Issue description

Some middleware have been deprecated in v1 and later removed in v2, but there's currently no deprecation message warning users about the change. This could be displayed upon adding a deprecated middleware to a connection stack.
Given the verbosity of these deprecation messages, it would be better to make them mutable.
