in each phase in relation to race time. This information may allow top level swimmers to train specifically in their weakest race component.
