Summary

Fixes #53207.
Related to #45516.

  • reload locked auth-profile writes from disk instead of the runtime snapshot so live gateway usage/cooldown saves stop reverting fresher disk credentials
  • pass the resolved agentDir through models auth paste-token so manual token paste writes into the right auth store
  • add regressions for stale runtime overwrite and agent-scoped token paste, and document the fix in the changelog

Testing

  • NODENV_VERSION=24.13.0 pnpm test -- src/agents/auth-profiles.markauthprofilefailure.test.ts src/commands/models/auth.test.ts
  • NODENV_VERSION=24.13.0 pnpm build

🔒 Aisle Security Analysis

We found 2 potential security issue(s) in this PR:

# Severity Title
1 🟡 Medium Symlink/TOCTOU file clobber when writing auth-profiles.json (agentDir-controlled path)
2 🔵 Low Prototype pollution via proto/constructor keys when loading auth-profiles.json

1. 🟡 Symlink/TOCTOU file clobber when writing auth-profiles.json (agentDir-controlled path)

Property Value
Severity Medium
CWE CWE-59
Location src/infra/json-file.ts:16-22

Description

The auth profile store is written using saveJsonFile() which directly writeFileSync()s to a caller-provided path and then chmodSync()s it. There are no checks that the destination is a regular file (not a symlink), and the write is not atomic.

Impact if an attacker can influence agentDir (CLI arg/config/plugin input) or can replace auth-profiles.json inside an agent directory:

  • Symlink clobber (CWE-59): If auth-profiles.json is replaced with a symlink to another file, saveJsonFile() will follow the symlink and overwrite the target with credential JSON, and then chmod it to 0600.
  • TOCTOU: ensureAuthStoreFile() checks existence (existsSync) and later writes, allowing a race where the file is swapped for a symlink between the check and the write.
  • Non-atomic write: writeFileSync() can leave partial/corrupt JSON on crash/kill; combined with locking only via a sidecar .lock, this doesn’t prevent same-user tampering of the target path.

Vulnerable code:

// src/infra/json-file.ts
fs.writeFileSync(pathname, `${JSON.stringify(data, null, 2)}\n`, "utf8");
fs.chmodSync(pathname, 0o600);

This is reachable from auth store writers, e.g. saveAuthProfileStore() and locked updates (updateAuthProfileStoreWithLock()), both using a path derived from agentDir (resolveAuthStorePath(agentDir)).

Recommendation

Harden writes against symlink/path attacks and make them atomic:

  1. Reject non-regular files before writing:
    • lstat the path if it exists and fail if it’s a symlink.
    • Optionally also verify the parent directory is not symlinked (use realpath and enforce expected base dir).
  2. Write atomically: write to a temp file in the same directory, fsync, then rename.
  3. Use no-follow semantics where supported:
    • On Linux/macOS you can open with O_NOFOLLOW via fs.open flags (Node exposes fs.constants.O_NOFOLLOW).

Example (sketch):

import fs from "node:fs";
import path from "node:path";

export function saveJsonFileSafe(pathname: string, data: unknown) {
  const dir = path.dirname(pathname);
  fs.mkdirSync(dir, { recursive: true, mode: 0o700 });// Refuse to follow symlinks
  try {
    const st = fs.lstatSync(pathname);
    if (st.isSymbolicLink() || !st.isFile()) {
      throw new Error(`Refusing to write non-regular file: ${pathname}`);
    }
  } catch (e: any) {
    if (e?.code !== "ENOENT") throw e;
  }

  const tmp = path.join(dir, `.tmp-${process.pid}-${Date.now()}.json`);
  fs.writeFileSync(tmp, `${JSON.stringify(data, null, 2)}\n`, { mode: 0o600 });
  fs.renameSync(tmp, pathname);
  fs.chmodSync(pathname, 0o600);
}

Also consider constraining/normalizing agentDir inputs to an expected base directory to reduce path traversal risk.

2. 🔵 Prototype pollution via proto/constructor keys when loading auth-profiles.json

Property Value
Severity Low
CWE CWE-1321
Location src/agents/auth-profiles/store.ts:243-253

Description

coerceAuthStore() loads auth-profiles.json with JSON.parse() and then copies entries from the untrusted profiles object into a plain {} using attacker-controlled keys.

Because JavaScript treats the special key __proto__ (and related keys like constructor) as mutating an object’s prototype, a malicious auth-profiles.json containing a profile id such as "__proto__" can prototype-pollute the resulting normalized object.

Impact:

  • Polluted prototypes can cause unexpected behavior in later authorization / profile-selection logic that iterates, checks properties, or merges objects.
  • Can lead to crashes/DoS or logic manipulation depending on how polluted properties are used elsewhere.

Vulnerable code:

const normalized: Record<string, AuthProfileCredential> = {};
for (const [key, value] of Object.entries(profiles)) {
  ...
  normalized[key] = parsed.credential;
}

Recommendation

Harden all objects that ingest JSON object keys.

  1. Build dictionaries with a null prototype, and/or explicitly block dangerous keys:
const DANGEROUS_KEYS = new Set(["__proto__", "prototype", "constructor"]);

const normalized: Record<string, AuthProfileCredential> = Object.create(null);
for (const [key, value] of Object.entries(profiles)) {
  if (DANGEROUS_KEYS.has(key)) continue;
  const parsed = parseCredentialEntry(value);
  if (!parsed.ok) continue;
  normalized[key] = parsed.credential;
}
  1. Apply the same treatment anywhere else you materialize records from untrusted JSON keys (e.g., order, lastGood, usageStats, legacy stores, merges).

Greptile Summary

This PR fixes two related credential-clobbering bugs in the auth store: live gateway usage/cooldown writes were overwriting freshly saved credentials with stale in-memory snapshots, and models auth paste-token was writing tokens to the default store instead of the resolved agent-scoped store.

Key changes:

  • store.ts: Inside updateAuthProfileStoreWithLock, replace ensureAuthProfileStore (which may return a stale runtime snapshot) with loadAuthProfileStoreForAgent (which always reads the freshest on-disk state via mtime-validated caching). This is the minimal, correct fix — the file lock prevents concurrent writes, and the mtime cache ensures we see any writes made since the snapshot was taken.
  • auth.ts: Add resolveModelsAuthContext() to modelsAuthPasteTokenCommand and thread agentDir through to upsertAuthProfile, so manual token pastes land in the correct agent store.
  • Tests: Regression tests cover both the stale-overwrite scenario and the agent-scoped paste path, and they correctly exercise the new replaceRuntimeAuthProfileStoreSnapshots/clearRuntimeAuthProfileStoreSnapshots test helpers.

Confidence Score: 5/5

  • This PR is safe to merge — it addresses a well-scoped regression with targeted, correct fixes and proper regression coverage.
  • Both changes are minimal and well-reasoned: the store fix correctly swaps a snapshot-returning function for a disk-reading one inside the file lock, and the agentDir threading in the paste-token path is a straightforward missing-argument fix. Regression tests validate both scenarios. The only non-blocking concern is a minor double call to resolveModelsAuthContext when modelsAuthAddCommand delegates to modelsAuthPasteTokenCommand, which is a performance nit and not a correctness issue.
  • No files require special attention.

Comment:
**Redundant `resolveModelsAuthContext` call when invoked from `modelsAuthAddCommand`**

`modelsAuthAddCommand` already calls `resolveModelsAuthContext()` earlier (line 399) and then delegates to `modelsAuthPasteTokenCommand` at line 493. This means the full context resolution — including `loadValidConfigOrThrow` and `resolvePluginProviders` — runs twice.

This is not a correctness issue, but it's wasteful if `resolvePluginProviders` is expensive. Consider either accepting `agentDir` as an optional parameter to `modelsAuthPasteTokenCommand`, or extracting a lightweight `resolveAgentDirOnly` helper so only config + agent-dir resolution runs in the paste path.

How can I resolve this? If you propose a fix, please make it concise.

P2 Badge Preserve merged profiles in lock-protected auth updates

Switching updateAuthProfileStoreWithLock to loadAuthProfileStoreForAgent drops the main-agent merge that ensureAuthProfileStore provided for subagents, so updater callbacks now see only the subagent file. In markAuthProfileFailure/markAuthProfileGood (src/agents/auth-profiles/usage.ts, src/agents/auth-profiles/profiles.ts), a missing profile makes the updater return false, but the non-null store return is still treated as success, so inherited main-agent profiles silently stop receiving cooldown/last-good updates. This regresses subagents that rely on merged main credentials (for example, when the main agent gains a new profile after the subagent store already exists).

* fix(telegram): make buttons schema optional in message tool

The Telegram plugin injects a `buttons` property into the message tool
schema via `createMessageToolButtonsSchema()`, but without wrapping it
in `Type.Optional()`. This causes TypeBox to include `buttons` in the
JSON Schema `required` array.

In isolated sessions (e.g. cron jobs) where no `currentChannel` is set,
all plugin schemas are merged into the message tool. When the LLM calls
the message tool without a `buttons` parameter, AJV validation fails
with: `buttons: must have required property 'buttons'`.

Wrap the buttons schema in `Type.Optional()` so it is not required.

When `replyLike.text` or `replyLike.caption` is an unexpected
non-string value (edge case from some Telegram API responses),
the reply body was coerced to "[object Object]" via string
concatenation. Add a `typeof === "string"` guard to gracefully
fall back to empty string, matching the existing pattern used
for `quoteText` in the same function.

* feat(telegram): add asDocument param to message tool

Adds `asDocument` as a user-facing alias for the existing `forceDocument`
parameter in the message tool. When set to `true`, media files (images,
videos, GIFs) are sent via `sendDocument` instead of `sendPhoto`/
`sendVideo`/`sendAnimation`, preserving the original file quality
without Telegram compression.

This is useful when agents need to deliver high-resolution images or
uncompressed files to users via Telegram.

`asDocument` is intentionally an alias rather than a replacement — the
existing `forceDocument` continues to work unchanged.

Changes:
