See previous discussion in #312 and in mantis ticket 6681.

This time, the patch is smaller!

@gasche Do you have an idea for a decent test other than "let's just dump and diff the parsetree" ?

What's wrong with dumping the parsetree? You can add the tests to tests/parsing which already does exactly that.

(The coverage of generic extensions and attributes is quite low in the testsuite, only compiler-understood stuff is tested. Feel free to add a bit more cases than just signatures in your tests.)

I pushed two tests. I don't have tests for the shortcut syntaxes yet. I will add them in a following PR.

This needs to be refilled to not overflow 80 columns.

@alainfrisch , @diml , are you okay with the change as proposed? If yes, should we merge in 4.03 or merge in trunk after the release branch?

As opposed to the previous PR, the changes are not risky at all, so I see no reason to delay merge (if it's accepted, of course).

Playing the devil's advocate: this syntax prevents any the use of sig... in structures such as the one proposed in #217 (and already in place in LexiFi's version, which means we would get a conflict if this is accepted). [EDIT: we recognize sig...end only at the top of compilation units, not in arbitrary structures, so there would be no conflict.]

I know this issue has already been bike-sheded to death, but I thought I would mention one suggestion that I haven't seen yet and which I believe doesn't create grammar conflicts: we could have [@foo: ... ] accept both types and sequences of signature items. I don't think these two syntactic categories overlap since all signature items start with a keyword. This would have a certain symmetry with ordinary attributes which accept expressions and structure items (I know that technically an expression is a structure item but that is probably not how users think of it).

@lpw25 Thanks, this is an interesting proposal. It puts a constraint on the future evolution of the syntax for signature items and type expressions. What do others think about it?

ghost commented Dec 7, 2015

Personally I think the constraint is fine. It seems to me that breaking it would already be annoying for users.

@gasche, I'm okay with the proposed changes, or with the [@foo: ...] syntax. In any case I think we should merge it for 4.03; It's simple, doesn't break anything and there is no simple workaround to bypass the lack of signature payloads.

I won't merge it myself before there is some sort of consensus on the syntax, which doesn't seem to be the case right now. If you all can agree before the feature freeze, I'm fine with merging.

I implemented Leo's version, it's equally trivial. Either the current or Leo's version suit me.

@alainfrisch As you said in your edit, I don't think there is a conflict. Since the addition is very local (only inside payload), we should be able to solve most conflicts anyway.

As for your second point: Currently, all structure/signature_item constructs start with a keyword. The only exception is Pstr_eval, and it's arguably a special case (it's mostly there for the toplevel ...). I don't think we can expect to break that property in any new syntaxes, especially in signatures.

Note that, if we decide to merge signatures and structures, as proposed in #312, Leo's proposal still doesn't trigger any conflict, so our future options remain quite open. :)

I'm ok with [@foo: sig_items]. Can you finish updating the PR to this syntax (comments, printer, Changelog), and also update the manual?
