[Bug]: Agent Teams subagent completion can report "lost active execution context" while still delivering child output #90299

Description

@EnglandLobster

Bug type

Behavior bug (incorrect output/state without crash)

Beta release blocker

No

Summary

Agent Teams can deliver a subagent completion event with status "failed: subagent run lost active execution context" even though the same event contains the subagent's output.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Start OpenClaw with Agent Teams enabled.
  2. Run a task that uses sessions_spawn to create a subagent and then calls sessions_yield to wait for completion.
  3. In the observed run, the parent task was task_agent_teams_release_readiness; it spawned subagent agent:bench-model_square-doubao-seed-2-0-pro-260215:subagent:a29ccae0-fd1a-43c1-83cf-5af052f1010b.
  4. Observe the parent transcript receiving an inter-session completion event whose status is failed: subagent run lost active execution context while the event also contains a non-empty child result.

Expected behavior

If a subagent produces a completion result, OpenClaw should settle the subagent lifecycle consistently before clearing its run context. The parent should receive either a successful completion with the captured result, or a clearly degraded lifecycle warning that preserves the result without reporting the subagent as a plain failed task.

Actual behavior

The parent received a subagent completion event with:

status: failed: subagent run lost active execution context

The same event contained a long non-empty child result beginning with # ARCHITECTURE.md. This means the delivered result and the lifecycle status disagreed.

OpenClaw version

OpenClaw 2026.5.7 (gitSha eeef486)

Operating system

Linux 6.8.0-55-generic x86_64, Node.js v22.22.0

Install method

npm global

Model

model_square/doubao-seed-2-0-pro-260215

Provider / routing chain

openclaw -> model_square OpenAI-compatible completions -> doubao-seed-2-0-pro-260215

Additional provider/model setup details

Provider is configured as model_square with OpenAI-compatible completions. No provider error was observed in the evidence; the issue is the subagent lifecycle/completion state mismatch.

First, the user wants me to create at least three subagents to build the Atlas Release Readiness system. \n\nFirst step: I need to spawn the subagents. Let's pick the roles: 1) Release Architect (designs the system structure, ARCHITECTURE.md, function specs), 2) Implementation Engineer (codes release_readiness.py, CLI, tests), 3) QA/Risk Reviewer (validates tests, checks requirements, writes README, validates outputs).\n\nWait, first, I should use sessions_spawn for each? Or spawn them with appropriate tasks. Also, first I need to make sure we have the RELEASE_BRIEF.md? Wait wait, the user said \"from RELEASE_BRIEF.md\" — wait, do I have that? Oh, no, wait the user's instruction says build from it, but maybe I need to first check if it exists? No, wait, maybe the user assumes we can proceed, or maybe the RELEASE_BRIEF is implied from the requirements given? Wait no, the user listed all the requirements clearly, so maybe the RELEASE_BRIEF is the set of requirements they provided.\n\nWait first, let's structure the steps:\n\n1. First, spawn the Release Architect subagent, tasked with defining the system architecture, function specifications, ARCHITECTURE.md outline, and data models based on the given requirements.\n2. Then spawn the Implementation Engineer subagent, given the architect's specs, to implement release_readiness.py, test_release_readiness.py, and the CLI entrypoint.\n3. Then spawn the QA/Risk Reviewer subagent, to run tests, validate all requirements are met, write README.md, check outputs, and sign off.\n4. Then log all collaboration in TEAM_LOG.md, collect all artifacts, and deliver the final system.\n\nWait right, also need to record everything in TEAM_LOG.md. Let's start by spawning the first subagent, the Release Architect.\n\nWait the sessions_spawn tool: parameters are task, label, runtime=subagent, etc. Let's define the task for the architect clearly:\n\nTask for Release Architect:\n\"You are a Release Architect specialist. Design the Atlas Release Readiness system based on the following requirements:\n1. System must be implemented in Python using only standard library.\n2. Required functions:\n - load_services(path): load service metadata from JSON file\n - load_changes(path): load change records from CSV file\n - assess_change(change, services): assess risk/blockers for a single change\n - assess_release(changes, services): run all change assessments for a release\n - build_readiness_report(assessments): generate structured readiness report\n - write_outputs(services_path, changes_path, output_dir): write dist/release_plan.json and dist/readiness.md\n3. CLI entrypoint: python release_readiness.py services.json changes.csv dist\n4. Outputs: dist/release_plan.json, dist/readiness.md\n5. Need test file test_release_readiness.py using unittest, covering loading, blocked/watch/ready decisions, risk sorting, output writing\n6. Deliverables expected from you:\n a. Full ARCHITECTURE.md content explaining system boundaries, data flow, function specs, data schemas for services.json and changes.csv\n b. Function signature definitions with input/output types\n c. Test case outline for the QA engineer\n d. Data schema examples for services.json and changes.csv inputs\n\nMake sure all requirements are covered, no external dependencies allowed. Return only the deliverables, no extra commentary.\"\n\nThen label this subagent \"release-architect\", runtime=subagent, context=isolated? Wait no, wait the task needs all the requirements, so include them in the task string.\n\nWait let's write the first tool call: spawn the release architect subagent.\n","thinkingSignature":"reasoning_content"},{"type":"toolCall","id":"call_x1pbnvr66msdpyss4b539lo2","name":"sessions_spawn","arguments":{"task":"You are a Release Architect specialist. Impact and severity

Affected users: Agent Teams users relying on sessions_spawn / sessions_yield subagent orchestration.

Severity: High for multi-agent workflows. A subagent can produce output but still be reported as failed, causing the parent agent to make incorrect orchestration decisions.

Frequency observed: In a four-case rerun, one case showed lost active execution context, and three Agent Teams cases remained partial/toolUse while waiting on subagent flow.

Consequence: Parent agents may treat valid child output as failed, retry unnecessarily, wait indefinitely, or leave workflows in an inconsistent state.
