When I first agreed to speak, I had the idea that I could use this paper to develop some ideas around a topic other than sexual violence. I also thought I was going to write a different paper to the one I have today, indeed I have to admit to having changed the title slight from a very political "act" to a very political "moment" and I hope you will understand why by the end of the paper.

This paper seeks to explore some of what we can learn from looking at adult women’s stories of their experiences of disclosing childhood sexual abuse. The research upon which the paper is based is an inter-disciplinary analysis of “what happens” when women disclose child sexual abuse to others over the life course. A socially aware understanding of the meaning of narrative and storytelling has become of key importance in this research and begins to offer new ways in which to develop research on sexually abusive experiences which broadens the agenda of research on childhood sexual abuse. In particular understanding narrative has offered new ways of accessing and understanding issues relating to later life (that is, post-childhood) for women who have experienced childhood sexual abuse.

Introduction The aim of this special issue of the Journal of International Women's Studies (JIWS) is to showcase the winning and shortlisted entries for the 1st Annual Essay Competition, run by the Women's Studies Network (UK) Association (WSN) in 2002. The WSN aims to promote women's studies, feminist research and teaching both nationally and internationally, and the publication of the essays in JIWS constitutes a valuable opportunity, through its international readership, to develop new and productive points of connection between those working in this field. This study explored Nicholls' 1984 Goal Perspective Theory, which refers to the individuals' motivation to learn or engage in activities; this motivation stems from their personal set of beliefs and reflects the reasons they take part in the activities that they do.
