Apparently Chrome came up with a fix for this spec issue in 2015 and implemented it in Chrome, but Ian never changed the spec. I wonder what other browsers do.

@foolip, perhaps you could work on a PR/tests? Or if you've moved on from media too much these days, perhaps re-summarize the issue and your proposed solution? It's a bit of a longer thread.
