I've downloaded this to flambda-weak-prerequisite after some thought. I think what happened previously was that we had performance problems in CSE, which we attributed to quadratic behaviour when killing loads, but Pierre then wrote a patch that kills loads in O(1) time. So in fact that probably means this patch is now only to help optimization rather than to fix performance problems at compile time. (We should double-check that story with @chambart when he's back.) That said, I would still like to merge it if possible. |

The first patch changes false to Pointer, which seems wrong, and the second patch just copies the kind, is the end-result what is expected? There commit messages are not very verbose...

I double-checked this and think it is correct (using [is_ptr]). The various things in bytecomp/ that generate Psetfield (... Pgetglobal ...) all use Initialization, which is expected, since these are set-once module field initializations.
Originally, it said "false" to avoid the write barrier, I think. The same thing will happen now because it will say Initialization.

The method of compilation for modules in Flambda (see #262 for some background) means that initializing stores for toplevel values not known to be constant are not directly associated with [Pgetglobal], unlike in the existing compiler. This means that there is no way for the backend passes to distinguish these stores as initializing, which is important to avoid passes such as CSE causing excessive compilation time.
This patch does two things:
