The seasonal movement and migration of birds is one of the main causes of the dispersal of ticks and tick-borne pathogens. Therefore, identification of ticks associated with migratory birds is a fundamental step to understand the ecology of ticks infesting birds and evaluate their potential as vectors of zoonotic diseases. In this article, we provided a brief review for capturing migrating birds and examining them for ticks.

Mites and chewing lice have an important role as bird ectoparasites, and they are frequently found on birds. Chewing lice are permanent parasites which complete their life cycle on the body of the host and feed on feathers, skin or skin debris, and blood (Johnson and Clayton, 2003). So far, more than 5500 chewing louse species have been described, and around 4000 of them are reported as accepted (Price et al., 2003). Approximately 100 louse species from about 150 bird species have been recorded in Turkey in recent studies (

Fish species form its half part (51.74%) with 530 marine and 402 inland fish species. However, the total number is 894, since 38 of them are living in salty, brackish, and freshwater. At the class level, Petromyzonti is represented by 4, Elasmobranchii by 65, Holocephali by 1, Actinopteri by 824, Amphibia by 36, Reptilia by 140, Aves by 485, and Mammalia by 173 species. A total number of 189 inland fish—1 Petromyzonti and 188 Actinopteri—13 amphibian, 20 reptile, and 5 mammal species are endemic to Turkey. The endemism rate out of the total vertebrate species is 13.14%. According to the given conservation status, at least five species are extinct, and 215 species are globally threatened.

Under rapid climate change, protected area (PA) networks need to be able to accommodate climate-driven range shifts in wildlife if they are to continue to be effective in the future. Thus, we investigated geographical variation in the relationship between local temperature anomaly and the abundance of 61 waterbird species during the wintering season across Europe and North Africa during 1990-2015. We also compared the spatio-temporal effects on abundance of sites designated as PAs, Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs), both, or neither designation (Unlisted). Waterbird abundance was positively correlated with temperature anomaly, with this pattern being strongest towards north and east Europe. Waterbird abundance was higher inside IBAs, whether they were legally protected or not. Trends in waterbird abundance were also consistently more positive inside both protected and unprotected IBAs across the whole study region, and were positive in Unlisted wetlands in southwestern Europe and North Africa. These results suggest that IBAs are important sites for wintering waterbirds, but also that populations are shifting to unprotected wetlands (some of which are IBAs). Such IBAs may therefore represent robust candidate sites to expand the network of legally protected wetlands under climate change in northeastern Europe. These results underscore the need for monitoring to understand how the effectiveness of site networks is changing under climate change.

This finding suggests a role for birds in the ecology of the Alkhurma hemorrhagic fever virus and a potential mechanism for dissemination to novel regions. Increased surveillance is warranted.

We analysed the rectrices of first-year red-breasted flycatchers characterized by a black-and-white colouration, which gave the opportunity to examine the content of elements in two aspects: (i) quantitative distribution of elements depending on the analysed part of the feathers; and (ii) direct imaging of elements in the context of variation in feather colouration (blackeumelanin pigment and whitefree of pigmentation). The results show that distributions of Ca, Cu, Mg, and Zn in the feather shaft were related to melanin pigmentationconcentrations of these elements were significantly higher within black parts. Furthermore, the highest concentrations of Al, Ba, Mn, Pb and Sr were recorded at the end of a shaftthe oldest part of the feathers analysedwhich may be connected with the time and dynamic of nestling plumage development.

However, employing this technique on a continental scale is prohibitively expensive. This study explores the utility of stable isotope ratios in feathers in examining both the distances traveled by migratory birds and variation in migration behavior. We compared the satellite-derived movement data of 22 ducks from 8 species captured at wintering areas in Bangladesh, Turkey, and Hong Kong with deuterium ratios (δD) of these and other individuals captured at the same locations. We derived likely molting locations from the satellite tracking data and generated expected isotope ratios based on an interpolated map of δD in rainwater. Although δD was correlated with the distance between wintering and molting locations, surprisingly, measured δD values were not correlated with either expected values o...

Birds from the western extreme of the breeding range migrating to and from the wintering grounds utilise a large longitudinal component en route that is not typical of the majority of European passerines. Therefore, it is one of the lesser-known species in Europe with respect to migration and biometrics. The aim of this study is to describe the numbers, phenology and biometry of the red-breasted flycatcher in relation to age, sex and migration season at a stopover site in northern Turkey. The number of individuals ringed in autumn was six times higher than in the spring passage. Furthermore, the period of the spring passage was shorter than in autumn, and in spring males migrate six days earlier than females and juveniles; no such differences were found in autumn. Moreover, migrants carried more fuel reserves in spring tha...

For example, among many others, birds commonly forage in association with large mammals, including livestock, but so far no similar relationship has been described for amphibians. In this note we describe the association between the Marsh Frog ( Pelophylax ridibundus ) and the Anatolian Water Buffalo ( Bubalus bubalis ) in Turkey and provide possible explanations for the existence of direct relations between these representatives of two vertebrate classes. We hope that our note stimulates future research on this subject.

Several chewing lice species have been identified on Turkish bird species, such as Cuclotogaster heterographus (Nitzsch [in Giebel], 1866 on Pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) [20], Mulcticola hypoleucus (Denny, 1842) on Nightjars (Caprimulgus europaeus) [18] and Brueelia nebulosa (Burmeister, 1838), Menacanthus eurysternus (Burmeister, 1838), Myrsidea cucullaris (Nitzsch, 1818) and Sturnidoecus sturni (Schrank, 1776) on Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) [21]. Aksin [6] reported Cuclotogaster cinereus (Nitzsch, 1866), Goniodes astrocephalus (Burmeister, 1838) and Menacanthus abdominalis (Piaget, 1880) on Common Quails (Coturnix coturnix) for the first time in Turkey. In a study performed on Lake Kuyucuk in Kars [22], Charadriiform birds were examined, and 88% of them were infested with lice. In this study, 20 lice species were reported for the first time from...
