whenever I click on the file menu (to exit processing or access a saved sketch) I get a massive lock-up, spinning wheel for about 10 seconds.

I used to get a similar freeze when accessing the sketchbook from the file menu (possible because it's large) main;y because it had to scan for changes or something whenever the folders changed.

n.b. this lag would occur even when the files had only been adjusted through processing (i.e. using 'save as')

this is with processing 2.08 alpha
mac OSX 10.7.4
