Summary

  • use the CFG unreachable continuation after a bare return; to detect code made reachable by removing it
  • keep terminal continuations like break; and bare return; from making the original return useful
  • add a regression case for switch branches that continue with additional statements

Fixes #23978

Pull request overview

This PR fixes a false positive in the eslint/no-useless-return linter rule for return; statements inside switch cases where the return prevents subsequent statements in the same case from executing (issue #23978). It refines the rule’s CFG-based “reachable code after return” detection to properly account for unreachable continuations and finally execution semantics.

Changes:

  • Use CFG EdgeType::Unreachable continuations from a bare return; to detect code that would become reachable if the return were removed.
  • Avoid counting terminal continuations (e.g. break;, bare return;) and finally body statements as making an otherwise-redundant return; “useful”.
  • Add regression tests covering switch-branch continuation and try/finally scenarios, and update snapshots accordingly.
