GitHub Organizational Operations & Principles Guide

🚧 Work in Progress — This project is in early development.
Contributions and feedback are welcome.

About

GitHub Organizational Operations & Principles Guide is a public, vendor-neutral handbook for adopting and operating GitHub at any scale — from a single Organization to a full Enterprise account.

This guide complements official GitHub documentation by providing:

  • Principles (Bible): Why governance, safety, agility, and sustainability matter.
  • Operations (Framework): How to apply these principles in daily practice.
  • Do & Don’t: Practical patterns and anti-patterns observed in real-world adoption.

Scope

The guide covers the full lifecycle:

  1. Adoption — Introducing GitHub and Copilot in a safe, staged manner.
  2. Operations — Day-to-day governance, compliance, and security practices.
  3. Evolution — Scaling from small teams to enterprise-wide use, incorporating new features.

It is intended for:

  • Administrators setting up and managing Organizations/Enterprise accounts
  • Team leads and developers navigating GitHub adoption
  • Compliance and governance officers ensuring safe and sustainable use

Why another guide?

Official GitHub docs provide excellent references.
This guide adds value by:

  • Emphasizing psychological safety and clarity for teams unfamiliar with Git/GitHub.
  • Offering a Bible ⇔ Framework dual structure: principles to return to, and practical steps to follow.
  • Providing Do & Don’t examples to reduce trial-and-error in large organizations.
  • Framing the journey as Adoption → Operations → Evolution, not just one-time onboarding.
