This paper offers a comparative analysis of two characters belonging to the tradition of empowere... more This paper offers a comparative analysis of two characters belonging to the tradition of empowered “spinster” in children’s fiction, namely Mary Poppins and Ms Wiz, from the perspective of gender politics and child/adult interactions. A distinction is made between the figure portrayed in P. L. Travers’ texts and the Disney film starring Julie Andrews, which turned the magic nanny into a cultural icon. These two renderings of the powerful, single woman, in turn, are contrasted with Terence Blacker’s postmodern depiction of the good witch in the “Ms Wiz” series, with a view to tracing the evolution of the ostracised female wizard, a character inherited from folklore that has its origin in the Great Mother archetype. As is demonstrated, each representation of the supernatural woman modifies the manner in which the feminine influences the patriarchal order.
En este trabajo abordamos las posibilidades de explotación que ofrece DublUners y en concreto la ... more En este trabajo abordamos las posibilidades de explotación que ofrece DublUners y en concreto la historia corta "Eveline", como texto literario susceptible de ser utilizado en el aula de inglés. Nuestro estudio se plantea desde la necesidad de introducir en la clase de idioma extranjero algunas de las obras de los autores más representativos de la literatura en lengua inglesa, que a su vez permitan ser adaptadas a un perfil de alumnado intermedio/avanzado. Consideramos que el acercamiento a estos autores, que constituyen parte integrante de la cultura de la lengua meta -y en cuyas obras se refleja dicha cultura-, es una tarea considerablemente enriquecedora, especialmente con vistas a nuestro alumnado: estudiantes de Magisterio -especialidad lengua extranjera. Nuestro estudio, sin embargo, es aplicable en otros niveles. La metodología utilizada va orientada a integrar objetivos en torno a la competencia comunicativa y el desarrollo lingüístico con aspectos relativos a la apreciación estética y al análisis de textos.
