This PR addresses the checkpoint based on series in memory proposal.

PR adds CheckpointFromInMemorySeries option for agent.Options to enable a faster checkpoint implementation that skips segment re-read and just uses in-memory data instead.

The new options can be set with --storage.agent.checkpoint-from-in-memory-series and --storage.agent.checkpoint-batch-size command line flags.

PR is done in cooperation with @kgeckhart.

Public API

In addition to agent.Checkpoint function, this PR introduces 2 interfaces consumed by the function:

ActiveSeries
DeletedSeries

The reason to use interfaces instead of concrete types is to allow downstream projects like Grafana Alloy to use agent.Checkpoint with their own TSDB implementations.

Performance

Here is performance comparison of old wlog.Checkpoint and the new agent.Checkpoint:

BenchmarkCheckpoint results. Diff is done using the benchstat tool.

To replicate a worst case scenario and focus on I/O bound load, I had to adjust a segment size to lowest acceptable value (32KiB) and increase a number of series.

Thanks for calling this out, when I was looking at this originally I thought we were taking a write lock on the db during truncate but it's only a read lock. We can look at adjusting the iterator to be batch based which would allow us to hold the locks long enough to produce a batch for IO purposes and come back. Some values might be more up to date than others in the checkpoint but it won't really hurt anything.

We can look at adjusting the iterator to be batch based which would allow us to hold the locks long enough to produce a batch for IO purposes and come back. Some values might be more up to date than others in the checkpoint but it won't really hurt anything.

I think in principal we don't want to be holding a lock and do anything that's related to I/O. I'd also change to a way of working where you pass batches of series to the flusher and not individual series and yield all locks. The checkpoint isn't point in time copy of the memory state in the first place, since it's not holding a mutex over the whole thing. The appender can add series in the mean time and update lastTS as well . So I also don't think it would change the correctness. (checked with AI as well).
