pnpm 11 turned this on by default — when an uncoded build script is encountered, pnpm prompts interactively to choose what to build. In CircleCI the React 18 / Material UI 6 jobs go through `pnpm dlx @mui/internal-code-infra`, which installs in a temp directory and never matches our workspace `allowBuilds` map; the prompt hangs the install until the 10-minute timeout kills it. Setting this to `false` restores pnpm 10's silent-skip behaviour while preserving the explicit allow/deny entries above. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.7 (1M context) <[email protected]>

The `code-infra/install-deps` orb shells out to `pnpm dlx @mui/internal-code-infra@canary set-version-overrides …` when given any non-`@stable` package override. Under pnpm 11's new default `strictDepBuilds: true`, that temp-directory install encounters build-script packages with no matching `allowBuilds` entry and switches to the new interactive picker — which CircleCI's shell does not detect as non-TTY, so the prompt hangs the job until the 10-minute idle timeout fires. Setting `strictDepBuilds: false` in `pnpm-workspace.yaml` does not help because `pnpm dlx` runs in a temp dir that does not inherit workspace settings. Call the orb with empty overrides instead and apply the actual overrides afterwards via the workspace-installed `code-infra` binary (`pnpm exec`). It's already in there. The allowBuilds map above was extracted from the [ERR_PNPM_IGNORED_BUILDS] output of a clean pnpm 11 install: @swc/core, @vvago/vale, esbuild, nx, sharp, unrs-resolver cover the workspace's own build-script transitive deps, and the three false entries (@mui/x-telemetry, core-js, msw) keep them ignored the same way pnpm 10's ignoredBuiltDependencies did. With strict mode on by default in v11, that map is exhaustive for the workspace install, which is why I could drop strictDepBuilds: false outright rather than add new packages.
The thing that was actually triggering the interactive prompt was a separate path: the orb's code-infra/install-deps shells out to pnpm dlx @mui/internal-code-infra@canary set-version-overrides ... for the React 18 / Material UI 6 cross-version jobs. pnpm dlx runs its install in a /tmp/<hash>/ directory that has no pnpm-workspace.yaml, so our allowBuilds never applies there. Pnpm hits the temp install's transitive build scripts, switches to the new "Choose which packages to build" picker, and CircleCI's shell doesn't get classified as non-TTY, so the job sits at the prompt until the 10-minute idle timeout fires. I tried strictDepBuilds: false in this file first for exactly the reason you're asking about, and it did nothing for that hang since workspace settings don't reach into dlx temp dirs.
The actual prerequisite for dropping it was therefore moving the override-application off pnpm dlx entirely. The change in .circleci/config.yml now calls the orb with empty package-overrides (so it just runs pnpm install in the workspace), then applies the overrides via pnpm exec code-infra set-version-overrides --pkg ... against the workspace-installed @mui/internal-code-infra. Both runs read our allowBuilds, so the existing entries are sufficient and strict mode can stay on.
To your follow-up about reverting to the orb's overrides path once the code-infra side is fixed: I don't think we'd need strictDepBuilds: false back here either way, because the dlx hang lives inside a temp dir that our workspace yaml can't reach. The fix on the code-infra side will have to live in the temp install itself, most likely one of:
- the orb passing
--strict-dep-builds=false(or--allow-build) topnpm dlx, @mui/internal-code-infrashipping its ownallowBuildsmap applied inside the dlx invocation,- or the orb dropping
pnpm dlxin favour ofpnpm execagainst the workspace-installed package.
In all three of those, mui-x's pnpm-workspace.yaml stays out of it, so this list shouldn't need to grow when we re-adopt the orb's overrides path.
mui-public's `code-infra/install-deps` now passes `--config.strict-dep-builds=false` to the `pnpm dlx @mui/internal-code-infra` call it uses to apply package version overrides (mui/mui-public#1491). Under pnpm 11 the dlx temp install previously hung on the new interactive build-approval prompt because it could not see this repo's `pnpm-workspace.yaml`/`allowBuilds`; with the orb fix in place, the prompt is skipped and the cross-version install proceeds. Drop the local install-deps workaround that bypassed `pnpm dlx` and applied the overrides via `pnpm exec code-infra` after a plain `pnpm install`. Set `NODE_OPTIONS: --max-old-space-size=3584` at the job level. 3584 (not the container's full 4096MB) matches the value the proptypes/docs:api steps in this same job already use: it leaves headroom for young-gen, native, and OS memory so the process gets a clean V8 abort if it ever exceeds the cap, instead of a kernel OOM-kill. dedupe's live working set is ~1GB locally, so 3584 is ample. The test_static job started failing on pnpm dedupe --check (run inside code-infra/check-static-changes) after the pnpm 11 bump, with FATAL ERROR: Reached heap limit Allocation failed - JavaScript heap out of memory while parsing JSON in the dedupe walk. pnpm 11's dedupe uses noticeably more memory than pnpm 10's on a workspace this size.
Worth flagging that this is not a container OOM. It is V8's old-space soft limit, which is picked per-process at startup from total RAM (~2GB on the medium.gen2 4GB box), so the process aborts itself (exit 134) while the container still has free memory. The fix is therefore a Node flag, not a CI or resource-class setting.
Setting NODE_OPTIONS: --max-old-space-size=3584 at the job level lifts the cap above what dedupe needs (its live working set is ~1GB locally). I used 3584 rather than the container's full 4096MB deliberately: capping old-space at the full physical RAM lets the kernel OOM-kill the process before V8's clean abort can fire, so you lose the diagnosable error. 3584 leaves headroom for young-gen, native, and OS memory, and matches the value the proptypes and docs:api steps in this same job already use.

Verifying in CI whether the latest v11 changes the `pnpm dlx` cold-store build-script behavior that hangs the cross-version (React 18 / MUI 6) install on the interactive "Choose which packages to build" picker. The orb's `--config.strict-dep-builds=false` downgrades the hard error to a warning but, on 11.1.0-11.1.2, does not stop pnpm from entering the picker when it has to build sharp/unrs-resolver in dlx's isolated temp store. The orb's `package-overrides` path runs `pnpm dlx @mui/internal-code-infra@canary set-version-overrides` in an isolated /tmp dir that cannot read this repo's `pnpm-workspace.yaml`. On a cold CI store pnpm has to build sharp/unrs-resolver there, `allowBuilds` does not apply, and it drops into pnpm 11's interactive "Choose which packages to build" picker and hangs until the 10-minute idle timeout. The orb's `--config.strict-dep-builds=false` only turns the hard error into a warning; it does not suppress the picker (verified failing in CI on 11.5.0 and locally on 11.1.0/11.1.2/11.5.0 with a cold store under a PTY). Call the orb with empty `package-overrides` (plain `pnpm install` in the workspace, which honours `allowBuilds`), then apply the React/Material overrides via the workspace-installed `code-infra`. With the in-workspace override path, `set-version-overrides` runs `pnpm dedupe` at the end, which on pnpm 11 blows Node's default ~2GB old-space heap on this lockfile and aborts with "Reached heap limit Allocation failed". This is the same dedupe memory regression already worked around in test_static; the React 18 / MUI 6 cross-version jobs hit it via the override step. Give that step `--max-old-space-size=4096`. Point the code-infra orb at mui/mui-public#1508 (b1161537), which adds `< /dev/null` to the `pnpm dlx set-version-overrides` call so the cold-store build-script picker can't open and hang. Revert the local in-workspace bypass back to the orb's stock `package-overrides` path to validate the orb fix end to end. Note: b1161537 carries only the stdin fix, not a heap bump, so the override `pnpm dedupe` may still OOM at Node's default ~2GB heap (it can no longer be scoped to the install step here once the bypass is gone).
