Hardware Assembly

Assuming your a fan of the project and 'REALLY WANT ONE!' you should probably know how to assemble it.

Lets suppose, you got my board fabricated, used my designs to get the case made and sourced all the parts. Now what? Get to work!

*For this reason, I made it a point to use parts in the assembly that were easy to source. Well, I made sure all parts were easy to source, I hate looking for end of life parts, it makes for a bad time.

Assembling the PCB

If your putting this to together, your gonna be dealing with SMD components, there is only one QFN package on the whole board and all of the passive stuff is 0805. Its not out of the realm of doable. I assembled mine at home, I'm sure you can too. Well maybe, I have no idea what your home life is like. Maybe you have a girlfriend who keeps complaining about that 300.00 dollar microscope you bought. (Ha, ha.)

Helpful Hints

  • Use a microscope, I'm not kidding, I'm really not.
  • Assemble the power section first and test it.
  • Solder the 40pin header onto the PI first, not the board.
  • Make sure you soldered the 40pin header the right way.
  • The PI should be the last thing added to the board.
  • Add all the tactile switches before the LED's.
  • Make sure you solder the 14 segment displays onto the board before you add the PI spacer and PI.
  • Slide the PI spacer under the PI before you attach it to the board, you only get one shot at this, it cant be taken back out, or added latter.

Assembling the Case

Holy shit! your serious about finishing this.

So this was my favorite part, being like 99% done. All of the laser cut parts should fit together like a glove, I had no problems buttoning everything up. Just make sure you follow the assembly guide pictures and pay close attention to the 3D model. Those 'extra' 12 washers you thought you ordered for no reason, they go on the top and bottom to protect the graphic overlay and the acrylic from the screws.

Helpful Hints

  • Don't eat the top hat buttons, I know you really want to, but don't, even if there are extras.
  • Assemble the unit from the bottom up. I attached tape to the bottom to keep the screws in while I was assembling things.
  • Don't forget to remove all of the protective tape from the acrylic.
  • Tape the battery to the PCB with REALLY thin tape, or don't, that's how tight the tolerance is, friction fit.
  • Wipe down the top acrylic piece with isopropyl alcohol before you attach the graphic overlay.

Guess Your Done

Or you have a PCB embedded in the wall of your kitchen.
