Summary

Describe the problem and fix in 2–5 bullets:

  • Problem: pnpm gateway:watch restarted the gateway for any watched workspace change, including *.test.ts edits.
  • Why it matters: test-file churn interrupts gateway dev loops even when runtime code/config did not change; agents often update tests after making code changes - this can be disruptive if a developer has already started testing the logic change on the gateway and the gateway suddenly restarts because a .test.ts file was updated.
  • What changed: replaced Node --watch-path restart control with a chokidar watcher over the same watch roots (src, tsconfig.json, package.json) and ignored *.test.ts restart events.
  • What changed: added tests for ignore behavior, restart behavior, signal shutdown, and watcher-error cleanup.
  • What did NOT change (scope boundary): no gateway runtime feature/config behavior changed; no docs/config format/API changes.

  • Known bad symptoms reviewers should watch for: gateway not restarting on non-test edits, or lingering child process after watcher errors.

Risks and Mitigations

  • Risk: ignore pattern is intentionally narrow and only excludes .test.ts.
    • Mitigation: kept watch roots unchanged and added targeted tests to guard regressions.
  • Risk: watcher lifecycle could leave child process running on internal watcher failure.
    • Mitigation: explicit child kill on watcher error + test coverage.

1. 🔵 Unthrottled chokidar-triggered restart loop can cause local resource exhaustion (restart storm)

Property Value
Severity Low
CWE CWE-400
Location scripts/watch-node.mjs:91-107

Description

The new chokidar-based watch logic restarts the child process on every add/change/unlink event with no debounce, rate limiting, or backoff.

This can lead to a denial of service (CPU/process churn) in scenarios where file events can be triggered rapidly, including:

  • A noisy filesystem (e.g., generated files written under watched paths)
  • Shared/CI workspaces where another actor/process can write into the working tree
  • Malicious repository contents (e.g., a symlinked subtree under src/ combined with chokidar's default followSymlinks: true) expanding the watched surface and amplifying event volume

Vulnerable behavior:

  • Any filesystem event triggers requestRestart() which sets restartRequested = true and signals the child
  • On exit, the child is immediately respawned if restartRequested was set
  • No minimum restart interval / max restart count is enforced

Vulnerable code:

const requestRestart = (changedPath) => {
  if (shuttingDown || isIgnoredWatchPath(changedPath)) {
    return;
  }
  if (!watchProcess) {
    startRunner();
    return;
  }
  restartRequested = true;
  if (typeof watchProcess.kill === "function") {
    watchProcess.kill(WATCH_RESTART_SIGNAL);
  }
};

watcher.on("add", requestRestart);
watcher.on("change", requestRestart);
watcher.on("unlink", requestRestart);

Recommendation

Add restart debouncing and rate limiting/backoff, and consider hardening chokidar options to reduce unintended watch expansion.

Example debounced restart (single restart after a quiet period):

let restartTimer = null;
const RESTART_DEBOUNCE_MS = 250;

const requestRestart = (changedPath) => {
  if (shuttingDown || isIgnoredWatchPath(changedPath)) return;
  restartRequested = true;

  clearTimeout(restartTimer);
  restartTimer = setTimeout(() => {
    if (!watchProcess) {
      startRunner();
      return;
    }
    watchProcess.kill(WATCH_RESTART_SIGNAL);
  }, RESTART_DEBOUNCE_MS);
};

Optionally enforce a maximum restart rate / exponential backoff:

  • Track restart timestamps
  • If restarts exceed N within T seconds, delay the next restart or exit with an error

Chokidar hardening to reduce symlink/path surprises:

chokidar.watch(watchPaths, {
  ignoreInitial: true,
  followSymlinks: false,// optionally: depth: 10,// optionally: ignored: [/node_modules/, /dist/ , ...]
})

Greptile Summary

This PR replaces Node's built-in --watch-path restart mechanism in scripts/watch-node.mjs with an explicit chokidar watcher, adding fine-grained control over which file changes trigger a gateway restart. Test files (*.test.ts, *.test.tsx, test-helpers.ts) are now ignored — matching the existing exclusion list in run-node.mjs's isExcludedSource — while all other watched paths (src, tsconfig.json, package.json) continue to trigger restarts.

Key points:

  • Ignore patterns are correctly aligned with run-node.mjs's isExcludedSource — all three patterns (.test.ts, .test.tsx, test-helpers.ts) are covered in isIgnoredWatchPath and verified by tests.
  • Behavioral change in process lifecycle: the outer watch process previously exited whenever run-node.mjs exited (crash or clean exit), propagating the child's exit code. Now the watcher only exits on SIGINT, SIGTERM, or a watcher error — if run-node.mjs crashes without a pending restart, the process stays alive waiting for the next file-change event. This is appropriate for interactive watch mode but is worth knowing if the watch process is wrapped by any automation.
  • Defense-in-depth: isIgnoredWatchPath is checked both in chokidar's ignored option (prevents events from ever firing) and again in requestRestart (safety net). Redundant but harmless.
  • Test coverage is thorough and the async timing model (microtask for mock exit, setImmediate as the await boundary) is correct.

Confidence Score: 4/5

  • Safe to merge — no runtime behavior changes to the gateway itself, and the developer-visible watch behavior matches the stated intent.
  • The implementation is clean and well-tested. The one notable behavioral difference (watcher no longer exits when the child exits naturally) is intentional for watch mode and poses no production risk. Ignore patterns are fully aligned with run-node.mjs. Score of 4 rather than 5 to acknowledge the process-lifecycle change as a non-trivial semantic shift worth tracking.
  • No files require special attention.

Incomplete ignore pattern vs run-node.mjs exclusions

run-node.mjs's isExcludedSource excludes three patterns from triggering a rebuild:

  • *.test.ts
  • *.test.tsx
  • test-helpers.ts

But isIgnoredWatchPath here only ignores *.test.ts. This means editing a .test.tsx file or any test-helpers.ts will still fire requestRestart and kill/restart the gateway, even though run-node.mjs itself would see those files as non-build-affecting (and skip the rebuild). The result is a spurious process restart with no actual code change — the same disruption the PR is trying to prevent.

Consider aligning the two:

Suggested change
const isIgnoredWatchPath = (filePath) => normalizePath(filePath).endsWith(".test.ts");
const isIgnoredWatchPath = (filePath) => {
const normalized = normalizePath(filePath);
return (
normalized.endsWith(".test.ts") ||
normalized.endsWith(".test.tsx") ||
normalized.endsWith("test-helpers.ts")
);
};

Comment:
**Incomplete ignore pattern vs `run-node.mjs` exclusions**

`run-node.mjs`'s `isExcludedSource` excludes three patterns from triggering a rebuild:
- `*.test.ts`
- `*.test.tsx`
- `test-helpers.ts`

But `isIgnoredWatchPath` here only ignores `*.test.ts`. This means editing a `.test.tsx` file or any `test-helpers.ts` will still fire `requestRestart` and kill/restart the gateway, even though `run-node.mjs` itself would see those files as non-build-affecting (and skip the rebuild). The result is a spurious process restart with no actual code change — the same disruption the PR is trying to prevent.

Consider aligning the two:

```suggestion
const isIgnoredWatchPath = (filePath) => {
  const normalized = normalizePath(filePath);
  return (
    normalized.endsWith(".test.ts") ||
    normalized.endsWith(".test.tsx") ||
    normalized.endsWith("test-helpers.ts")
  );
};
```

How can I resolve this? If you propose a fix, please make it concise.

P2 Badge Handle synchronous watcher.close return values

settle assumes watcher.close() returns a promise and chains .catch, but the watcher contract in scripts/watch-node.d.mts allows close to return void. When a synchronous close implementation is passed via createWatcher (or a watcher API changes to sync close), watcher.close?.().catch?.(...) throws TypeError, which can reject runWatchMain during SIGINT/SIGTERM/error handling instead of returning the expected exit code.

P2 Badge Log watcher errors before exiting

When chokidar emits an error (for example, ENOSPC from OS watch limits), this handler exits with code 1 but discards the error object entirely, so pnpm gateway:watch can fail without any actionable diagnostic output. That makes recovery difficult in exactly the cases where developers need context, and this regression is introduced by the new explicit error listener that swallows the event payload.

P2 Badge Resolve watch paths against configured cwd

The new chokidar setup watches deps.watchPaths without binding them to deps.cwd, so relative paths like src are resolved from the parent process working directory instead of the runner's configured cwd. This regresses runWatchMain({ cwd: ... }): the child runs in one tree (cwd: deps.cwd in spawn) while file watching can happen in another, causing missed restarts (or unrelated restarts) whenever this helper is invoked with a non-default cwd.

P2 Badge Bind chokidar watch roots to the configured cwd

The watcher is created from deps.watchPaths as-is, with no cwd option and no path resolution against deps.cwd, while the child process is launched with cwd: deps.cwd. For relative paths like src, runWatchMain({ cwd: ... }) can watch one directory tree and run the gateway in another, causing missed (or unrelated) restarts when this helper is used with a non-default cwd.

* feat: make compaction timeout configurable via agents.defaults.compaction.timeoutSeconds (openclaw#46889)

* feat: make compaction timeout configurable via agents.defaults.compaction.timeoutSeconds

The hardcoded 5-minute (300s) compaction timeout causes large sessions
to enter a death spiral where compaction repeatedly fails and the
session grows indefinitely. This adds agents.defaults.compaction.timeoutSeconds
to allow operators to override the compaction safety timeout.

Default raised to 900s (15min) which is sufficient for sessions up to
~400k tokens. The resolved timeout is also used for the session write
lock duration so locks don't expire before compaction completes.

* fix(plugins): load bundled extensions from dist (openclaw#47560)

* fix(models): preserve stream usage compat opt-ins (openclaw#45733)

Preserves explicit `supportsUsageInStreaming` overrides from built-in provider
catalogs and user config instead of unconditionally forcing `false` on non-native
openai-completions endpoints.

Adds `applyNativeStreamingUsageCompat()` to set `supportsUsageInStreaming: true`
on ModelStudio (DashScope) and Moonshot models at config build time so their
native streaming usage works out of the box.

* fix: reset chat buffer on tool-start to prevent intermediary text accumulation

The Pi SDK resets lastStreamedAssistantCleaned between tool calls, but
the gateway chatRunState.buffers was not reset — causing mergedText to
accumulate text from ALL prior turns. The SSE subscriber (which resets
lastTextLen=0 on tool-start) then re-emitted the entire conversation.

* fix: restore Patch #4 (chat mirror) and Patch #5 (inbound push) lost in Codex merge

Patch #4: webchat-originated replies on WA-scoped sessions now mirror
to WhatsApp via sendMessageWhatsApp(). The Codex merge kept the
runContext.mirror registration but lost the delivery block.

Patch #5: inbound messages (WA/Slack/etc.) now broadcast to WS/SSE
clients via message.inbound event, restoring real-time cross-channel
message display in the webchat dashboard.

Co-authored-by: Bob

* fix: mirror delivery in emitChatFinal (embedded runner path)

The previous commit placed mirror only in the !agentRunStarted branch
of server-methods/chat.ts, but the embedded runner sets agentRunStarted=true
and delivers via emitChatFinal in server-chat.ts instead. This restores
the mirror block in the correct location — matching the alpha.

* Gateway: sync runtime post-build artifacts

* Plugins: harden context engine ownership

* fix: complete Patch #5 inbound push + fix mirror static import

- Add emitInboundMessageEvent() call in dispatch-from-config.ts (was
  only defined but never called — WA messages never reached SSE/webchat)
- Switch mirror from dynamic import() to static import (dynamic import
  failed silently in bundled build)

Co-authored-by: Bob

* fix: globalThis singleton for WA listeners to survive chunk duplication

The bundler splits active-listener.ts into a different chunk than
server-chat.ts (mirror) and auto-reply/monitor.ts (listener registration).
Static/dynamic imports resolve to different module instances, so mirror
always sees an empty listeners Map. Using globalThis ensures all chunks
share the same Map instance.

* fix: globalThis singleton for inbound event listeners (chunk duplication)

Same root cause as the WA listener fix: dispatch-from-config.ts emits
inbound events in one chunk, server.impl.ts subscribes in another.
Module-level Set gets duplicated across chunks.

Co-authored-by: Bob

* fix: emit inbound events from WA process-message path (not dispatch-from-config)

dispatch-from-config.ts is NOT in the WA message processing chain.
WA messages go through process-message.ts → provider-dispatcher.ts.
Moved emitInboundMessageEvent to process-message.ts where WA messages
are actually processed.

* fix: emit message.inbound directly on gatewayEventBus

Bypass inbound-events.ts entirely — its module-level Set suffers from
chunk duplication even with globalThis (timing/ordering issues).
gatewayEventBus already uses globalThis singleton and is proven to work

* fix(onboarding): use scoped plugin snapshots to prevent OOM on low-memory hosts

Onboarding and channel-add flows previously loaded the full plugin registry,
which caused OOM crashes on memory-constrained hosts. This patch introduces
scoped, non-activating plugin registry snapshots that load only the selected
channel plugin without replacing the running gateway's global state.

Key changes:
- Add onlyPluginIds and activate options to loadOpenClawPlugins for scoped loads
- Add suppressGlobalCommands to plugin registry to avoid leaking commands
- Replace full registry reloads in onboarding with per-channel scoped snapshots
- Validate command definitions in snapshot loads without writing global registry
- Preload configured external plugins via scoped discovery during onboarding

* fix: control UI sends correct provider prefix when switching models

The model selector was using just the model ID (e.g. "gpt-5.2") as the
option value. When sent to sessions.patch, the server would fall back to
the session's current provider ("anthropic") yielding "anthropic/gpt-5.2"
instead of "openai/gpt-5.2".

Now option values use "provider/model" format, and resolveModelOverrideValue
and resolveDefaultModelValue also return the full provider-prefixed key so
selected state stays consistent.

* fix: format default model label as 'model · provider' for consistency

The default option showed 'Default (openai/gpt-5.2)' while individual
options used the friendlier 'gpt-5.2 · openai' format.
