Current behavior
Modifying the vlan or the parent of a physical uplink that was previously configured with a VLAN ID causes the parent interface to be attached to the OVS switch “incusovnX” instead of the created VLAN interface.
Details :
When the VLAN is modified, the old VLAN interface is deleted and a new one is created.
However, during the reconfiguration process of the “incusovnX” switch, incus first attempts to remove the parent interface (which is not actually attached to the switch — the old VLAN interface was), and then attaches the parent interface to the switch instead of the new VLAN interface.
In this scenario, the impact is limited: since the old VLAN interface no longer exists, the configuration simply fails to work properly, but no major network issue occurs.
In a cluster environment and using rest API (this behavior seems limited to rest API), however, when the parent interface is redefined with the same value across members, the VLAN interface is not deleted (because it’s identical, same vlan, same parent).
As a result, Incus still tries to remove and then reattach the parent interface — which can lead to a catastrophic Layer 2 loop between the VLAN interface and its parent interface.
