I think the issue is best described in the following image:

Basically, bold text-mode subscripts have very wonky positioning. This issue does not affect superscripts or math-mode subscripts.

Additionally, I'm not very sure but it seems like even R#sub[peak] has inconsistent spacing in between letters.
