GitHub Organizational Operations & Principles Guide is a public, vendor-neutral handbook for adopting and operating GitHub at any scale — from a single Organization to a full Enterprise account.
This guide complements official GitHub documentation by providing:
- Principles (Bible): Why governance, safety, agility, and sustainability matter.
- Operations (Framework): How to apply these principles in daily practice.
- Do & Don’t: Practical patterns and anti-patterns observed in real-world adoption.
The guide covers the full lifecycle:
- Adoption — Introducing GitHub and Copilot in a safe, staged manner.
- Operations — Day-to-day governance, compliance, and security practices.
- Evolution — Scaling from small teams to enterprise-wide use, incorporating new features.
It is intended for:
- Administrators setting up and managing Organizations/Enterprise accounts
- Team leads and developers navigating GitHub adoption
- Compliance and governance officers ensuring safe and sustainable use
Official GitHub docs provide excellent references.
This guide adds value by:
- Emphasizing psychological safety and clarity for teams unfamiliar with Git/GitHub.
- Offering a Bible ⇔ Framework dual structure: principles to return to, and practical steps to follow.
- Providing Do & Don’t examples to reduce trial-and-error in large organizations.
- Framing the journey as Adoption → Operations → Evolution, not just one-time onboarding.
We welcome issues, discussions, and pull requests.
