After #9096, we noticed that the total size of cmo and cma files
was up by 17% in our tree. This pull request tweaks Debuginfo
so that strings representing scopes (which are marshaled into
cmo and cma files) are shared.

| scopes -> String.concat "" (to_strings [] scopes)

What about using a Weak table here?

My intuition is that it would make builds non deterministic.

I don't think so: you'll still have the guarantee that equal strings are physically equal.

Sorry, I am confused: either strings may be removed from the set and some
sharing might be lost, or they are never removed and the nature of the
container does not matter.

By definition, all data marshaled to a given file remain alive until the marshaling happen (so, they won't go out of the weak table); since they will all have gone through the hash-consing (Weak.merge), sharing of equal strings is guaranteed.

Btw, are you confident that the calculation of string_of_scopes itself is not too costly?

Another, more standard approach would be to just memoize the function in a mutable map. If I understand correctly, this should give the same sharing-outputs benefits (as long as we are not sharing the same non-constant result among different strings, which I don't think we are?), and it avoids recomputing the function completely.

For a sequential build of world.opt, I see an increase of about 10 seconds,
the baseline being 4 minutes.

@xclerc which version is giving this increase of 10 seconds compared to what? Are you comparing your PR to trunk, or Alain or my suggestion to your PR?

Looks like there is a real need to reshare those strings, but no agreement on how to do it. Could @xclerc , @alainfrisch and @gasche have a constructive discussion leading to an implementation we can actually merge? Or should we just wait for this PR to fall into oblivion like so many others?

gasche commented Sep 9, 2020

The current implementation looks mergeable to me, although I would prefer to see a comment to explain why the code is doing what it is doing. I proposed a memoization approach that I think is more standard and may be more efficient -- with the current approach the function is recomputed each time and then the result is hash-consed.

  • When the compiler is applied to several source files, most of the global state in the compiler is reinitialized between each file. Here, this is not done, thus causing a memory leak. This could become problematic when/if compiler-libs is used e.g. in a "long-running" driver (I don't know, but perhaps Merlin could be impacted, for instance). My suggestion to use a weak table for the hash-consing would avoid the risk. Alternatively, one could free the table explicitly between units.

  • @gasche remarks about memoizing is relevant, even if string_of_scopes is not injective. It should avoid most of the problem, and brings some possibly observable speedup.

  • Yet another would be to attach to change the definition of scopes so that each cell precomputes the result of string_of_scopes (lazily, if not always needed?). This would avoid all need for explicit memoization/hash-consin, and be potentially a bit more efficient. This should be straightforward, since the type is used almost has an abstract one (except for direct construction of Sc_module_definition in translmod) outside the module. One should probably turn scopes into a proper abstract type.

but we are definitely interested in having this (*) pull request merged.

Certainly, this is a regression that we want to fix.

alainfrisch commented Sep 10, 2020

If you prefer to have this fixed quickly with a minimal patch, I think defining:

module WeakString = Weak.Make(struct include String let hash = Hashtbl.hash end)
let memo_str = WeakString.merge (WeakString.create 128)

and applying memo_str to the result of the function achieves the result without the risk of a memory leak. But #9896 is not very big either, and making the type abstract looks better anyway.

There is another alternative here: rather than a global, possibly-Weak memoisation table, we need only share the strings during Bytegen, when the bytecode is being generated.

string_of_scopes and friends are only called during Bytegen (in bytecode builds), and the result is immediately serialised. So, to achieve sharing, we can cache strings in a standard hashtable, which is cleared at the end of Bytegen.compile_implementation. There's a prototype here: stedolan@1845adb (I can make a PR if this looks like a good idea)
